I'm about to form a Norse kingdom in Ireland. I plan on sitting here while time passes until later and then transfer to EU4. What will the difference be for my Ideas if I form Ireland versus forming a custom kingdom and then drifting Ireland duchies into it. I really like Ulster duchy flag and wouldn't mind a kingdom based off that land. Will I be given Ireland ideas if I'm Ireland, and generic ideas if I'm a custom kingdom? Will there be any other differences?

Ireland or Otherland?

Yeah. You get generic "National ideas" if you export a custom kingdom. But i'm not sure if you will actually get irish ideas if you are a norse King of ireland

I've converted a few games over time. A lot of ideas are based off cultures rather than tags, so if you have say an English-controlled kingdom of Ireland, you'll have English ideas. Norse doesn't have anything special and I believe actual Irish ideas stem from Irish culture, so you'd probably end up with Generic. The mappings would also be doubly messed up, since being Norse-cultured Ireland will be renamed to its localized form, "Irland".

Regardless if you have some patience, you can modify the converted files and just give yourself any ideas you want. It's actually not terribly hard to do, but it can be tedious since you have flip through many files until you stumble upon your nation. If you want a guide, I learned to mod in my own ideas by using this off of Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/paradoxpla...o_you_change_national_ideas_after_converting/

On a side note, whatever you do try and keep your Council laws at "Not Empowered" if you have Conclave otherwise you'll probably end up with multiple vassals with some liberty desire. If you don't have Conclave, then shoot for higher levels of crown authority to ensure you have no vassals to deal with. Also, when you go onto to converting try and do it when there's not a ton of rebellions going on because they tend to stall the converter.

Didn't think "Irland" would have made a difference. I can probably go the modding route but was hoping I wouldn't have to since this is the sort of thing that might happen. Norse taking Ireland.

You'd be surprised actually. Norway and Sweden didn't have their ideas when Paradox decided to give them unique localized names for quite awhile, and anything else that uses localized names or is dynastically named still get Generic Ideas unless there's a culture overriding the Generic ones.

Edit: I just remembered that I had a Norwegian Irland game that I had converted but never used. Loaded it up and I had Norwegian ideas, but my Irish-cultured vassal had Irish so Irish ideas are indeed tied to culture not tag. If you wanted to, you could start Norse and then take the decision to become Norwegian/Swedish/Danish in order to get their ideas. If memory serves, if you're in the British Isles and Norse you still qualify to become Norwegian though you do lose out on raiding in CK2, but if you feel like doing a colonizing game Norwegian ideas and Ireland's location could prove to be a good combination.

If I remain Norse, what would I get? Or does that not exist because it's not linked to a specific country?

Norse culture means nothing unfortunately, which is why I was suggesting you become one of the other North Germanic cultures earlier. The religion will also only convert as Germanic if you reform as far as I know. If you want to double check the mappings though, look at the nation_table.csv in common/eu4_converter.

Norman never really took off, but exists in a couple provinces soon to die off. Maybe I'll grab than and have a Norman Ireland. Any idea what ideas I'd get then? Are there Norman Ideas?
My current new ruler is a Varangian with an Orthodox wife. I've been holding on to the Germanic faith but I can't spread it anymore into Ireland and the revolts are beating me up. Maybe it's time to go Orthodox and really change up this island.

Should be Generic as far as I know with Norse. Norman I honestly can't remember anymore, but I want to say its English though it could be French ideas. Probably a quick way to test would be to just convert a save on the William the Conqueror bookmark.
