Chapter 1 - To the Rescue

Ireland:

30, May 1453

From the onset, I could tell my adopted land was destined to be forever short on funds. Luckily, we were about to secure the services of a reputable "Complete chances" Advisor.

Just by buying his services, the coffer was pretty much empty. I hate the thought of borrowing on the future. But if a loan of 200 ducats was not secured early, this adventure would be over quickly, or drag on.

With the extra money I was able to use two Merchants (that would result in one getting to market). I didn't forget the army. I purchased some infantry for 7.90.

The next step was to gain some allies. Two, Connaught and Ulster came knocking on the door. That's was enough for now.

Toward the end of the month the English had troops in Meath. We could not allow this to be for long.

------------------------------------

October 1453

Preparation for war:
• We have a new king, (28, Oct. 1453)

• The King is a man to fear (shock 3)

• The ground trembles with the mere mention of his name.

• He could not have picked a better time to appear upon the stage.

• Leinster is tittering on the brink of bankruptcy.

• He is a man of action

• He sent me to buy the services of another Mercenary infantry unit.

• The new troops barely assembled on our land, before going to war.

• The King, himself, would lead the army of 3000 (2K were mercenaries).

• I sent a warning to Munster – telling them “Not to start any trouble").

Arriving in Meath:
• The 1000 English support troops for the fort's defenders were gone.

• The troops had boarded transports and set sail for parts unknown.
(Good riddance. May their entire flotilla sink with them aboard...)

When we reached the now English fort:
• We wasted little time in surrounding the so-called fort.

• That night we spent drawing up plans for the siege.

• An officer inquired "What would we would do if the English returned?"

• The King's Captain of the guard, Sean Patrick O'Rourke exploded, “Let the English come…we’ll be ready for them.

Several months later:
• No English reinforcements in sight.

• No foreign intervention to relieve the fort.

(It helped that Hamburg, Austria and Brittany were our allies)

• Our brothers, Connaught and Ulster never bothered to show up.

• As the siege continued, the defenders became weakened by lack of food,
sleep and water.

• Their numbers began to dwindled due to desertions and sickness.

• One morning, a cry rang out, “There’s a breach in the walls!”

• It was a small breach…but, large enough for a small band of us to slip through.

• Sean Patrick and I lead the charge up into the fort.

• The gates were soon opened.

• The defenders gave only a halfhearted attempt to stop us.

• With the gates open, our army quickly swarmed over the defenders.

• Almost immediately the defenders began to surrender.

• Victory was Leinster’s and Ireland's.

The Matter of Annexation:
• Many diplomatic attempts failed when asking the English to cede Meath.

• On 29, October 1454, the English King finally ceded Meath to Leinster.

• Meath was free once more, annexed by Leinster.

• Sadly, our king was wounded during the assault on the fort.

• Tragically, he died on 28 Oct. 1454 (1 day before the annexation)

• His reign lasted exactly one year to the day of his coronation.

A new king’s coronation at a place of old:
• The new king’s coronation took place on the Hill of Tara.

• The Hill of Tara is where the stone “Lia Fail” (stone of destiny) is found still standing
upright. Pronounced "Lee-a Fall”.

• In legend, all the kings of Ireland were crowned on the stone till 500ad

As the legend goes, Lia Fail (the stone) supposedly shouted out the rightful king’s name as he placed his foot upon it.

Well, the very moment our new king placed his foot upon the stone, Lia Fail shouted his name and the voice echoed across the landscape. If you don’t believe me…well, it doesn’t matter whether you believe me or not…that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

The Celtic site of Newgrange is also back in our hands.

• Newgrange with its white quartz façade is a Megalithic Passage Tomb.

• It’s believed to have been built around 3200 BC.

• The site is arguably older than many of the pyramids of Egypt.

Back to Leinster:

• Even with Leinster having 3 Trade tech, money is running low.

• It’s time to throw everything we have into Merchants.

• I threw the Treasury slider all the way over to the right.

• I cringed over the thought of my actions on how inflation would rise.

17, December 1454
• Hamburg requested our aid in a little misunderstanding that led to war.

• We agreed to lend a hand.

• We would lead the fight. (We had more men and a new general, General Sean Patrick O'Rourke.)

• Hamburg was surprised to see only 1000 men step upon their shores.

• But, in the end Hamburg won.

• As to the name of the country we fought, I don’t truly recall its name
(not that history will ever make mention of it).

• Once, the fort’s defenses fell, the defenses swarmed over and the day
had been won, our forces returned home. We had repaid a debt in
answering a call to arms and now we were free of such a charge.

• The people of Leinster and Meath didn’t rejoice in our land army’s
prestige when they arrived back in our land; they were just happy to
see our forces return home to protect their little bit of Ireland.

June 1456
• Inflation is running wild.

• Nat’l Trade Policy is adopted. +10% Trade Eff.

• Merchants are in places everywhere to make money. 34.84 in
Vlaanderen (86%)

16 July 1456
• Finally we are in the black in monthly balance at .8 (84 in the till)

• By December we are gaining 41.86 from Vlaanderen trading alone.

2 October 1457
• Revolt in Meath is easily taken care of by Sean Patrick O'Rourke's army.

May 1458
• The Bank extended our loan at a hefty increase in interest. But, who am I to
quibble. If I can’t make the payment next time the game’s pretty much
over.

May 1463
• Finally, we are able to repay the loan, and still have enough funds for
one or two merchants (but little else).

May 1473
• Inflation is at 10%, overall balance is at only +0.4 This could it be due
to that pirate ship sitting off our shores.

• Recap – Gov 1, Prod 1, Trade 3, Navy 0, Land 1, Stab. 3) (Costs-
Treasury 2.7, Inflation 10%, Military 1.7-for only three armies.) –
Trading eff. 42%

June 1473
• My first war ship is completed and immediately was pressed into
action to give chase after the Jolly Roger. The coast is now free of
the Pirate.

January 1482
• Built my first building – a Workshop in Meath. It was the first time there
was enough money in the coffer to construct a building.

Looks nice so far, I myself had an AAR going as Munster - it's difficult playing in Ireland, but if you can unite the 5 provinces and gain footholds in Europ,e you're doing well. If you're allied with Hamburg, try to conquer one of their one-province neighbours, hopefully they'll lend a hand and you'll have a nice coastal German province.

Hi King Richard the XI.

I'm actually falling behind in the posting. The date is now is 1706. Inflation is killing me and for some reason for about 25 years I wasn't allowed to trade (something about The Papal States). I guess they didn't like my embargo on a bunch of nations. The Papal States were taking over all markets.

Get this...boy, did I ever take a wrong turn...somehow I have an inflation of 93.1 (I thought you'd get a big kick out of that). Ireland is a nation, but I'm treading water. I've had wars with the French, the English, Scotland and a few other countries. I took over two provinces of Brittany and wiped them out.

I don't know how far the game will allow me to go...I'm just not giving up...I've gone too far. Beside how else will I learn not to take a right turn when I should have gone to the left.

And, just how can you add photos...I have print screen shots but I haven't been able to lay them down on the AAR?

Here I'm rattling on.

I took a look at My Mini-City? They're neat. I never heard of it before. Is it a game on line?

Ireland Forever - Part 2

Chapter 2 - The Birth of Trade

1483
• Leinster becomes a Merchant Republic.

12 July 1509
Cuba:
• Sent two groups of Colonists to the Caribbean.

• They came ashore at two spots on the island of Cuba.

• One at Havana (at the East end), and the second group landed at
Guantanamo (to the West end).

• Thankfully, both settlements took hold on the first attempt. For some
reason, initially most likely due to navigation we weren’t able to land at
Moron in the center of the island.

• Initially, I wanted to settle Trinidad, but decided against it as I thought
it best to try to group my new holdings. Also, there were too many
natives in Trinidad and they were angry natives.

• After the first two settlements took hold on Cuba, we sent a third
group of Colonists to Moron in the center of the island, but failed. A
short while later, the French settled Moron.

• I vowed that one day, Moron will be Ireland’s

10, July 1510
• Disturbing News
Natives are gathering just outside our small town of Guantanamo

• I ordered for the populace of 300 to stand and fight the
natives.

• The town soon had 500 souls, as people who lived outside the
town limits moved into the town. Side note: There’s 200 people in
Havana.

1, July 1511
• After pretty much forsaking all techs except Trade, (Placing funds into
Trade alone) I have achieved Trade Tech 9.

1517
• Finally, sent Colonists to Trinidad (it eventually failed) - never tried again.

• We've driven the English out of Ireland for good, but we're nearly broke.

• Connaught and Ulster got their province back.

• Trade is booming in nine different markets.

9 February 1518
• “What…I didn’t even know we had someone running for Papal Controller.
Yet, there it was…okay, but just what does a Papal Controller do?

For the next few years
• Merchants were sent everywhere.

• Money was flying in

• First three national ideas were National Trade Policy, National Bank
and Viceroys.

Ireland Forever- Part 3

Chapter 3 - Trade and Colonization go hand in hand - and The Betrayal

1538
• The Trade slide bar was blacked out (temporarily, nothing else can be
researched for Trade).

• And, for some reason all of our efforts to send new Merchants to any market have
been blocked. The Merchant icon is grayed out. (no photo - drats!)

Note: Many of the photos which were added to this AAR were included after most of the report had been completed. Sadly, many of the photos I would have liked to have included for some reason do not exist due to poor planning or forgetting to save a photo before shutting down the computer. I'm not able to save a photo while playing. So, I must stop playing every time I want to save a photo.

• I must confess I have many enemies, due to my embargo madness (I have placed
embargo on anyone that posed a threat to my profits in hopes of cornering the
markets.)

• But, I wonder if the Papal had something with it. In many of the markets they've
virtually taken over.

1557
• Settled Jamaica. One month later the settlement was wiped out by
natives.

1558
The trade tech is still blacked out:

• Market Trade has been virtually wiped out.

• We're now able to send a merchant to Havana.

• It's been twenty years since we were able/allowed to get a merchant into a market.

1559
• Jamaica was resettled. – two thousand troops soon arrive from Havana
to support colonists on the island and proceed to wipe out the 1200
native warriors due to their constant attacks.

1560
• Choco settled

• Issued an embargo on England (okay, there are times I’ll use it again).

1562
Ulster rises to the occasion:
• While I was off settling the Caribbean, Scotland attacked Connaught
and took it over.

• Ulster rose up, declaring war on Scotland.

• They drove the Scots out of Connaught and eventually claimed the
throne.

• Their King now is called the defender of Ireland.

• The question is, if Ulster was so wonderful why didn't she and her king come
to Connaught's aid prior to the Scot's taking her over.

• As for us not coming to Connaught's aid that's a issue that needs to be discussed
at a later date, if at all?

Ireland Forever - Part 6

Chapter 6 -The Trouble with Spies

23 June 1607

Spies are not the problem - The Kings that send them are!

• We could take it no more...something had to be done about Ulster.

• Their spies were racing through our countryside as if they had the
right of passage.

• In less than a year, we had lost an army resulting in a small revolt, and
experienced another revolt in Mealt due to his spies.

• All along we had our suspicions on who was behind the dirty work.

• But, we needed proof to expose the attacker. To do that we needed
to capture a spy.

• Providence shown down upon us as we eventually did catch us a spy.

• The spy talked after a little persuading...he died, but we still had the
proof...a signed confession ... of course some might argue that the
man was under duress when he confessed, but we didn't care we had
the proof ...

War with Ulster

That very afternoon, we decided that it was time that Ulster had to go and declared war on Ulster.
• Seeing we had the goods and an outstanding warning already on them
we suffered little on image and stability if anything at all.

• First stop Connaught (their province).

• All of Ireland took up the fight and joined the battle at Connaught.

When Munster's troops mustered on the Connaught's battlefield, no one was quite certain which side they would take (after all, they were an ally to both Ulster and us).

• Gazing at the Munster's armies, I recognized their king immediately.

• He was seated on a gallant steed, flanked by his men. Poised like some
statue on a slight slope, he appeared unyielding.

• His stern gaze was fixed as he stared out to Ulster's and our troops
forming battle lines in the near distance from him.

• Looking at him, I sort of felt he was trying to figure out who stood the
better chance of winning. But, I couldn't have misjudged the man more
unfairly.

• His troops, 2000 strong, soon swarmed over the defenders of Ulster.

• Not long afterward, I heard his painful exclaim from atop of that hill
that echoed across the battlefield, "WHAT KIND OF NIGHTMARE IS
THIS ... HAVE WE ALL GONE MAD!"

• I sadly watched the good king of Munster drop his head as he turned his horse
from the field and slowly began to return to his camp.

Ireland Forever - Part 7

Chapter 7 - The War is not over until it's over -

The War with Ulster Raged on:
• Shortly after the battle at Connaught, the Munster's king returned to his
land along with his troops.

• Munster's King decided he would never again fight Irishmen invades
Brittany (allies of Ulster and us)

• Fighting in Ireland continued to swing back and forth between all the provinces.

• Connaught's Fort falls.

• Ulster’s remaining forces hurried into the fort at their capital city.

• The fort and capital of Ulster falls.

• King of Ulster renounces his crown, allowing Leinster to annex both Connaught
and Ulster. The war is over.

• The king of Munster fought, ultimately losing all his men in battle in an ill-advised attack on Brittany.

AFTERMATH
At the close of the war on Irish soil, I gave thought on our so-called victory over Ulster and what the King of Munster exclaimed as the battle in Connaught raged.

Judging the balance sheet:
• Leinster got rid of the king of Ulster and won two new provinces in the process.

• Ireland lost two kings - the captured king of Munster, as well as our king who also died due to wounds taken in battle.

• Lastly, shortly after the close of the war our general died of war wounds.
In focusing on these points it gives me cause to wonder ... was our war truly justified?
Irishman fighting Irishman ... in our eyes when brother fights brother, only our enemies wins
that one.

The Caribbean ... Or, the Emerald Isle
With the close of the war with Ulster, I began to wonder concentrate on what to do next.
• We still were at war with Brittany and Sardina, even though neither poses much of
threat these days to Ireland or anyone for that matter.

• The building up of our provinces had waned.

• Colonization had virtually stopped.

• The Caribbean and South America were in dire straits with the ever-expanding nation of
Aragon, pinning us to the coast and militarily threatening the safety of our provinces there.

I decided to proceed cautiously, choosing to spread our resources evenly across our realm.
As for Colonization:
• We, I had many enemies.

• To safe guard these new colonies, I choose a part of the world that was so isolated. In 1610 a colony was started in Cape.

• In 1612 Little Karoo was settled.

• Troops were eventually sent there.

Ireland forever - Part 8

Chapter 8 - The Awakening

My decision to act did not come in the light of day, but through nightmarish visions. I was being tormented each night by horrible glimpses of Ireland's future...I envisioned all the Irish provinces, Ireland itself, disappear, vanishing into thin air as if soon to be erased from memory and from history itself.

Finishing Touches on the War with Ulster

One morning I awoke to the realization that we must put an end to the war with Brittany and Sardina. But, this proved not to be an easy task to accomplish peacefully.
• Ulster's King was gone and the province joined to Leinster.

• Brittany believed it had a claim on both Munster and Connaught.

• Brittany wouldn't even listen to any peace talks.

• As for Sardina, the puny island nation, well they thought they were bigger than they were.

• I was already furious after receiving the word of how our diplomat was treated by the court of Brittany, when the diplomat from Sardina delivered his kings' demands for a white peace.

The King of Sardina demanded, get this:
• That we give up the province of Connaught

• That we pay them 50 ducats

• I was barely able to restrain myself from tossing the Sardina's diplomat out of the castle's third floor window.

• But, before I knew it Maynard (a great bear of a man) stepped forward and
did the dirty deed for me...he must have read my mind.

• The way the Sardina's diplomat official flew out that window and fell, I almost felt the man believed he could fly (his arms flailing as he fell).

• He made quite a splash when he hit the moat...the man couldn't swim a lick...he promptly sank beneath the surface of the water...

• I guess...Sardina will have to send another diplomat.

• As for the diplomat's decent, he dropped directly past the Lady in Waiting's window.

• His sudden appearance and quick disappearance in and past the window aroused some curiosity in the lady and her maid.

• The Lady in waiting and her maid came to the window and stared down at the water below, before staring up at Maynard and I as we stared out our window.

• "Wave to the nice ladies," I told Maynard, and of course he complied and waved to them.

• Thinking that an explanation was in order, I explained to the Lady in Waiting below that, "The man had to leave in a hurry."

Maynard O'Rourke:
As we stepped back from the window, I wanted to say something to Maynard ... but,
what?

Maynard:
• He young and loyal through and through.

• Tall and powerfully built

• He was appointed by the king as my personal bodyguard. No, that's not true. I took him on as a favor of an old friend, Sean Patrick O'Rourke II.

• On his death bed, the dear man asked, "Take care of my Maynard. He is the child of my old age. He'd be lost if no one befriended him. He's strong and silent...and, he'll protect your back at all times..."

• "Rest assured my good friend...

• With that Sean Patrick O'Rourke fell asleep.

• Strong and silent wasn't the correct description of Maynard. Being slow of speech and mind, he was actually quite afraid that if he spoke he would be laughed at and ridiculed. I never mistreated him, because I understood. He became my friend.

• Shortly after he had thrown the diplomat out the window, I could tell he was fearful of what I thought of him. Like a father to his son, I smiled and said the only thing that was appropriate for the moment. "I suppose we're still at war with Sardina...huh?"

• He nodded yes.

• "Well," I said, "We're going to have to have a long talk you and I...to come up with some sort of agreement on decorum when dealing with foreign diplomats.

• He smiled and nodded yes and so did I.

Ireland Forever - Part 9

Chapter 9 - Take it to the Enemy:
I had no intention of attacking Sardina, seeing that we killed their diplomat and all ... still, it was only an accident ... right? As for Brittany, they would feel the full brunt of our anger...Ireland’s honor was at stake.

The War of Brittany:
The preparation:
• I ordered four transports to immediately set sail for Meath from the Caribbean.

• Preparation were being made to recruit 5 armies (3 infantry, 1 artillery, 1 cavalry)

• To disguise our kingdom's need for recruitment, the word was we were planning on colonizing the world and needed troops to protect our colonies.

• Target date was 12 March of the 1614.

• Target date was pushed back one month to finish refitting our transports

• Initial wave would include all but one infantry army. They would be held in
reserve, to land after the first armies had begun to engage the enemy.

Taking it the enemy.
• Leading our Flotilla was our two warships (Carrack and Caravel and an admiral) which would sink Brittany's warship in Quiberon Bay.

• We took Brittany's land forces completely by surprise in Morhiban.

• They had two infantry armies and were easily dispatched by our combined force.

• What troops that weren't routed, bolted for the hills and disappeared. This nation is no longer a lion.

• Reinforcements arrived in Morhiban.

• The siege of Morhiban ended

• Onward to Vende and victory

• The fort was all that stood in our way of taking over Brittany.

• Fort fell after six months of siege and a final assault.

• The king of Brittany relinquished his throne in 1615. All of Brittany had been annexed (what was left of it).

• The war over - with no loss of stability (as we were all ready at war with
Brittany)

• In annexing Brittany, the war with Sardina was also over. I would have liked to asked for 50 ducats from them, but seeing what happened to their diplomat that’s an issue better left alone.

I've had no problem capturing them and copying them to my desk top. The problem is, I don't know how to copy them to the AAR, or even bringing them to the site.

What I read was there's suppose to be something called the Album of images, located in User Control Panel, but it's not there.

I would love to put some screens in, but I can't figure how to put them on the AAR.
Go to a website such as ImageShack or Photobucket, upload your images and then use the Insert Image button to put them in your post:

Thank you for your help. I really wanted to put some clip shots on the AAR. Seeing that I've already finished the game, all that's needed is for me to is to be able to decypher my cryptic notes. Reviewing the notes I've already discovered a point that was omitted originally.

If I were to be get the photos on the site, do they show up immediately?

On how to upload pics and put them on the site... I’m using a Texas shot for a Vicki AAR I’m planning.

First you go into program files, find EU3 and there’s a folder there for “screenshots.” Turn it into a .jpg by right clicking, putting it in paint (cropping it if you like) and save it as .jpg wherever you’ll remember. For the purposes of this, I labeled my texas shot as jpg. (I also created a folder when I first started writing AARs called "jpg" so I'd know where I put them.)

Next, find a site. I believe you said you already did this. Personally I use tiny pic because whenever I use photobucket, it mixes them up but if you only use numbers for your pics you should be fine with photobucket.

First, hit the browse button and the little window you see on the left will pop up.

2. Type in your file name or find it in the box. When its there, click open and jpg will appear in the "File" slot on the website.

3. If you want to resize (you may have to do this for larger pics) hit the resize button and there’ll be a drop down. For most cases, default is fine.

4. Hit "upload now."

The one you want is the one that’s circled. On other sites it’ll have the slot as well. You carry that to the EU3 website and post it where you like.

And to answer one of your last questions, the pics will show up right away.
