I just notice that the AAR went over 10,000 views today, and I want to thank you the reader for 15 pages of fun! Without you, I'd just be a voice shouting in a veritable abyss. Many thanks!

Impressive army, and earning its spurs quickly! Hopefully you can wipe out the evil Austro-Hungarians!

Thank you! Yes, the Austrians have been acting very badly as of late, so it's high time that someone stopped them... :D

Gott spart den kaiser!

Good luck against Austria, though it appears it will be a tough war from your last update. And with an Irish Army like that, the Austrians will just have to taste the wrath off a cold hearted Irish bayonet charge!

Keep up the great work! Always fun to read.

Yeah, the war doesn't go as rosy as I would have liked... Yes! Fear the mighty Irish bayonets! :D (That is, if they haven't consumed copious amounts of liquor first...)

Chapter Twenty Nine
Redmond's Third Term, Part Two, 1903-1904

Right after the magnificent Battle of Ljubljana ended , on February 22, 1903, the great Charles Gavan Duffy stood before parliament and gave a rousing speech of praise for the Entente. When he was in the middle of his speech, he suddenly stopped and suddenly collapsed. MPs converged but Duffy pushed them back, his final words were, "Let me die here, on the spot that Doheny and Mitchel did..." And, with that, the last MP to serve with PM Doheny died on the floors of Parliament. Charles Gavan Duffy was 86.

When the news reached the country, the cities and towns shut down for weeks. Only the bars, which daily filled with people holding their own wakes for the great man, had any signs of economic activity. Duffy's public funeral in Dublin drew over 7,000,000 citizens out of a population of 30,000,000. His mass was attended by King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, Tsar Alexander II of Russia, King Leopold II of Belgium, King Wilhelm II of Prussia, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Sultan Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Empire, and King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Needless to say, Duffy was beloved by people and ruler alike.

Even the soliders in the trenches took the news hard, and their morale was only picked back up when they destroyed an encircled Austrian division in Idrisko that April.

190.jpg

A little to the south, a great British force was beginning to smash through the lines at Postojna, and the Irish ran to help the British.

191.jpg

By late July even though numbers lay with the British, the entrenched Austrians failed to give way and the battle was lost, at a cost of 45,000 Irish lives.

192.jpg

By October, though, the Russians had broken through the Austrian lines and were rapidly advancing into Ruthenia and Transylvania, and were beginning to siege Kosice and Bratislava in Slovakia.

193.jpg

By November, Austria was calling Uncle. Even though the Austrian push of 1901, and the allied push of January 1902 had made the war even, the Austrians were on the brink of collapse, and didn't want their Empire to fall into chaos. So, on November 15, 1903, the Treaty of Siena was signed, ending the War of the Entente after two years of fighting. In the treaty, Troppau and Karlsbad were given to Prussia. Parts of East Transylvania and Galicia were given to Russia. The Ottomans took further territory in the Balkans, and all the coast up to Senj. The British took Venice and the Croatian port of Zadar as their prize. While, for all their effort, Ireland was given the city of Trieste.

194.jpg

Irish Italy:

195.jpg

As was tradition, Ireland started their custody of Trieste by building a Liquor factory. As was common to say in the early 1900s, "If you've drunk a drop of wine, thank the French. A drop of anything else, thank the Irish..."

196.jpg

Within a month, the city went from being all Italian and Slovene to having nearly 5% of its population be Irish. Amazing...

197.jpg

Without Duffy to grease the gears, the election of 1904 went very slowly, with minimal campaigning by any party. Thus, no one was suprised when the Whigs won again in 1904 electing PM Redmond to a fourth term as PM of Ireland. It would soon be seen how much a part of the government Duffy was, and that without him, how badly the Irish government was off...

As you state at the end, it will be interesting too see just how much the Irish government, and especially Redford, is at a loss without Duffy. We await the next term of office...

Hmm, wikipedia lists Duffy as being born in 1816, making him 86 at the time of his death. You're not trying to belittle the man, are you? :p
Just how poorly has the Italian peninsula fared as a result of the lack of unification?
And when are the Irish going to acquire some good wine country? ;)

A victory for Ireland, although Trieste is a historically troublesome city. The poor Austrians seemed to hold up well until those Russians came screaming across the border. And 45,000 in one battle? Yikes! Even from a population of 30 million, that's a lot. Compare and contrast:

On the morning of July 1, 1916, 100,000 British troops came out of their trenches and advanced in broad daylight toward the German lines. The soldiers staggered under the weight of 66 pounds of gear as they walked across a crater-filled field known as "No Man's Land" in long orderly lines.

The slow, massive advance was an outdated military tactic that was no match for the new weapons of war. The British soldiers were easy target for the Germans who mowed them down with machine gun fire. More than 20,000 British soldiers lost their lives that day, the worst in British military history.

The glory of Ireland is rather soaked in blood. And Duffy's death, neat. Who will emerge from the shadow of his greatness? The old man kicking it has got to help more than hurt liberals in the short term.

Yup, Redmond is sure up a creek without Duffy... :p

My Mistake! It'll be fixed immediately!
Italy is essentailly devastated, with outside powers carving her up. The countryside is burnt rubble, and the only hope for stability is a war of unification, which is highly unlikely...
The Irish have no need for sissy wine while they drink Guinness and Heiniken!!!

Trieste will be rapidly invaded by Irish, so stability shouldn't be a problem...
Yes, they did suprisingly admirably, but when those Russians (who were fresh off a colonial war in China) hit hard, the Austrians just couldn't hold on much longer...

Well, keep in mind the battle lasted from Late May to Late July, or about 60 days. That translates into 750 casualties per day. However, the manpower gap will /I] take months to refill... :(
I'm suprised you're not thrown into convulsions by Duffy's death!
As to who will emerge, that is yet to be seen. i know, but you guys won't! :D
Actually, it hurts the Whigs more... You'll see what I mean in the next update.
