Regardless of what medieval music really was, most people think that medieval times were hard and depressing.

Yes, "most people" who have not spent much time studying it.

While this music would be fine for a fantasy setting, which is usually not very medieval at all despite its pretensions, I think it is wholly inappropriate both for the period and for the nature of the game. As has been said many times before, CK is not about conquest and taking over the world, but instead about gaining prestige and piety. In CK players will not be truly sovereign independant entities even if they do not have any immediate feudal lords. They will be bound by networks of marriages, claims, and obligations into the frabric of medieval society.

This music communicates one idea: bombast. A better score, would in my opinion communicate mysticism and spirituality. Medieval composers in my study were not arrogant people, and considered their works to be God's work, not their own. Most of the music seems simple because it was written, in my study, for people without strong musical backgrounds. If you want to conjure images of the crusaders, why not use more drums and brass? Why not experiment with modes other than Ionian(Major) and Aeolian(Minor), which weren't even accepted until later in the period. Does anyone know when the organ was created? Organ music might be very appropriate if mixed with choirs.

I see the player listening to this and then playing the game disoriented.

Give me madrigals! And Sackbutts (the best instrument name of all time)! And, and, give me Guillaume de Machaut:

Rose, liz, printemps, verdure,
Fleur, baume et tres douce odour,
Bele, passés en douçour,

Et tous les biens de Nature,
Avez dont je vous aour.
Rose, liz, printemps, verdure,
Fleur, baume et tres douce oudour.

Et quant toute creature
Seurmonte vostre valour,
Bien puis dire et par honnour:
Rose, liz, printemps, verdure,
Fleur, baume et tres douce oudour,
Bele, passés en douçour.

Interesting discussions about the music for CK. Download the short CK intro and judge how we catch the spirit of the time period...

Upon relistening to it, I have softened my judgement... oh I still dislike it, but since the purpose of intro music seemingly is to propel you into the gaming world, it seems tolerable.

I still don't believe it fits either period or game concept, but it fits in with a notion of the intro... so in that sense I don't think the intro music is probably the best from which to judge the game score. A collage of the game score would have been more appropriate. I understand that really isn't practical, but still for the purpose of discussion it would have been more fulfilling.

My opinion of the music for this game as far as I have heard it, is that it's a poor attempt to invoke the period. I will most likely be listening to some Anonymous 4 CDs instead. Yes it maybe only modern interpretations of medieval music, but it's very good interpretations. Anyhow the truth is that technically any modern reproduction of period music can ONLY be interpretation.

If you enjoy Anonymous 4, you might try Marcel Peres' Ensemble Organum instead. The amount of musicological research which goes into every performance of EO is mindboggling...and it is historically correct, since it is a men's choir (and religious music of the time was sung by male choirs, mostly composed of either monks or deacons).

EO's performance of Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame is particularly moving.

Well, I personally will load up my own music anyway. Jimi Hendrix, Boston, ELO, you know, the GOOD STUFF :p

I wan't able to listen to the song (link didn't work) but if it is so bad, just load up whatever YOU like, that's the whole point of having the ability to do that. Lighten up everyone, it's not the end of the world :)

You mean Hildegard and her nuns were actually all men!?!?!?!

Women were not allowed to sing in the liturgy from a ban in 4th century, but I don't think it was enforced, in all times and places, with much vigor.

Heh. No, communities of nuns were under different rules for liturgical celebration, of course. :) Touche'.

I can't listen to the mp3 right now (at work, no speakers).

But I for one won't be upset if the music isn't authentic medeival music. Such music, while interesting to listen to on occasion, isn't frankly very good. I was playing EU2 last night for the first time in at least a year, and was reminded about how much I didn't really care for the 15th century tunes as compared to the later centuries...
