I'm afraid I must agree, the very first third or so reminded me of the intro to some cartoon. The latter half sounded more historical, but still not medival, pirates did actually come to mind...

EDIT: Oh! Oh! I just thought of what the piece sounded like: The intro to Heroes of Might and Magic (or some similar Epic Fantasy Game/Movie)

I'm not crazy about it... It gives me visions of pirats and battles on the high seas or a adventure action pic... dosn't give me a midevielfeal at all... sorry! :(
I concur... :(
I do not mind, really. Maybe it might make you more excited. However, that better not be all the music is like.

With that said it's a good piece of game music, just not very medival. :)

I have to agree with the rest of the pirate crew: It sounds pretty much like 16th to 18th century. Some Bach, some Beethoven (with all the strings in the middle) ...

I'd envision medieval music to be rather "basic" (not primitive, just plain simple) and less bombastic. let's say woodwinds instead of brass and plucking instruments instead of string instruments.

If you want to create a militaristic feeling, what about using lots of drums with some (few) brass instruments ... a trumpet and a trombone should do the magic

sorry, but I really really dislike it! being a professional musician (and an 'historically-informed' one at that) I would so much rather have period music!! eu2 has it, vicky has it (well sort of—not really sure what the mozart requiem clip is doing in vicky... perhaps on account of the mendelsohn revival at the beginning of the 19th jh? but i digress)...

why not ck!?

cheers
hc

edit: not sure 'bout how royalties/legal-stuff etc work, but something like Jordi Savall/Monserrat Figueras 's 'El Cant de la Sibila' (check on Amazon for clips) would be much more the thing!

Bah...it isn't that good, but then after the first time I always skip the intro anyways.

I would definitely say it does NOT capture the spirit of the time period, but I won't be hearing it much anyways...

Is all the game music going to be like this, or will it actually be period music? If it's all like this...

I actually think Falalalalalal etc. had a slightly more medival feel than this piece. Which just goes to show that having the right "feeling" isn't everything!

Ok, I agree, the music doesn't sound medieval, but why in hell would we want medieval music? Medieval music is not for crowds because it's very hard to comprehend without a solid musical education...

Ehm... not true? There is little to no music that can not be enjoyed by the casual observer. I am largely against people who say that some music can only be enjoyed by people who know what's going on... it goes against the very principle of music, and medieval music is not much different. It was supposed to be pleasing to a set number of people (monks, entertainment, etc.) and none of those were musically educated...

actually, no...early medieval music had very strict boundries. There was religious music and there was the music of common people. They did not cross any lines and kept to their selves the main ingredients.

pre-harmony music (let's say pre-bach) is very, very hard to enjoy. This is why you rarely find it in music concertos.

Could have been more mideval use mor harpsicords they rock

Harpsichords aren't medieval, they're baroque.

*waits for the inevitable "Well, if they're baroque, then fix them!" joke. :D *
