Interview with the Ruler

Welcome to my first AAR! There are so many good AARs out there that one might find it difficult to create something original. With that in mind I tried to find a style which at least I haven't seen before, but which seems very fitting for Crusader Kings. The idea is, as the thread title suggests, that I'll be writing the AAR in character. This means I'll pretend to be the character I'm currently playing and write as if that character is sharing his/her life story with you. This doesn't mean I have to be super serious all the time and act just like a medieval ruler would (in fact, most of the times I probably won't), but rather allow some humour and distance while keeping it in first person. I don't know if something like this has been done before, but regardless I think it could be fun.

As for my actual play style, it naturally will be heavy role-playing. For every character I play, I will look at their traits and skills and determine what sort of person they are, what desires they may have and what methods they'd be willing to use to achieve their goals. Their relationship with other characters and their current emotional state based on what happens around them will also influence the decisions I take. For instance, if I play an ambitious, deceitful character who hates his brother who stands before him in line to inherit, I'll probably plot to kill the brother. If however I'm playing a content, kind character who admires his brother above all I will happily stand aside to let him rightfully inherit the title. I may also change desires abruptly from character to character, meaning one character may set things up for a great conquest, then die and be replaced by a character with no interest at all in those ideas.

I will keep very strictly to this rule, even if it causes me to make obviously disadvantageous decisions (if I ever end up playing an imbecile character, expect disaster). The only time I'll break this rule is if my line is about to die out, in which case I'll take whatever measures necessary to prevent it even if that goes against my current character's nature. Also, in situations when certain decisions neither goes against their nature nor is something they'd be particularly inclined to do, I will take the liberty to go with whatever makes sense from a gameplay-perspective. My character's personality will hopefully also affect the style of my writing (I'm saying "hopefully" since I'm not sure I'll be able to do it very well, but we'll see).

Aside from that, here are some additional rules I'll abide:
# No cheats.
# No reloading saves (except in the case of major bugs).
# No save-file editing (except, once again, in the case of bugs or similar).
# I will not use the ruler designer; I'll use whatever character I get.

As for starting character, I've decided to go for the Count of Essex at the "William the Conqueror"-scenario. A count is probably the most interesting level to start on and the reason I start in England is simply because I've never played any game anywhere hear there. I'm starting with the second scenario just so I won't have to deal with the three-way war for the english throne first thing I do.

I'm playing with the Sword of Islam and Legacy of Rome DLCs, patch 1.08. I'm not using any mods.

Furthermore, whenever I'm writing with cursive light yellow text in the actual AAR, it means I'm writing OUT OF CHARACTER. I'll use this to clarify things that may be unclear, motivate my decisions when it might seem like I'm not acting properly according to my role-playing rules, and for making humorous remarks.

That should be all. I'll bring you the first post of the actual AAR shortly. I hope you will enjoy it!

Prepare to have your county taken in the invasion by 1068.
Invasion by whom of the what now? Are you sure you haven't got the scenarios mixed up? "William the Conqueror" is the second scenario, taking place just after William had won the war and become King of England.

Oooh, I'm sorry then :)
I was (mistakenly) referring to the very first scenario, where William typically takes most of southern England by occupation in the invasion.

I thought so. That's alright, although you got me scared for a while there :)

Alright, there have been some delays while I figured out how to post images, but now it's time to get this started. From now on, anything in my posts written after a title, such as "Part One: The Financially Aware Count", will be considered in character unless it's written in light yellow cursive. In smaller posts which has no title, like the one above this one, I will not write in character even if the text isn't light yellow cursive.

Part One: The Financially Aware Count

Greetings, Lords and Ladies of Paradox Plaza! It is my understanding that you enjoy stories of mighty rulers and grand conquests. Allow me then to share my own story, one who starts humbly enough but will surely satisfy your hunger for greatness given time. I hope. When I pass away, my heir shall take up the task where I left off and so shall his heir after him. So it shall continue until the complete story of our glorious dynasty has been told.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Geoffrey de Mandeville, Count of Essex and Spymaster of England. My county and council position was recently granted me by King William the Conqueror after his successful invasion of England. I have received schooling in the teachings of God and has been described as a Dutiful Cleric, even though I never excelled in the field. Furthermore I like to boast I am a temperate man who don't believe gold should be easily spent on excessities, something which unfortunately leads people to think I'm greedy. Massing up enormous amounts of gold rather than carelessly spending it on such luxuries as food is just wise stewardship, right? It doesn't make you greedy.
Finally I must admit I'm quite envious by nature. My neighboring Counts and Dukes all sit on wealthy lands they surely couldn't manage as well as I could. But I won't just sit here and see them waste all those precious funds, for I am ambitious and will not stop my quest for gold as long as there is still breath in me. However, conquests are risky and expensive so I'd rather focus on safer means of filling my treasury to begin with.

For those who don't recognize the icons, his traits are: Dutiful Cleric, Greedy, Temperate, Envious and Ambitious. Greedy and Temperate may seem somewhat contradictory at first, but it all depends on what he is temperate about. It certainly isn't gold.

I have a son named William and while I love him as my child, he is still merely one year of age and there is as yet little to say about him. His mother has departed this world which means I should be concerning myself with finding a new wife. I am somewhat reluctant to share my riches with another person, but since marital duties lies heavy upon me I might as well make the best out of the situation.

Technically the child doesn't have a mother, but hey ho I gotta justify his existence somehow, aint no de Mandeville ever was created outta nuthin'.

While scouring the lands in search of marriageable women my eyes fell on the daughter of a welsh Duke, named Hunydd ferch Bleddyn. She's young enough to fulfill her duties as wife and while she's not particularly talented in most aspects, she does have a keen sense for intrigue. This would be valuable to me when rightfully plotting to steal my neighbors valuables, so I intend not only to marry Hunydd but also appoint her my Spymaster. Naturally I will collect Royal Aid Duty to pay for the ceremonies; why pay for something when you don't have to?

On second thought I probably should gone for someone with higher stewardship, but intrigue is actually not entirely unfitting either since my character is envious and would definitely want to plot against those better off than him.

LWBWG.jpg

Now to put my councilors to work. I am most displeased to see that my two vassals, Mayor Clemence de Maldon and Bishop Herbert de Waltham is not paying me as much taxes as they could. As infuriating as it is they are actually paying minimum wages and if I want more I simply have to make myself more likable in their eyes. Therefore my loyal Chancellor and Chaplain shall be sent to improve our relations. My Steward will naturally be working to squeeze out even more taxes from the smallfolk while my Marshal will direct his talents at inventing new ways of warfare to aid my future military campaigns.

I am here subtly ignoring the fact that my Chancellor and Chaplain are the very same Mayor and Bishop they are sent to improve relations with. Dissociative Personality Disorder is a beautiful thing.

Zhu61.jpg

Finally I will send my Spymaster wife to Westmorland to build a spy network. Westmorland is the capital province of Morcar I of Hwicce, the only holder of duchies in England except for the King himself. He has large and rich lands and I have little love for him. My hope is that my wife's spy network may reveal some interesting information that I can use to my advantage, perhaps a way to claim his riches for my own. His military strength is far too great to challenge head on but scheming is my specialty.

And let's all pretend my wife is not a balding middle-aged man.

JILSr.jpg

Even though my Chancellor is working hard to convince Mayor Clemence to pay more taxes, it couldn't hurt to tighten up the laws. Clemence will be displeased, but as his liege I certainly need that money better than him.

That would conclude the start-up phase. As to not make this first post drag on for too long I'll start the actual game in the next one. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it! As this is my first AAR any feedback is much appreciated.

Well, I suppose I should make a post here just in case someone is expecting something more from his. I have now gotten a feel for what level of dedication I'd have to put into this AAR when making it and have realized that together with everything else going on in my life I don't really have the energy for it (yeah I'm kinda lazy like that). So if anyone actually was interested in it I apologize. Have a good day.
