Guys, in game we can warp space and presumably time. I'm not saying that when the game starts designing babies with the genes of both parents should or will be possible, but if an empire pursued that line of technological inquiry it'd probably be discovered fairly quickly.

I suspect the devs won't address this outside of maybe an event or two, which is fine.

But with a few thousands of years in which two species live together peacefully, there will be a point when they accept eachother's existence. And there would be another point, in which they accept eachother as normal. And then, there is not much time left until the first people get in love with members of the other species. And "love" doesn't mean the same as "sexual desire" in this special situation.

And as a direct answer to your comment: Why would a horse feel sexual desire for a donkey? Obviously, because those two species are quite similar not only in what they look like, but also in terms of behavior. They are simply similar. So, why wouldn't that be possible for two similar species, that live peacefully in a society, with civilization and stuff? A neanderthal man would be more likely to love a homo sapiens woman than a female mammoth, right?
With that said, I have an idea for a feature in Stellaris: Could some species, which are somehow genetically related to eachother and not too far away, actually breed? Could two species that were divided a long time ago reunite into one new species?

Of course for horses and donkeys it is possible and so on, my point is that people make some pretty large assumptions when they assume that the aliens encountered would look pleasing to the human eye (the whole "only different foreheads" thing).

I admit my absolute lack of finesse and fair manners here but I'm quite confident that I would hardly find attractive that Fungoid lady (or sir, dunno, they're hermaphrodite anyway) working for years on the desk beside mine even after two Rio Carnivals and some barrels of Stolichnaya vodka.

Have your heard about the concept of sex toys? I mean the Fungoid Lady under the right circumstances can be similarly attractive to an Inflatable Lady. The latter has a measurable market. ;-)

I also said in my pre-previous comment, that this would only be possible for people of the same "type" (Mammalian, reptilian, insectoid, fungoid, fish,...)

With that said, I have an idea for a feature in Stellaris: Could some species, which are somehow genetically related to eachother and not too far away, actually breed? Could two species that were divided a long time ago reunite into one new species?

This is very interesting not just conceptually but mechanically. We already know species can form subspecies, either through deliberate genetic manipulation or as an effect of a few generations of inhabiting radically different conditions. This leads to a few questions:
1) Can POPs of Species A and Subspecies Aa come to inhabit the same planet or colony.
2) If so, can they produce offspring?
3) To which subspecies would such offspring POPs belong (Species A or Subspecies Aa or a random chance of either)?

We know very little about POPs and population growth so far, so questions like 2 and 3 above might be nonsensical depending on how those systems work, so a hypothetical in-game scenario might be more helpful:

I have a planet that contains 2 POPs, one of Species A and one of Subspecies Aa. I hit whatever threshold the systems deems necessary for organic population growth to create a 3rd POP. How is that POP's species determined?

so Commander shepard when he/she sleeps with Tali/Garrus is doing something inhuman? :p

Commander Shepard gets the benefit of dealing with aliens who are basically humans with a few differences, not ones that look completely different, probably has a completely different means of reproduction.

Of the two aliens that she/he can romance ie Garrus and Tali, both have dextro-amino acids; not to mention Turians are an Avian species.

Nothing can stop commander shepard. He is the Captain Kirk of the games.

Human / drell prolonged skin contact cause allergic reactions. (as its possible to romance thane too, a reptile specie)
With turians mordin warns its not really "possible" to have "a good time" like most think. Both species are just too diferent physically. Also humans can get allergic reactions and chafing.
Talli aside from being a dextro-amino acid its still a biped mammal. Here the risk was for tali that could die from the experience if shepard don´t take a stelerilzation process and her a antiseptic. (And she still got sick after it).

Only asari is easy, but they also don´´t have "a good time" like normal, they link their brains to yours to share sensations and take the DNA/RNA information they need. This implies they can only reproduce with races that also have a similar brain pattern. (So no fungoid species and maybe insect races as their brain functions don´t work like most other animals).

but again, we are going too deep in the conversation and little about mechanics or how to make it fun in the game.

Events ideas that could make this possible, fun and immersive :).

I Think that you missed my point, which is that while there are changes they are very much humanoid in their appearance and have some very human personalities.

And I want to have captain kirks in the game, and since the Devs stated star trek is a major influence, I expect some events relating to interspecies romance.

Human / drell prolonged skin contact cause allergic reactions. (as its possible to romance thane too, a reptile specie)

Of course Sex with a drell for a human is also like being on a high since you get mild hallucenations as well :p

First of all both species would need the same type of genetic material. The odds of that are highly unlikely at best (just look at how complex the DNA is, based on 4 distinct nucleotides with a helix structure, a highly complex system of genes, modifiers, on and off-switches etc). So they'd need the same structure, coding for genes, gene types, chromosomes, modifiers etc.
On top of that they'd need a type of genome that is compatible with each other that doesnt bring out warped and twisted monstrosities as babies, where even on earth the possibilities to get babies even between very near related races and types are small.
And last they would need some kind of almost the same type of breeding mechanism and sexuality, aside from the need of both partners to want to have a sexual relation (whatever that means for each race), if you dont want to forcebreed due to experiments.

So no, thanks, no cross breeding for me.
And no, even if I like Mass Effect alot, Asari are no good model for cross breeding in a SciFi game.

May I just remind people, that the Sith species from Star Wars, those guys:

Are the product of humans breeding with the original Sith species. After a civil war in the Jedi Order, only twelve of the Dark Jedi were left alive, who were banished from known space. Those twelve eventually landed on Korriban where they took over the ruling caste and ruled over the Sith, hailed as demi-gods for their mastery of the Force. One of the Twelve, Sorzus Syn (I believe) found a way for the two species to breed, and as such, the twelve Human Dark Jedi eventually died, leaving a different sub-species of Sith that would eventually replace the previous species. This was done thanks to Sith Alchemy, which can alter flesh in minor details used safely. Experiments of Sith Alchemy have been known to result in mindless creatures or horrible mutations...
