I agree, it is an issue... playing on highest speed too, you have to set a lot of things on autopause not to lose control.

But for me, not having the option to make the game autopause on events is much more annoying. I was told somewhere before it is an engine-related "feature" and cannot be modded... Is it really so?
(This means in practice: an event (or more) pops up, the game runs. You try to pause to deal with the event, but an autopause popup opens meanwhile, so you actually unpaused...you begin to hit your spacebar, just to have the same effect a couple of times until you somehow find the rythm and can start to deal with all the windows... we all know this, annoying.)

Is there a reasonable solution to this at all?

Eh... It's a engine related feature, thus no need to mod it in.. Just find message settings. And set the events you want to pause to pause and those you don't to not pause - possibly just disabling them all, then you're back to manual control.

I guess I was not clear enough. I mean "event" events, not those you can change in message settings. Like "Copperheads" in V2 or battle events in HOI3.
(I start every game with setting all messages to pop up and pause, then selecting out those not needed while playing.)

Am I understanding this correctly? The problem is that some users have set events to autopause and then reflexively unpause the game when an autopaused event pops up. Correct?

If so, the obvious solution would be to either not use autopause settings or to train yourself not to hit pause at the wrong time. Seems to make more sense than having "separate pause and resume buttons"

Even so, still leaves the scenario when some event you have on popup (without pause) arrive at the same time. You pause and an event you have on autopause happens to arrive before you pause = you unpause.

And since I'm not the only one to have the problem with autounpausing when leftclicking in a (different?) state I wouldnt mind an explaination for that "feature" (and my feeling was that that was not the only time the game decided to autounpause for me ).

Others have reported it as well. I can't get this to happen, though.

It would be nice if the game actually never automatically unpaused. So that the game will never go on without me knowing.

That is part but not all of the problem - I did mange to train myself to to not press pause when a dialog I had set to auto-pause popped up.
However that assumes that you don't change things later - in different games I find I have slightly different settings for auto-pause.
A bigger problem is when you see something happening and pause the game but at the same time a second even occurs which auto-pauses the game - in this cause you command to pause becomes a resume because there are two reasons to pause.
