Hi,

EuR vae victis.

Started at the start of the timeline as rome, and have done about 25 years (the last 15 as a dictatorship). I have very high tyranny (how do i decrease this because by council sucks because have to get loyal people, and not the best people??????), and high infamy as have had to do lots of wars and give my leader triumphs to keep his popularity up due to the high tyranny!

Anyway, an interesting situation came up. I am allied with Egypt, and they wield considerable power, as they have expanded since the game began by beating carthage in a war when about 4 of us all went at cartheage at the same time. Despite this, catheage is still a superpower.

About 5 years ago (i think) Egypt began a civil war. I presumed this woud be fine and they wud crush the rebels in a short peroid. However, it has dragged on and now Egypt only holds about 5 provinces and the rebels have about 15 provinces. Now, this isnt that big a deal BUT cartheage are allied to the Egypt rebels.

So there is a worry that if the rebels win the civil war, then i could easily getting destroyed by the combined might of Egypt and cartheage. But if Eygpt defeats the rebels in the civil war, then I will hold the balance of power, and pretty much do whatever i want without having to worry bout cartheage.

So basically, should i enter this civil war and try and kill the rebels? A few things i am worried about are:

1, due to tyranny alot of my generals are civil war risks
2, if i enter the civil war i think cartheage MIGHT come in on the rebels side. This would result in a huge war, which would weaken me alot and the strong greeks have big armies on my eastern borders and they hate me for being aggresive and annexing a few of their greek states
3, i am getting a ton of revoults due to tyranny and having expanded quite far (have scattered provences in gaul, iberia, near greece)

But despite these problems, I dont think its an option to let the rebels win the civil war, it will mean the balance of power shifted dramatically away from me.

Is there a way of helping Egypt in the civil war without committing troops? I guess i could send them lots of gifts to help them out financially?

It is also an opportunity to grab some interesting provinces if you fancy that. If you help the ptolemies against the rebels and you conquer some rebel provs, when the civil war ends, each prov goes to the hands of the country occupying it (there is no peace negotiation in civil wars), so you would keep those provs you captured from the rebels for yourself. :D

Besides, military action is an opportunity to hold triumphs, either to increase your dictator's popularity or to increase unloyal generals loyalty. Also use bribes at will!

Tyranny issue will be solved when your current dictator dies I believe, as it should reset when the next ruler ascends.

In terms of the civil war, by all means intervene. Civil wars are the best way to grab territory enmasse as you can declare war against both the rebels and the loyalists and effectively get twice the provinces you would otherwise get. As already mentioned you could get practically everything you hold if the civil war ends.

The tyranny score halved when my original dictator died. It went from 18.x to 9.x.

yeh, same happened when my leader died.

Kinda of annoying there is no other way to reduce tyranny unless anyone knows?

I would of thought it could be reduced by donating to the plebians perhaps? from the state tresury or from the leaders personal wealth

It goes down slowly over time (about 0.1 per year by my observations), and greater gains can be made via some missions.

PS- I love interfering with allies civil wars. Taking their land while maintaining the alliance seems like a no-brainer to me. For some rivals (namely the larger ones, like when you are Pontus next to the Selucid Empire) its the only way to make initial inroads. Over time you can chip away at them pretty well, all while they remain you allies.
