I am searching for an interesting campaign, playthrough or goal for the 867 and 1066 start to keep me playing to the end date. My problem is when I manage to get most of the achievements I lose the interest.
Currently I think about a tribal -> MR game because I still have to do most of these MR-achievements. What realms or characters are good for that?
I already did a WC, created nearly all Empires possible, played and reformed every religion except some heresies. There is not much left I didn't play that's why I am asking for your help.

Well, you have to have a coastal capital to make a merchant republic, which limits your options somewhat. Off the top of my head, Ireland and Pictland/Scotland* are tribal at early start dates and most counties are coastal. Norse Germanic is similar and has good CBs but you have to reform the faith before you can go MR.

* Try playing as Prince Urguist Circinn of Pictland (I forget his location). Landed brother of the existing King of Pictland in the CM start, and he can win a claim revolt pretty readily and then use de jure to take over several small chiefdoms next door. I also believe that Pictland either starts out with ships or can get them quickly.

If you want to do tribal->MR then you'll want to do a 867 start. You've got several options: Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia and the Baltics.

Then I'd say Strathclyde is probably your best bet in 867. Mide and Scotland are also possibilities.

Another one is Sudreyar, a.k.a. the Isles. It's Norse in 867 so you can raid permanently, but it's Catholic so you're not vulnerable to holy wars. The only serious issue is, you're within de jure Scotland so you have to get to prestige-farming fast for a tribal army to beat off conquest.

A Danish republic is on my list of things to try some day. The added hurdle of reforming the Norse religion could keep things challenging. On the other hand, you could get a Catholic holy war against you and convert (presenting a different set of challenges, of course). It could also be a good option for a game to convert to EU4 since Lubeck can be a very powerful trade node and from Norway you can make a run at establishing colonies in Canada/Gulf of St. Lawrence, Eastern America/Chesapeake Bay, and the Caribbean.

Norse republics act really strange when converted to EU4 though.

If you're Fylkir, sometimes you randomly become a theocracy in EU4, so I would make a few exports with a few days between each, to make sure you get a MR start.

I started a Mumu MR so I choose Ireland. The boring part is I managed to become MR fast (30 years) so no actual tribal game. But Christian tribal game with no ship is boring anyway.

Another one is Sudreyar, a.k.a. the Isles.
Maybe i give Sudreyar a try where I will go on raiding rampage till I build up my holdings and later I convert to Catholic (he is germanic on the start) and MR.

A Danish republic is on my list of things to try some day
I was hardly thinking about that one but you always live in fear about holy wars from the Catholics or when I convert to get raided. And a MR is not a power horse

If you want to be a bit silly, I'd suggest starting in Scandinavia and reform the faith. Then prepare invade Scotland and become Scottish culture. To give yourself something to do for Persistent Survivor, let gavelkind split Scotland and whatever kingdom title you have. You'll have the best retinue in the game buffed further by your religion.

I did too much germanic blob games in the last weeks. Maybe I conquer Bretagne and some Mediterranean islands and go MR after it. And for the silly part maybe I go Muslim.
Or I do all of that after I conquer Scotland and let some Muslim states behind me

If you want a challenge and don't mind skipping the tribal part, you could give the Nestorian doge of Socotra a try. You'd be a de jure part of the emirate of Sanaa, so you'd get targeted by both holy and de jure wars, but if you can somehow survive you'd be the only merchant republic with direct access to the silk road.

This is for a 867 start. I'm not sure if the republic of Socotra still exists in later start dates.

Has someone an interesting 1066-1453 campaign or had one of his/her own?

I would probably look at this way- a lot of us probably have personal anecdotes about great campaigns, but my best advice would be:
A) Scroll through your achievements list and/or the Interesting Characters on the CK2 Wiki and make a plan based off of that.
B) Use the Scenario Generator at scenariogenerator.net to get a random start with random goals and rules to try and really challenge yourself.

You also have some classic hard starts such as the Zoroastrians, Socotra, and Abyssinia or old challenges such as the Salian Challenge (as the Count of Pfalz in 867, create the HRE by 1066) and Norse India which may give you some ideas as well.

Norse republics act really strange when converted to EU4 though.

If you're Fylkir, sometimes you randomly become a theocracy in EU4, so I would make a few exports with a few days between each, to make sure you get a MR start.

Thanks for the heads up on that quirk. I'd probably opt for converting to Catholic, anyways, as I find the papal politics/mechanics interesting. It also means that if expansion plans don't pan out, I could join the HRE and get into even more political subterfuge :9.

Another Tribal to MR possibility is Crimea (Theodosia), again a potentially challenging run since I often see the area change hands frequently with all of the nomad hordes passing through.

Another "could be interesting" game I've thought of trying, though doesn't include the tribal aspect the OP mentioned is attempting Antioch as an MR (someone mentioned a silk road MR and this came to mind). Trying to avoid both being subsumed by the ERE or wiped out by Muslims could be a tough challenge.

A) Scroll through your achievements list and/or the Interesting Characters on the CK2 Wiki and make a plan based off of that.
Actually this is how I did it most of the time

B) Use the Scenario Generator at scenariogenerator.net to get a random start with random goals and rules to try and really challenge yourself.

I know that site but I found those 'goals' too ridiculous most of the time. But maybe I give it a try this time.

You also have some classic hard starts such as the Zoroastrians, Socotra, and Abyssinia or old challenges such as the Salian Challenge (as the Count of Pfalz in 867, create the HRE by 1066) and Norse India which may give you some ideas as well.

Zoroastrian check and Abyssinia check.
Salian just long and boring and there are no achievements to get. Scotia and Indian Norse is maybe something.

I don't think they are a republic in vanilla at all.

You're right. My bad. I heard something about a Nestorian MR and looked at Socotra in game, but completely failed to check for correct government type.
