You lot may or may not have seen such threads on the Vanilla CK2 part of the site. Essentially, I would like to compile a list of interesting characters (in our limited amount of bookmarks) along with motivations for the player. While some folks just enjoy the difficulty of tiny counties and unfortunately heretical characters, I know other like to play people who are interesting as a result of their history or what they were known to do in the period. Sadly, we can't call on the entire breadth of European history like Vanilla Kings, but we do have a startling amount of lore for Elder Kings.

Imperials

Colovian

Crowhaven, County of
---Ignas Olo, Count of Crowhaven, 3370: Ignas is descended from the mythic Colovian hero-figure, Bendu Olo, King of Anvil and Admiral of the All Flags Navy who sank the Sload Island Kingdom of Thras in response to the Thrassian Plague. Despite his storied ancestry, Ingas Olo possesses only two baronies, neither of which is Anvil. In fact, it would appear his brother, King Sorex, was killed by the current King of Anvil, Arctur Dralgoner, during the conquest of the city. As such, you start at odds with the King of Anvil (a large neighbor), and your heir is your conniving half-brother who will almost certainly of worse stats than Ignas himself. This character gives you a concrete goal: retake Anvil, and a challenge: fight much larger neighbors. Eventually, you could take control of the Colovian Estates as its next High Admiral?

The Colovian Estates, Kingdom of
---Ilnori Aquilarios, King of the Colovian Estates, 3461: The Aquilarios line briefly occupied the Imperial throne (according to ESO). Varen Aquilarios defeated the grandson of Durcorach the Black Drake and took the throne with the help of his Five Companions. So, easy goal -- disrupt the Cyrodiilic Empire, take it for yourself, and marry a Tharn.
---Roderic Dor, Count of The Colovian Highlands, 3461: Descended from the Imperial Cyrodiil dynasty of the 2nd Era, Roderic Dor would naturally be indignant at a common Reachman declaring himself Emperor. Help the Colovian Estates take down Durcorach the Black, or declare independence, swear fealty to the Reachman, and destroy him from within (hello, Independence Faction!).
---Hieron Hassildor, Baron of Lipsand, 3370: As you are no doubt aware, in Oblivion the Count of Skingrad is no longer a member of the legendary Larich dynasty, but rather a particularly vampiric Janus Hassildor. Try to birth a Master Mage named Janus, make him a vampire, and take the seat of Skingrad. Then, try to keep your vampirism a secret.

Nibenese

The Heartlands, Kingdom of
---Velanius Umbranox, Baron of Nikel, 3370: You may recognize the last name as the eventual Counts of Anvil in the Third Era. Help your overlords in the Heartlands overcome the Colovian Estates, or declare independence (survive, somehow) and make your way to Anvil. Who says you have to wait for a Septim to put you on the throne?

Cheydinhal, County of
---Abnur Tharn, Count of Cheydinhal, 3370: The Tharns always lusted after the imperial crown. Abnur is a famous (or infamous) mage and necromancer and was a member of the Five Companions of ESO fame and a companion to Mannimarco, the King of Worms. Walk the path of the necromancer, like Abnur, and make your way to overlordship of all of Nibenay, as seen in the later bookmark. Bonus points for becoming a Lich and making friends with Mannimarco.

Mer

Altmer

Balfiera, Principality of
---Ancotar Direnni, Prince of Balfiera, 3370: The Direnni were the last elven rulers in the human lands of Cyrodiil, and once were hegemons of most of High Rock. Return High Rock to its old state as an elven dominion of the Direnni, independent of Alinor.

Unlanded
---Mannimarco, King of Worms, 3461: Unlanded, so you'll need to start the game as the King of Alinor and land him (easy enough when there's a rebellion in 3461). Leave your people in Alinor as soon as possible, setting up shop anywhere in Tamriel (though Iliac Bay may be the most logical, given Elder Scrolls II). Become a Lich, raise armies of the damned, befriend Abnur Tharn (if you feel you -must- recreate ESO), and spread the Cult of Necromancy before Vanus Galerion can find you.

Maormer

Pyrrahn, Kingdom of
---Orgnum, High Fane of Pyrrahn, 3370: Orgnum the God-King is an infamous character in Elder Scrolls lore. An immortal Maormer famous for many raids over the centuries on the southern parts of Tamriel. Unite Pyandonea and use your bottomless coffers to launch raids on the southern coast of Valenwood. Be sure to make slavery legal, and take slaves from the foolish Bosmer and Khajiit. Finally, once you've established yourself on the coasts, invade Alinor and remind them why Orgnum the God-King is feared. Bonus points for enslaving your fellow elves at every opportunity.

Bretons

Reachman

Markarth, Minor Kingdom of
---Rodvar Tankarrth, King of Markarth, 3370: A one-county Kingdom surrounded by stronger neighbors, all of whom are your culture and can launch conquests. And if you manage to survive, you'll be surrounded by even stronger devotees of the Eight Divines who will hate your Old God-loving ass. Remind the Nords why the Reachmen are to be feared by uniting the Reach and launching the Reachman Invasion yourself, from the historic seat of Markarth. Bonus points if you grab Dwemer Artefacts before doing so.

Well, there you have it. Part of my making this list was also in the hopes that someone else might provide me with interesting characters/motivations to play, as I'm looking for something fun and new.

"While the Tharns never had anything exactly to do with Cheydinhal"

Actually, ESO's lore establish that they were the rulers of Cheydinhal for centuries. It has curious implications, one could guess for example that after Jagar Tharn's great betrayal they were cast off Cyrodiil and their throne given, insultingly, to a Dunmer, the Indarys family of Oblivion.

You could add all the families with an bloodline trait. But I have little knowlegde of the ES lore so I don´t know which are important(especially in the case of the Nord dynasties with the Companion bloddline).
Oh and there is this one Akavir count who is an believer of the Eight Divines near Khajiit lands.

I've been trying to confirm any of those Five Hundred Companions bloodline traits, but none of the lore-wikis have anything on them. A lot of the Nord dynasties were just plucked from random NPCs in Skyrim, it looks like.

Ah, ok.
I remeber that the King of Winterhold have a strong claim on the Highkindom of Sykrim.
Maybe there is some lore behind this claim.

There are many facets of Elder Scrolls "lore" and not all of them are accepted by everybody; some people argue ESO should be 100% canon, others argue it should be discarded completely or only used if absolutely necessary while at the same time worshipping the very ground Michael Kirkbride walks upon, and visa versa. Since it's effectively "open source lore", we pick and chose what parts work best (in our opinions) and what parts don't, just as everyone else does. The Companions Bloodline is from the 500 Companions who came with Ysgramor, the people holding them are descendents of one of those 500, but not necessarily holding their name or dynasty name (some of them are iirc, but you'd have to read Michael Kirkbride's stuff on the 500 companions to dig out which ones).

I'm one of those folks who disregards most of ESO and loves Kirkbride. I would love to see what sources you used from Kirkbride on the 500 companions. I don't think you're making things up -- I just don't know where it's sourced, so I didn't include them on my list of Interesting Characters.

In addition, if you have an interesting character you'd like to suggest, try providing detail like Start-Date, their Holding, and what's interesting about them.

As I'm not a big fan of ESO's lore, I don't know much about their accomplishments. I know Aquilarios and Abnur Tharn from my experience in the beta.

If you'd like to write something up for them, I'd incorporate it in the original post.

Is Roderic Dor an actual character in ESO or is he made up? There's also the problem that how come this character, along with members of the Reman Dynasty, aren't dragonborn?

Sorry if this isn't exactly the right place to do it, but I was wondering if there were some more sources to look up for the characters in High Rock besides just Daggerfall and Wayrest? I always liked playing Bretons, but never played Daggerfall and don't really do MMOs, and the wiki lore on these other locations are pretty sparse.

I prefer not to start out as a king (or queen), as it makes the game a little inevitable, although starting out on this mod for the first time, I'm not sure I want to go as far as a single county surrounded by hungry neighbors. I was going to go as something like Camlorn, just because it's someplace I've actually heard of before, but I have no idea who most of these people are, or what tie-ins they have to the lore. (If any.)

(I'm currently going with Farrun based upon the fantastic reasoning of "his family crest looks cool".)

Sadly, I never played Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, but one would assume you could find some info on the wiki pages for it, or on the wiki pages for the MMO. Still waiting on some of you enterprising guys to come up with interesting characters of your own, which I can add to the first post. I am not well-versed in ESO, but I know Emeric Cumberland, King Faharajad, and Korunn Flame-Hair are important.

Well, House Ildene of Farrun (which has the pretty cool crest of a golden portcullus and chains on a maroon field) has an actual chain of ancestors in its history, which is rather unusual.

Beyond that, it's hard to find any real information on any of the cities or characters besides Direnni. Much of what I can gather from the lore, it's basically "In 3E 54, the daughter of the king, named something-or-other married a Septim, and therefore became related to someone doing something actually important." I.E. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Camlorn

Quite amusingly, I did find this page: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Breton_Names

It tells of how the games have put together the names of the pseudo-random characters, which would be quite useful for the mod as a whole, although I'm not quite sure how the game or mods actually create random names.

Looking up the Ildene family in particular, the only character who actually shows up is Nana Ildene, who is a forsworn in Skyrim. This is odd because they are Breton, not Reachmen, even though they are near the Reachmen territories. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Nana_Ildene

The actual Reachman neighbor in Dunkarn, House Sanurach, is apparently from a silver mine and minor quest near Falkreath in Skyrim.

Nearby Jehenna, ruled by house Velain, is from a Breton Nocturnal worshipper. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Francine_Velain

Old Gate is ruled by the Farr family, which apparently comes from Myn Farr, a character who was in the data files, but never actually existed in Morrowind. Incidentally, Old Gate has the same CoA for its county as the Ildene family has as its family CoA, but in different colors.

The nearby Northpoint is ruled by the Maul family, which apparently comes from Andre Maul, of Morrowind, who has a tower and is a savant. Apparently, there's some other Breton characters named Maul in ESO, but there's zero information in their stub pages, so heck if I know who they are...

One of the other potential dynasties to play up there is the Draconis family, which actually comes from the Dark Brotherhood quests in Oblivion, where you had to murder the entire Draconis bloodline.

There's Bracques of Evermor, which apparently comes from a minor quest character and trainer in Morrowind.

Lords of Sharnhelm, the Aethelred family, comes from a sheep farmer that gave the "Bear Season" quest back in Oblivion. (I remember that one - those bears completely MELTED my armor because I was high-level when I took that quest...)

House Motierre of Camlorn is kind of interesting - two Dark Brotherhood quests associated with that name, from Oblivion and Skyrim. The Skyrim Motierre asks you to murder Titus Mede II.

Basically, it seems like the only house in all of this are the houses of Deleyn of Daggerfall, which has some lore related to them (apparently, all ESO-related and in ESO, there is a King Deleyn), house Woodbonre of Wayrest, and naturally, house Direnni of the Direnni Hegemony (although it's just Balfiera, here). Direnni, notably, being Altmer (but impure), and having a special bloodline trait.

More-or-less, it seems like there isn't any good High Rock lore so far as naming families goes, so the mod authors were forced to just pull some names and characters out of their... portal to Coldharbour.

In summation, unless you want to play Direnni or Woodborne, they're all basically the same. (Woodborne being one of the few republics.) It's kind of like Ireland in CKII, where everyone around you has only 1-3 counties, so everyone's sort of equally weak, and it's a big free-for-all. (Meaning: the player will easily dominate unless you up the difficulty spectacularly.) I'd play Direnni if it weren't for the fact that I'm purposefully setting out to play a Breton.
