Who is the most the most interesting and fun character to play in the Byzantine Empire at the start of the game? I don't want to play the Byzantine Emperor at the start of the game.

I have only tried the Doux of Athens but I've found it pretty fun. Haven't made it to emperor, have so far chosen to play as a loyal vassal but I've taken a lot of territory including Sicily, Rome, Alexandria, Antioch. Athens is 3-county, if factions keep the emperor busy there is a lot of chance to take stuff from your neighbors before CA gets too high.
I'm also interested in this question, so far it seems there's the big two, the Doukas and the Komnenos, but other than that I don't know much about the others.
Palaiologos, the last dynasty of the Empire. Start out as Doux of Epirus. The Doux's son Georgios was a confidant and friend of Alexios I.
Diogenes, for Romanos IV Diogenes. Start out as Doux of Anatolia.
Kantakouzenos, one of the most powerful houses in late Empire. Don't know where they start, but it was on the European side IIRC.
Dalassenos, another prominent family. Start out as Doux of Trebizond.
Laskaris, Emperors during the Nicaean exile. Don't remember where they start in 1066.
Angelos, another house to briefly hold the throne. Start out somewhere on the European side IIRC.
Botaneiates, yet another prominent family that once held the crown.
