I was wasting time on imgur and found an interesting map that I think the EU4 forum might be interested in:

It's a map of plots of journey logs during the late EU4 time period. What I found interesting is that Chesapeake Bay is the wealthiest trade node at the time, which is consistent with the game .

That map is pretty interesting. It doesn't look like Venice is an end node, though.

It's only showing ships... most of which are going quite oceanic. You gotta figure the transportation could become much more efficient in friendly home waters, yea? And there would be land transport.

That image is from the ICOADS US Maury dataset, which was a log of ships sailing from the US only, after the Revolution. Most of the data in that set is from the 1830s to 1860s, when the set ends.

There are other interesting ship's logs visualizations from other data sets, such as this group:

Quite interesting map, but it obviously doesn't show the whole picture. Those logs seem to be just from American vessels, nothing more. And of course, those end up in the Chesapeake Bay node area most often.
America did not have any interests in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Black Sea, Eastern Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, Yellow Sea apparently..

edit: that happens, if one opens many threads, reading through them before posting in the last one...
