The long-lasting effects of the murder of Emperor Severus Alexander thirty-three years ago are still felt today, the Legions have neglected the border provinces to fight with one another rather than the invaders crossing into our borders. It was only eight years ago that Emperor Valerian was taken captive by Shapur, the Persian King of Kings. Emperor Valerian's son, Gallienus, ascended the imperial throne soon after, causing mass unrest and discontent across the provinces. The Provinces of Gallica, Hispania, and Britannia rebelled immediately against the reign of Emperor Gallienus and claimed independence as the Gallic Empire. Last year, the Provinces of Syria, Palestine, and Aegyptus in the east declared independence as the Palmyrene Empire after Regent Zenobia murdered her husband, King Odaenathus of Palmyra, and has used her son as a puppet, proclaiming him Emperor of Palmyra.

Now, news has arrived of the murder of Emperor Gallienus, slain by Legate Lucius Marcianus, Prefect Aurelius Heraclianus, and Tribune Marcus Claudius. Tribune Claudius has been proclaimed Emperor Claudius II by the Legions at Mediolanum after the suicide of Prefect Heraclianus and the disappearance of Legate Marcianus. Even as these events play out in the west, in the east Anatolia has fallen to the Regent Zenobia and in the Scythian steppes, the Visigothic King and Ostrogothic King have formed a coalition against the Empire.

It is in these dark times that our story unfolds...

Yea, no worries, lots of records were scorched during the crisis, thus most of our information on the era is from non-contemporary sources.

Emperor Valerian was a staunch pagan and persecutor of Christians, he passed legislation through the senate that forced many Christians to give up their property, and make offerings to Jupiter Optimus or face execution by crucifix. When he left to campaign against the Sassanid Persians in 259, the laws stopped being enforced by the liberal Senate. Finally, in 260, on the death of Valerian and ascension of Gallienus, the legislation was rescinded by the new liberal Emperor and Christians were allowed to live in peace.
