Been wondering in middle of train jams.. could it be possible to add on Train stations a switch of form "This station is for intercity traffic" or "this station only for local trains"?

Many real-life cities have suburban stations only for local trains. And what I have heard, now in the game every train station connected to network spawns new passenger/cargo trains, thereby causing jams.

Of course, this problem can be worked around by building distinct inner-city rail networks, but it's somewhat wasteful.

Same switch could be applied for bus stations and harbors.

I believe this feature was added in the last update.

Yes, it was just added last week. Check or uncheck "Allow Intercity Trains".

Also, putting stations on a "loop siding" as shown above can also help reduce congestion, as trains not stopping at the station will go right by on the main line. Ensure the loop is long enough to reduce blockages at intersections.

Yup, everything like this is helpful, and years playing Transport Tycoon and OTTd have really taught to solve this kind of problems. But tell me, how would you resolve *outbound* train congestion, that is, line of fifteen trains trying to get off the map... on all four rail exits of city?

I honestly don't know. Never had that many. I have had cities of 260k pop, with lots of train traffic, mostly only a little congestion. I don't know if there is something I am doing right that prevents the issue or not.

The current city is the Ferry scenario, and I only have 26k pop.

The last big city I had used no passenger rail at all. Maybe that helps. ;)
I had more than a dozen cargo rail stations, plus two cargo hubs. Lots of cargo trains moving about. Now that I think about it though, I don't think there was any rail access off the map. (It was the Tornado scenario from "Natural Disasters".) Maybe that's the solution, no rail exiting the map, haha.

I have this problem on many of my games. I have so many train stations and cargo stations, and I solved the problems on the map so they can move nicely but when they reach close to the border they just fill up and stop because they have to wait for other trains to go that are outside of the map. So it is annoying.

to avoid this you need to limit yourself to only having one station (of each type) connected to the outside world; what you should do is keep your internal train network separate from the outside world. this is a bit simper with Mass Transit as stations with two or six platforms exist in the game. So one station with two platforms, one platform is reserved for outside traffic and the other is reserved for your internal network, only this station should be connected to the outside world. the more stations that are connected to outside the more external train traffic increases, this is particularly problematic with larger cities. this also causes problems with cargo ports and excess cargo ships

Yes, have had a lot of cargo ships! Would not be as annoying (functionally) as rail though, as they seem to have little problem passing through one another.

Yes, that was actually why I thought reserving for local purposes could be good for harbors and cargo stations as well. Though, the ships really don't get blocked too easily.

Entirely beside point, is there any way to see statistics how much cargo or passengers leaves the city through which way? As the game gives statistics of so many details, this could as well be interesting :)
(Yes, passenger stations and harbors give number of passengers served, but cargo stations do not).
