Quebec does sound interesting though. I rather like the idea of playing as a releasable North American nation.

I sort of figured that the American nations would be out because they're too close to the USA (where The Presidents is still playing out). Wouldn't Quebec specifically be surrounded by the US/UK? The US releasables/minors like Texas, Deseret, and California have a similar problem - though I guess that didn't stop Fry. (I assume the CSA is out. If we had a racism problem in South Africa...)

I am not a big fan of the American nations. Poland or Ukraine sound a lot more interesting.

CSA can be safely ruled out due to the racism issue. As for Quebec, those are some solid points. I dunno how well the nation could survive, as I have never played as them. Mayhaps North America aint the best idea after all.

What about Liberia?

The problem with Poland is that it's perhaps too close to Danubia (as already has been suggested)

There's just a lack of interesting countries to play in VicII I'm afraid. Portugal or some kind of Poland would be my preferences, having a crown would be nice for once.

I agree, a monarchy would be nice.

In Poland we can resurrect the unique form of government of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: a sort of crowned republic with an elected King, a powerful Sejm (parliament) and very influental nobility. Many interesting peculiarities that could cause many interesting problems, like the liberum veto, right of every Sejm deputy to veto the decision of the King.

Portugal and Two Sicilies are very cool as well: many interesting traditions, many opporunities to unify/ colonize etc.

What about Belgium? It's a newly independent country in 1836, and it has the added bonus of the rivalry between Wallonians and Flemish.

That's a good idea. I hadn't considered Belgium, yet it has a lot going for it. A Belgian game gives us much leeway, in terms of direction and gameplay. Thinking about it, I would have to put down Belgium as my favourite choice.

As far as countries go, Belgium is most certainly the best option I've heard. Gameplay-wise (and it's not in Eastern Europe), but also not in the least because it will get us to kick Dutch ass

I think belgium ks more interesting then poland as game play options are more open, and it doesnt have the problem of the ahistorical cores poland has. Also ahistorical things like that really bug me.

I'll admit I'm not too keen on playing European countries like Belgium or Poland that have much diversity. Personally I'm still for an African Nation or Australia as its history would essentially be written by immigrants.

Well Australia has a pretty strong racist history, so there is the racial issue surrounding playing as them. (saying this as a proud Australian myself )

I still think Catalonia is an excellent choice. Even if it is small (and it is not that small) it is:

-Far away from Eastern Europe, unlike Poland
-A constitutional monarchy; which is better for both the GM and as a change of pace
-Well-situated for conquest of North Africa; giving us an excellent base for colonisation later
-Untroubled by powers which may want to eat it (except maybe France? I'm unsure)
-Mighty and glorious

I really feel that colonisation is something that should be taken into consideration; as it is such a huge part of what makes HOD what it is. Although Poland colonising is not unheard of; it would certainly be thrice as difficult.

Both have established governments and Belgium already has a constitution.

Spain's could be uprooted after the First Carlist War. Belgium's could similarly change once the war of independence over and they can establish themselves as a bona fide state.

Eh, if we're dropping South Africa, Portugal or Belgium are the best suggestions imho.
