I just picked up AoD a few days ago after many, many years of playing HOI2. I've been playing a '36 Germany campaign and have a question about intelligence missions. I'm just fooling around trying to learn how everything works so I did smear campaign against France even though the odds weren't good. Now it keeps continuing without end. Every so often I get a message that my mission failed and one of my spies dies. After several months I have almost no spies in France and can't figure out how to turn the mission off. What do I need to do?

Yes, if you sleep spies they'll abandon there mission and will less likely be caught and executed.

Generally I like the new spy system much better than it was in Doomsday. I too discovered the fact that spies attempting some mission just greatly reduces your spies and you need to sleep them to cancel it. I only use spies to get intel. I think the whole missions thing needs a big revamp. If you loose spies with every failed attempt one needs to consider the cost of that, the loss of intel for that time, and the fact that a mission like "delay tech team" likely (if it succeeds) will delay a tech that doesn't really matter. It's not like I can mission my guys to only attempt delaying nuclear research.

AS USA I try to global manipulate Germany and the USSR, hoping the increase in belligerence will give me another "Gearing up for war event". Though I wonder if I am not better of getting right into the war as soon as possible.

Does anybody know for sure if the number of spies impacts diplomatic missions too? It seems to. What I have been trying to do as the US, is get spies into South America. I use trade to raise the relations, and influence nations to raise their intervention. The goal is to get them into the Allies. Their militaries may be insignificant, but there are 60VPs there that could be important in a close game.

Could someone also explain the numbers for the Foreign Minister?

Examples:
Coup Nation -667 (-1000)
Influence Nation -67 (-100)
Offer Alliance -50 (-100)
Influence nation -133 (-100)

How do I read these numbers?
Whats a good stat and whats bad??

There is nothing in the HoI2 or AoD wiki about this that I could find...

I've never understood those stats myself either. In DD/Arm I tended to use intelligence as something to do while waiting for the war. I've never had any success with coup nation and some others. Mostly steal blueprints but usually get ones I won't use anyhow! I'm really enjoying the automated stuff in AoD but now pre war I don't have much to do because I'm not micromanaging my sliders.

I'm pretty sure these number are cost changes. For example: a coup nation normally would cost 1000, with this minister the cost is now 667. With this foreign minister, the cost of influence nation actually goes up from 100 to 133(Using the 4th entry in the example).

EDIT: So you want a foreign minister who is going to save you money on the diplomatic missions you use most.

I agree those look like cost figures. In my experience though they did not apply (I could be mistaken) with the cost for doing influence being neither of the figures stated. The cost to influence is the main concern for me and I obtain it by simply stopping game to test all ministers as to their cost to influence nation, then going back to pick the cheapest one. Not a nice solution but one than works for single player game.

The HOG can change the costs. The cost is also influenced by the types of government. It costs more for a market liberal to deal with a paternal autocrat than it does another market liberal. You also want to look at a foreign minister to see if he is better at dealing with similar or other governments.
