Installing Ricky

Unbeknowst to me, but beknowst to y'all, for some reason the Ricky download at Gamersgate is fully patched for itself but does not come with 1.04 already included. So the proper installation is Vanilla + 1.04 + Ricky.

All fine and good, but even after I uninstall and reinstall vanilla Vicky, 1.04 refuses to install because somewhere on my computer it's being told that the game is still at patch 2.whatever.

Having already installed Ricky, removed Ricky, and reinstalled vanilla Vicky, what do I need to do so that 1.04 will allow itself to be installed?

You don't need 1.4 if you download the hotfixes.

Thanks! Uninstall and even the regedit hadn't worked - it was probably the installshield file. I'll see how it goes.

Nope. Uninstalled. Deleted. Regedited. Deleted install stuff. Still thinks that 1.00 is newer than 1.04.

Is Afrique right about the hotfixes? Do I use them on Vicky or Ricky? and is there a post with all of them around?

Eh... What're the problems I'll run into if I just play Vicky + Rev without 1.04? or can anyone figure out what's still wrong that 1.04 still thinks the game is a newer version?

I found this text file saved on my hard drive. You might review it and see if there are any steps here you might have missed. I think I had to use it once a year or five back.

This info applies to Windows 9x or ME. It hasn't been verified with Windows 2000 or Windows XP but it should be the same. Just be careful and remember to do a backup before editing the registry (Registry menu, Export registry file, name it backup_ddmmyy.reg, check the box "ALL" in Export range. If you delete something by accident, all you have to do is to double-click on the file to restore you registry to its previous state.

There appears to be a lot of Brothers, Sisters, Friends etc going around uninstalling HOI incorrectly!
If this is done then it is difficult to reinstall the game as "bits" are left everywhere and the Game Installation is fooled into thinking that the game is still installed.
If this has happened to you then try this:-

You have to manually delete a key in your registry. You do that by starting regedit (Start => Run => regedit => Enter) and navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Paradox Entertainment" and delete the Victoria key. It looks like a folder in regedit.(If you have applied more than one Patch then there might be more than one key).
If you are nervous about editing the Registry then get someone to do it for you. However if you only delete the above key(s) no harm will be done.

EDIT: Note: If you have the Strategy First version, you may have to substitute "Strategy First" for "Paradox Entertainment" both in the above registry path and below in the path to the files.

Also delete the directory C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Victoria.
EDIT: or if you did not use the default directory, then what ever directory you installed the game to.

Note: This part has proven to be unnecessary with the latest patches, but I left it there, just in case.
You also have to delete some installation files.

InstallShield creates a directory where it keeps all the information on installed software. On my machine it is 'C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information'

'InstallShield Installation Information' is marked as hidden so to be able to find it you have to change folder options on you PC to show hidden files. Search for files containing 'Victoria' in this directory and you will find a file called 'setup.ini' with the following content:

On my PC this resides in: 'C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{A6F1BDF7-53A7-4AF6-84B9-0C51C722BC91}'. I'm not sure if the last directory name will be the same on all machines but I think so. Delete that directory and you will be able to make a clean install.

I believe that I have heard that you can find alternative sites for downloading hotfixes if you look around a bit.

The only problem you'll have without 1.4, IIRC, is that the 1861 scenario is broken. It tries to load a French state file without an accent circonflexe, but the accent was only removed in 1.4 so the file it's looking for doesn't exist and the scenario crashes. The hotfixes fix this and several other small things, but I think the game is certainly playable without them.

I just downloaded the hotfix from OH's sig a week ago and it worked fine.

Well, for HOI, but it didn't work, so there must be something else still to delete. Anyway, if it's just that 1861 file (it does crash - I'd tried that scenario) and nothing else major, maybe just fix it myself...

Sounds like the registration key may still be in your system for Victoria in spite of the delete.

did you try the steps that RELee posted to remove the registration key a few posts above. that's the only thing i can think is still there if you have removed your copy of Victoria from your HD (do a manual check as well, since esp if you play with mods, doing auto-deinstall sometimes will leave behind modded files from ViP or other mods that the deinstaller will not remove.)

Follow-up: Problem was that Victoria was in the registry under Strategy First and Victoria: Revolutions for some reason made its own registry entry and chose to put that under Paradox Entertainment/Interactive.

If an appropriate mod could make a note to the original HOI post, that might save some North American players some time next time.
