I'm thinking of playing the Byzantine Empire with some roleplaying rules, such as only conquering historical Roman Empire territory plus wherever Christianity has spread. But, given the bitter history of Byzantium/Islam, I'm thinking another goal could be to somehow wipe out Islam (eventually, after centuries). At the very least, I'm thinking it would make sense to install my own dynasty members as kings of neighboring territory (i.e. the classic "friendly buffer states" that have been created by everyone from Hadrian to Stalin) and get the bonus to dynasty prestige.
Ideally, I think it would be funny and cool if I could somehow revive Zoroastrianism to replace Islam, since there are plenty of ZA provinces in the 768 start, although the near-extinction of ZA characters makes me question how that could be done. I'm wondering, if I just installed a Greek/Orthodox or Italian/Catholic dynasty member as a King or whatever of a bunch of ZA provinces, would he or some successor inevitably switch to ZA and the local culture, or would they ultimately convert the provinces to their religion (if they aren't overthrown first)?
