What if the tech groups were to be replaced by innovation bars for each country?

First, Innovation Bars in my view are a scale of how much you need to pay in monarch points to increase your tech. The bar goes from a negative 100% to a positive 100%.

For example, at positive 100% means your citizens are completely ready to adopt the next tech level. However, if the innovation bar is at negative 100%, your people would take serious convincing(in terms of monarch points) to advance to the next tech level.

Something like this would be an improvement, although I would question whether the player should even "buy" tech at all. For all the aspects of the game that are completely random (and some of them probably shouldn't be), spontaneous technology could make sense that way.

With the way tech works and the boons each provide, removing the player's ability to actively pursue tech would only be frustrating. I'm wholly against randomness.

I originally thought before release it was going to be something along the lines of what CK2 uses, ie: tech gradually progresses but you can spend points to jump to the next level early. Was a little disappointed when discovering it wasn't.

I prefer to invest in researches, like in EU3. The system in EU4 is bullsh*t.
clearly a fan of the one province minors

Tech in EU3 was terrible it made no sense at all, Eu4 is far superior, I mean wtf was up with that inflation system.

In a time period where currancy was literally its weight in gold how on earth could you create inflation by not spending your income on research, just blows my mind.

but anyway, tech is a very difficult thing to portray in a game, I like the EU4 system but it could probably do with some tweaking. I am firmly apposed to static tech groups, their concept really annoys me, I'd much rather have things that effect your teching (speed, units, and buildings), that you can change over time rather than a static penality to tech until you pass through some rediculously brutal decision driven events.

You should definately have the option of easing into westernisation( A word I also abhor). There were two types of westernisation in history, slow & sudden, Eastern Europe being the slow & Japan being the sudden.

I would love to get back to how religion and culture would spread in EU3.
As it is now i just convert the province that can be converted the fastest.

Culture spread is just about the ONLY mechanism that was better in EU3.

While EU3 was kinder, tech-wise, to OPMs, making them more entertaining to play, that never struck me as particularly realistic.

Almost everything else I can think of is better in EU4.

Because you were minting coins in excess of the supplies of precious metal (so you'd cut the alloy that made the coin with less valuable metals). Nations had been debasing their currency this way, and causing runaway inflation as a result, since at least the Roman Empire.

cue china, america and sub-sahara being crazy anti-progression to maintain the european dominance the game is built on

I agree with the point that overall eu4 have been an upgrade.
Just that i always found it to be fun to look at the religion and culture map and see them spread. I get more immersed in the game when it is so.

I'm not following. How is the reduced and increased cost on this innovation bar different than being ahead of time, or behind in tech now?

It would be a cooler graphic obviously...

By the way, is there any other 'westernized' country example other than Japan?

Siam? Egypt? Russia? Turkey?

Maybe some NA tribes could be described as 'westernized but still crushed due to their demographical tragedy' (I mean, tribes of less than 50 000 people were insignificant IRL in the same way OPM NA tribes are insignificant in EU4...)

I've been reading Why Nations Fail, which is making me wish that technology progress in EUIV was linked to Institutional reforms, and that all countries had to Westernize in some way with some trade-offs along the way. (End Serfdom-added unrest, reduce monopolies-reduced tax income, patent office, etc.) with some big reforms possibly sparking rebellion (land reform eg).

Institutional reform ideas would have to spread from particular locations, or be constrained by some other factor so the renaissance doesn't occur in India first, but it would make the whole process much more dynamic and realistic.

Generally I wish games were better at modeling Capitalism.
