My EB order showed up today, and I'm three years into my USA SP GC. (Paradox preorder will hopefully follow soon. To be promptly gifted to a friend to be named later. :) ) Anyways, two thoughts:

1. The game speed is way too slow. Extremely fast in HOI2 is about the same as fast in HOI1. That makes killing the 1936-1938 years a several hour experience. Kinda stinks.

2. So it's late 1939 - Germany entered the historical Molotov-Ribbentrop and has snarfed up Poland, but the Allies didn't do anything. Betas: is this unusual? Any chance of me getting my war, or is it time to tinker with the savegame?

What's your computer's specs? I think it's more likely it just can't run the game at max speed than that the speeds were adjusted downwards for no particular reason.

It's a crappy old thing, but it still doubles all of Paradox's stated specs: 1.2 GHz, 256 MB RAM, more-than-sufficient drivers, etc. etc.

You got the golden ticket - there's a miniscule chance that the invasion of Poland won't get the Allies involved. The UK has a 1% chance of not protecting Poland, Poland a 2% chance of not accepting an alliance - so you got the 3% cumulative chance of seeing the Allies sit it out. I'm not sure exactly what the German AI has been suggested to do in said situation, but they won't sit happily dormant. Wait and see how it goes and enjoy the alternate history ride ;) .

Strange - I have a not especially wonderful system and it zips along too fast for comfort at above-Average speeds. OK, you're doing hands-off, but I'd expect it to do a year in 10-15 minutes. I wonder if there's something about the settings on your system - memory page size etc. - that is making it run that slow?

Your best bet if you want to improve performance is to acquire more memory. As the requirements on the box state, while 128 MB is minimum to run, 512 MB or more is highly recommended. :)

It has happened to me in two consecutive (spell.?) games, but then I realized that when the game is isntallet the AI-aggressiveness level is set to weakling which may explain it.

Heck it is a blessing... Just keep on making demands and or snatch up some more minor countries. I can't imagine them staying neutral if you hit the Netherlands and Belgium.

Well, he is playing the USA...so it is kinda spoiling his fun. But I think that Germany will earlier or later declare war on either Russia or France anyway.

Quite a few historical sources indicate that Hitler would have preferred to turn against the SU once Poland was stoved away. However, the allied DOW sort of made him go 'OK, then I'll just have to quiet the allies down first'.

I had a bit of a problem with it going slow as well, but found that killing everything in the systems tray helped a lot.

As a recall germany/hitler didnt plan for a war before 1944 that was the year that the navy would have finished the z plan and also what the date that he had originally planned with italy. (isnt sure if 44 was mentiond in the plannes with italy but it was way into the 40s atleast).
Also I think that he wanted Spain into the axis to before the war.
France were allways a waypoint for hitler (revange for ww1) and russia was the "goal".

Ahh, well the start of the war wasnt to bad for germany and even for them to been able to build up way better bye then so would the soviets (wich were in bad shape) and also Brittain and France.

I gotta say, there's not a lot for the USA to do in 36-40, I'd play '39 myself.

Thanks for your replys :)

I only knew that Hitler sort of liked the English and not wanted a war with them, and that he wanted France to go down.

In my last game as germany the allies did not defend poland as well. I could take denmark, norway and belgium without any reaction. I had to direct attack france to start the ww2.

That reminds me of what my doctor said when I went in with a broken leg - he said, "you don't do very much with that leg anyways. Good thing it wasn't an arm." :)

And, sadly, the game speed is a memory thing. I opened a battle scenario, and it went zipping along. This is a horrible day for me. I understand, in theory, that I could pop some new memory in my computer. In theory, though, I could also manually time the engine on my car, install hydraulic lifts and chrome 22s, and swap out the stereo system for some 300w woofers in the trunk. The problem is that I don't have the first clue how to do either.

Guess it's time to visit the computer store... HOI2, through no fault of its own, just got a lot more expensive for me. *sigh*

I wouldn't say alot, memory is DIRT cheap right now. As far as how hard it is to change out or add memory, let's just say my 7 year old picked it up in about 4 min and understands the process.
