Wondering why this is? I always get screwed over by the AI and the titles pass from my realm. Is it because I was a count? If I were a duke would I have remained independent?

Your new primary title is a vassal, so you become a vassal yes.
If you were a Duke, your primary title would have remained that duchy, with the new duchy becoming secondary. Then you would have remained independent.

In a large realm, manipulating the internal politics is likely to get you farther than as an independent count or duke with a tiny realm. You should be thankful for your vassalization.

Everything that is said already, just to add that you can fight directly anyone within the real who has the same liege as you. So if you your direct liege is emperor, you can DOW anyone regardless of title who also has emperor for direct liege. If you think don't have enough soldiers, form few alliances with fellow vassals whose holdings is not your soon-to-be targets and then start mercilessly to fabricate claims and invite and land claimants to target counties. If you manage to become vassal king, you can use claimants to entire duchies. It is possible to become stronger than emperor in generation or few, depending on time/luck.
