Playing “The Last Karling”, Adele de Vermandois.

Won Kingdom of Thrace in Crusade.

Fought France for Duchy of Picardy, the county titles of which I now must distribute.

I’m trying to ensure that none of my French territory passes out of my realm on inheritance (and see if I can gain any upon said inheritance).

I’m focusing on unlanded French Catholics with sons already. A few are heirs to counties within France.

Question: Am I correct in assuming that if I make them vassals before anyone in France, that they will bring any inherited French land into Thrace upon inheritance (provided that France has legal vassal inheritance)?

Or, at least, that they won’t take any of the land I give them outside my realm on inheritance (provided that I have illegal vassal inheritance)?

You are correct - as long as they don't inherit a title that's the same tier as yours (or higher). In other words, if they inherit the kingdom of France then they will be ripped out of your realm because you are also only a king.

Or, at least, that they won’t take any of the land I give them outside my realm on inheritance (provided that I have illegal vassal inheritance)?

This is more complicated. My initial response was "yes, of course". But the vassal inheritance law is a crown law, not a realm law. If their title is in de jure France (and the kingdom of France exists but the empire of Francia does not), then their titles in France will use the French vassal inheritance law. And you've said above that France has legal vassal inheritance...

Caveat: This is my theoretical interpretation and I may well be incorrect. Test it out with the console (in a non-ironman game) to be sure!

EDIT - You can check which crown laws are in force in those counties by going into de jure kingdom view and holding the mouse over the counties in question. The tooltip will tell you which crown laws are active in that particular county.

Thank you. You confirmed what I was thinking (at least in theory, like you said). I wish that there was a tooltip for inheritance, to tell you the exact heirarchy in a given case. Presumably, your chancellor would be able to understand how inheritance works.

You can see the current inheritance path by clicking on the title's shield. The next few people in line are shown about 2/3 of the way down the title screen.

But I agree with your point. I try not to savescum, I really do, but succession weirdness is by far the #1 reason why I do it at all.

It also depends on the level of the title they hold from you compared to the level of the title they inherit. If you give them a county and they inherit a dutchy elsewhere, you will lose them and the inheritance laws won't stop that. If they hold a county and inherit a county it will join your realm. If they hold a dutchy and inherit a dutchy or county, it will join your realm. You can really abuse the Open Succession type if you combine it with taking prisoners in raids. (Since after you raise them with your religion and culture they will generally be willing to join your court. Then you can land them with a title equal to the one they might inherit and since they have the highest title from all the possible heirs, they become the heir.)

Those laws control who the title in your realm can pass to. It doesn't control what can pass to the people holding that title. It's why you can get inheritance warnings even if your crown laws are the controlling ones and they would forbid it from leaving.
