Playing as a republic or theocracy is about as fun a prospect as watching paint dry so in that sense I suppose potentially being optional DLC is probably a good thing.

I wonder what the Byzantine government will look like and what kind of flavour / content packs we'll see.

I'm also curious about this. I hope they're very careful. I remember that for most of CK2 history it was the same as every other title except for the addition of the despot and born in the purple mechanics (and maybe disqualification for disabilities? I can't remember), then they changed it along with the release of Holy Fury and almost everyone disliked the new system.

Either way I'm also a bit excited to find out. While as a western European I am more fascinated by the Holy Roman Empire, I can't deny that there is something almost mythical about Byzantium. An unbroken line going back to old Rome - all that history! And glorious Constantinople, perhaps the only truly Roman city remaining, Hippodrome and baths and all.

Yep, this is literally the main reason why I play 2.8.3.4 patch of CKII: they broke Bysantium, and my characters have an unhealthy habit of inheriting Bysantium once I use the inevitable Seniority. For release, it will probably be Feudal not Clan.
