Instead of mere cardinals giving you higher opinion in the eyes of the Pope, instead having a former vassals become Pope should allow you to indirectly control the papacy so long as you had and continue to have high enough crown authority and favor with the new pope. This way cardinal investment will have an actual benefit, and also crusades would now be in more politically favorable locations at favorable times rather than a randomly determined spots every decade.
