'Research' as in EU is scrapped IIRC. What remains are 'tech advances', five per century or so, as per 'Imperialism' the game.

Tech is there for all to get, but it costs some money? to implement it into your kingdom, maybe you are only paying for the upgrades on your own lands, making it cost more if you have large demesnes etc.

At least that's how I understood it..

AFAIK, you can't "skip" development steps, only postpone them (no computers without electricity first).

IIRC there was some mentioning of five steps per century, but only having to purchase four of them, or being able to.

About costs for 'skipping' I don't know. On the other hand techs are so few that they needn't be mutually exclusive, but rather evidence of different ways of handling/encouraging things in different kingdoms.

Monetary economy / Barter style

National lands / Royal demesnes
