Not this again. Britain was not the only nation to designate its tanks light-cruiser/cavalry-infantry. The most obvious is the French, with their AMR light reconnaissance tanks, Somua S-35 cavalry tanks and Renault and Hotchkiss infantry tanks. Admittedly the boundary between infantry and heavy gets blurred with the Char B1, or the boundary between medium and cavalry with the S-35, but they were still clearly designed with the light-cavalry-infantry system in mind. The Soviets also followed this method for a while, with their BT series cavalry tanks, T-26 and T-35 infantry tanks and light tanks like the T-37 and T-38.
K well... infantry support tanks are on the fence so lets just say, maybe we'll see it in a mod. But. I did a little digging and what about a seperate tech tree for IFV's with the armoured car tech tree, i mean that is a true support infantry vehicle and they were around for example the Sdkfz 234 "Puma" for Germans over 100 were produced, and US M20, Russian M2, they were out there and could add a cool element to the game.

Am I the only one who thinks that any early tank design with slower speed and higher SA would be an infantry tank?

We can modify both speed and SA through variants, right?
I don't know if we can specifically improve SA, I am under the impression currently that improving "gun" would increase all of the attack stats, i have nothing to back this up though but I can't remember seeing the option to specifically increase soft or hard attack in any WWW.

You're probably right. A general gun upgrade is more likely.

Well, I think it's a mistake to think heavy tank speeds( in game) are too low because the Tigers and such had decent tactical mobility irl. In game unit speeds are determined more by strategic mobility.

This may not be 100% realistic, but I think it's a good gameplay decision, and important for balancing.

sdkfz234-puma.jpg

The SdKfz 234 series included a more standard turreted armored car with a 20mm cannon, the Puma with the turreted 50L60 gun, a 75mm L48 forward-mounted TD version (with WAAAAAY too much recoil for the weight of the vehicle), a forward-firing short-barrel 75mm L24 assault gun, and various other models for communications, engineering, and other functions. The Puma was built in relatively small numbers (100-200), but several of the other models were much more common.

Note: SonderKraft fahrzeug (SdKfz) roughly translates to "special purpose mobile engine" - vaguely similar to the US GMC "Gun Motor Carriage" designation.

Just so you all know, heavy tank and Infantry tanks are the same thing. And looking frome the last world War Wednesday, heavy tank can be research very early on. So there is no problem right now.

Not true. Infantry tanks are slow moving tanks with medium to heavy armor, and guns designed to fight enemy fortifications. Heavy tanks are fast tanks with heavy armor with good general purpose gun. Tiger 1 tank is actually able to go FASTER than Panzer IV. It is design flaw that Tiger was slower in practice, like nearly all heavy tanks. Infantry tank on other hand is slow on design. Infantry tanks were also way cheaper than heavy tanks, infantry tanks did not really cost much more than medium tanks.

I completely agree, completely different. One is designed for a offensive role while the other is designed strictly to support completely different tactics are addressed for each design.

No, they are indeed the same. They don't need to be as slow as infantry, just not enough to not out run them. The m4a3e2 (heavy armor Sherman) could go about 30kph, much faster then you or i could walk. Also many where armed with the 3 inch gun, wtich had an inferior he to the 75 m3. the m4a3e2 was an infantry tank, but with the same armor, gun, speed(a little bit slower) of a real heavy tank m6. They are really the same thing. Also tiger 1 was used often with infantry for breakthrough.

Yeah, so with the variant system we could make our own infantry tanks. I was talking more of how the tanks already in the tech tree that were infantry tanks in real life would fit into the tech tree.

True, because you are able to completely customize your tanks right? with engine, armor etc. you can equip it with a smaller less expensive engine because its purpose is for infantry support. although it would only help with hard attack, but introducing IFV's as a late game (1942-1945) research then it could beef up the soft attack of the infantry and be very usefull
