Hi everyone,

Playing my first game in DH. I'm a hoi2 veteran w/ 200+ hours in vanilla and AoD, so I have specific build orders for most majors.

playing as germany. I normally build industries until beginning of 1938 (which gets even better when you start in 1933), when I build 16x mot/mot/arm and 12x6 inf, and then I build more inf until I have ~20-25 inf per province next to SOV; and I start barbarossa in 1940 ~march.

used the exact same build order here. but by 1940 march I only have... 3... inf per sov border province. I'm trying to understand why I failed so hard, and inf build times seem like the most likely reason.

How do you overcome this? I tried to do barbarossa with what I had (and I reached smolensk), but with the amount of inf spam events SOV gets, it doesn't seem very likely.

thx

Building times are more realistic in DH than in other versions of HoI. They are longer and you have to incorporate that in your planning.
Also, and as an example, MOT divisions were not created from scratch, they actually resulted from the conversion on INF. So, at some point, you will realize that it is faster to upgrade a INF to a MOT than building a brand new one. With the info provided ingame, you can work your own math and see what is the extra cost.
Hope that this will help.

Luci's got a point about the unrealistic build times in most versions of HoI, at least as far as peace-time builds go. Once war rears its ugly head, though, I'd argue that the coin flips and the DH times don't reflect the broader historical experience. As to what you can do about it, the answer is long build sequences with one or two lines starting right from the kick-off. The build time decreases with each unit the line produces and after it has pumped out three or four production starts to pick up momentum.

You can finesse this bonus even further by declining to switch on automatic upgrades for your production lines. Because each level of upgrade produces a relatively small increase in performance, upgrading your units is far less important in DH than other HoI games. What's more, if you delay your upgrades until your units are three or more levels below tech you can then upgrade to sub-optimum level at a much reduced cost in time and IC.

There are wrinkles in the wrinkles of this game so you do need to shed many of the preconceptions formed in other mods - and hit the boards often.

And remember that not all infantry unit have to be first line infantry. Use militia, militia+art and garisson for rear and second line duty. They build faster and can be upgraded later to infantry after Barbarossa (with enough time)
