That was a lot of fun. The Slovak field commander's adventures are just as much fun as the main T&T story line. It's good to switch things up from time to time.
You had me actually laughing out loud at the Medieval ruin upgrade bit... nicely done.
Already looking forward to the next update, whatever characters it may be centred on.

If I may speak for the readership, then... *ahem* The readership has received this very well, indeed!

Although I must wonder...Jurech claims to hate marketing calls, yet he gets sold on a deal to possibly upgrade Brad Pitt's lava? I wonder if Slovakia has somehow not even researched proper levels of whichever technology enables them to properly hate things?
That is why Jurech hates marketing calls, he always ends up being suckered into buying something. There is a logic in there somewhere.
ja_zps42369c2d.gif

They can always hope that the Mexican(?) division is first to attack and give them an excuse to withdraw with few casualties.
The mighty Mexican Expeditionary Force is just one of the many Allied divisions waiting to attack Paris, however Jurech is not looking for excuses. He wants his medieval ruin upgrade and will fight for it.

Agree! Absence will make the heart grow fonder. Well, you both know what I mean ;)

It’s ok, hate is a primal human emotion, so even Slovakia should have access to that! :D And they’re in Paris and (iirc) assigned under German command, so will have access to their tech. And it doesn’t take much advancement to hate marketing calls. :p

El Pip, this was an amusing diversion. The running line on the primitive nature of the Slovakian capital was a nice touch. It will make an interesting incentive for the Allied race to Bratty-slave-ya.
Tiso might argue that Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder, but who knows exactly what it is he puts in that hipflask? Jurech and his division still run free, assigned directly back to Bratislava HQ, but the (2nd) Division is actually fairly modern infantry (which Slovakia lacks the tech to even research, let alone build) so it's reasonable they are almost up to speed on the modern world.

I appreciate this spin-off and I'd love to see more of it, we can't afford to ignore the Slovak expeditionary troops in Paris!
By the way, is Slovak technology advanced enough to build (non-mud) walls? If so, that Mexican offensive could be stopped in its tracks...
It's a toss up, on the one hand Slovakia lacks the technology for any infrastructure, on the other hand they do have a palace and command shed. I'm going to assume they do have walls, just not very tall ones. If the Mexicans remembered to bring ladders, they will be fine.

They have the 6th panzer to function as the pikemen to the slovak musketeer line (or spearthrowers, ive completely lost the technology level at this point, its like civ). Together they can make Paris a tough tut to crack.

All in all, Jurech has has found an amazing deal here, though be wary of them hiring those mexican or canadian troops we see in the area. Think of what maple syrup and tacos together would to to the the command shed!
Slovak technology is as advanced or as backwards as required by the plot and the next joke, losing track of the exact level is a sad side effect of this. However Paris will not fold as easily as OTL that is for sure.

Apparently the Slovak national dish is Sheep's cheese and potato dumplings, so I dread to think what would happen if you added Maple Syrup and Tacos to that.

I'll admit I was pleased with myself when I came up with that bit, glad it was appreciated.

I actually came up with the Medieval ruin upgrade bit first, but couldn't see how to get T&T into the right position to use it. This led to the idea of introducing the new characters and it all fell together from there.

From the feedback it appears that Jurech and Lendvay have been well received, so I am delighted to confirm that they will return in future updates. However this remains the tale of T&T, so we must first return to Bratislava and news from the wider war...

Jurech seems far too sensible and well informed for the Slovak High Command. For instance, he knows about the advancements of medieval ruins.

DeGaulle didn't want black Free French troops to be the first ones to enter Paris. Would he be okay with Mexicans?
I'm sure he'd prefer French troops, but if that isn't possible then the priority is making sure it isn't the British or anyone else who speaks English. On this basis the Mexicans will be fine!

Wll he have a choice in the matter? :p
For the sake of the Axis war effort it is feverently hoped De Gaulle will remain in a position of influence, his ineptness is worth a dozen (Axis) divisions.

They need to stay side-dishes.:D
But not together. A maple syrup filled Taco sounds unpleasant. :shudder:

Jurech seems far too sensible and well informed for the Slovak High Command. For instance, he knows about the advancements of medieval ruins.

Jurech is Slovakian born and bred. But he has been hanging around with modern infantry for years, this has influenced his thinkings in dangerous ways. For instance he is a panzer general specialist, how is that even possible when the country (probably) doesn't even have internal combustion. All very suspicious.

Or he reminds the great times 25 years ago when Bratislava was Pressburg, a major city of the glorious empire of Austria and Hungary and filled with palaces from former centuries and a famous castle.
The internet tells me that the Slovaks did not enjoy their time under the Hungarians (in stark contrast to the Czechs who got a fairly good deal under the Austrians). The Hungarians had decided they were going to assimilate the Slovaks and behaved accordingly, this did not go well. They might have had infrastructure and technology under the A-H Empire but I doubt any Slovak nationalist would look on that period as a pleasant time to emulate.

The more I look at it the more it seems Slovakian history consists of being ruled over by another ethnic group who hates you and enjoys punching you in the face.

I dare say he will!

That is a fascinating bit of video. They do seem amazingly pleased to see De Gaulle, any idea why or are Mexican just naturally delighted to see people with distinguished noses?

I know it pains your British heart to admit it, but the man was quite popular on the international scene, from Québec to Phnom Penh to Moscow! ;)

Also, I think the accent played a part. I don't think I ever heard a thicker French accent, whichever foreign language he spoke. Truly Churchill's long-lost brother from across the Channel in this respect!

As the old joke goes - We had to take him everywhere twice, the second time to apologise for the first time. Though I can't imagine De Gaulle ever apologising, so he probably went everywhere once and was then never allowed back in.

Deep down we all love French megalomaniacs
Certainly in a straight choic between a French or German megalomaniac trying to conqueror Europe I would chose the French one every time.

Nobody does it like we do.
You really should be best at being French. It would be embarrassing for all involved if, for instance, the Quebecistanians were better at being French than actual Frenchmen.

It is heartening to see old traditions being kept up.

I do sometimes wonder how much shorter the war would have been had De Gaulle accidentally brutally drowned himself while climbing out of the boat to the UK.

But you could say a similar thing about Churchill. Christmas 1940 is probably the ideal time for a tragic accident. Battle of Britain safely won and Halifax on a boat off to exile. New leader doesn't over-commit to Greece but keeps the pressure up in North Africa, kicking the Axis off the continent before the Africa Korps arrive in numbers, they probably also hold Crete so the Med is safer. All this frees up Australian divisions to head back home so the Japanese never advance as far as they did in OTL, Singapore and the Malay barrier hold and the Japanese effort collapses due to lack of fuel and resources. Then you have less (ideally no) lend lease to the Soviet Union, a marginally saner strategic bombing campaign, ah the opportunities.

Of course in reality any new person could do all that, but they would then find new and exciting cocks up to make.

6th November 1944

Tiso and Tuka have received a terrible message; there is news from the war so they must attend another briefing in the Command Shed. These never end well so T&T have made preparations; Tiso has made sure his hip flask has been refilled and Tuka has taken his throat medicine, which co-incidentally also comes in a hipflask.

"General, please start the briefing." Tiso managed to hold the tremble from his voice.

"We have news from the Eastern Front, General Turanec reports the 1st Division is tactically withdrawing." Kubela announced.

"We already knew that!" Tuka snapped.

"How?! The carrier pigeon has only just landed." Malar panicked

"He's been retreating since he lost the Battle of Râmnicu Vâlcea in October. This is not news!" Tuka yelled.

"No, no. This is a brand new retreat." Kubela pointed at the message

ycFpym5.jpg

The Soviets are pioneering the bold tactics of leading with the cavalry. German intelligence suggests the Soviets plan is for the defenders to waste all their bullets shooting the horses so they have none left to shot at the tanks.

"After the 1st Division finished their retreat they arrived in Polovragi, where they discovered there was already a battle ongoing." Kubela explained.

"General Dumitrescu explained they were tactically withdrawing into the mountains to lay an ambush for the Soviets, so Turanec joined in." Malar finished the explanation.

Tiso thought about asking why, if the Germans were attacking up a mountain into a thunderstorm they were doing so well, before realising he probably didn't want to know.

"Is there any other news?" Tuka tried to move the briefing on.

"The British have managed an incredible intelligence coup!" Von Killinger exclaimed.

"And that is?"

"They have disguised a tank division as a motorised infantry unit!" Von Killinger exclaimed, slightly louder.

Tiso and Tuka exchanged a baffled glance.

"And this is important why?" Tiso asked.

"It will completely confuse German Intelligence, we will no longer know who or what is attacking. How is anyone supposed to efficiently die for the Fuhrer if they don't know who is shooting at them?" Von Killinger almost screamed.

"Just look at the news from Paris, we thought it was two Allied motorised divisions attacking, but it's actually an armoured division and a motorised division." Kubela presented an actual example

PNBVwP5.jpg

British 3rd Motorised Infantry Division was amongst the most fearsome of all the fictional British divisions, mainly because it was full of tanks.

Tiso considers matters.

"This is an interesting development general, but I think you've missed out the really important bit of news." He finally said.

"What did I miss?" A crestfallen Kubela asked.

"That Jurech's 2nd division had been attacked in Paris!" Tuka screamed.

B3srsmV.jpg

Bullen-Smith is a decent, well moustached, general and Lattmann is a colossal coward, but even so I think Slovakia might have a chance here. As long as 6th Panzer doesn't run away again.

"Ohh, that. I knew there was something important I forgot." Kubela slapped his forehead.

--
Notes:
Aside from the odd choice to lead with the horses while keeping the cavalry in reserve there is nothing interesting at all about the the Polovragi battle. All the generals existed, none of them are dead, surrendered or on fire. The units existed and are in the correct hemisphere. I only mention this as it occurs so rarely it is worthy of note.

The Allies have reached Belgium, despite Jurech's best efforts. I'm quite sure it doesn't have anything to do with the 5:2 ratio in Allied-Axis armoured divisions we see in that last screenshot, or the number of "German" divisions present that are actually full of Romanians, Bulgarians or Slovaks. I have full confidence that the Germans will soon push the enemy into the sea.

Poor Kubela, he reported everything he had and still gets yelled at. That's one technique Slovakia has definetly developed quite well.

Hmm 1. Pezi should retreat to get some org. to fight another day.
And the 2. Is faced with the new British Super Heavy Infantry Tank (S.H.I.T) we wish it luck!

British 3rd Motorised Infantry Division was amongst the most fearsome of all the fictional British divisions, mainly because it was full of tanks.
A baffling development. If I were to ever weave another fabrication, creating division-names like 1st Elite Medium Tanks would be important for Militia and H-ARM garrisons a must. And here I thought my MAR-GAR (codename Rag-Ram) was groundbreaking.:D

I do sometimes wonder how much shorter the war would have been had De Gaulle accidentally brutally drowned himself while climbing out of the boat to the UK.

But you could say a similar thing about Churchill.

I'll rather thank the Providence which preserved them both throughout the war and beyond.:D
