sebas379 - Wise move. The HOi3/1944/Slovakia combo is not to be trusted an inch.

markkur - An even better reaction than I had hoped for, nice to know the efforts I put in aren't wasted. I'll try and keep the same high standards.

The only other serious bit of writing I do is Butterfly Effect, and as long time readers will confirm I struggle to maintain even the current erratic and shambolic schedule. I dread to think what would happen if I tried to write anywhere else as well.

sebas379 (2) - With that and the ongoing Umlaut rationing things are looking bleak from a linguistic perspective for the Axis.

keynes2.0 - It's a toss up, generously you could say the Slovak government didn't want to give small children real guns. But then they also made them wear paper hats, which does point towards a general lack of equipment, technology, materials and self-respect.

Galbatorix994 - I was going to make a joke about Slovakia using wooden bullets, but apparently they actually existed and Germany used them as training rounds. Plus does Slovakia even have the technology for wood working?

Bullfilter - I'm glad you understand Ha_ns' reaction, it is a terrible thing for one such as him to lose a consonant, if anything his reaction was surprisingly restrained.

From Ha_ns' perspective while Slovakia was nasty, where they actually nastier than Nazi Germany? And to be honest hiding out in Bratislava and hoping he gets ignored, because all the major powers forget it exists, isn't the worst plan.

21st September.

In a show of commitment above and beyond the call of Slovak duty, Tiso and Tuka have not taken the day off after the Ha_ns Lubin experience. They have instead stuck at it, determined to finally get the cabinet sorted out so they can get back to the war. They don't know what they will do when they get back to the war, but they do feel they should probably pay it more attention.

"That was an interesting experience. Do you have any other candidates Fritz?" Tiso asked after the group had refreshed themselves.

"Baron Manfred von Killinger has also applied to be Head of Slovak Intelligence." Fritz announced.

"Isn't he the old German ambassador from years ago?" Tuka asked..

"That's the one, after his time hear he was appointed as German ambassador to Romania."

"Interesting, why does he want to come back?" Tiso asked.

"He misses the majestic low rise sheds and dirt tracks of Bratislava?" Malar suggested.

There was a short, embarrassed, silence.

"Send him in Fritz." Tiso said.

The dignified and well moustached Baron von Killinger entered, gave a formal bow and sat down.

"A pleasure to see you again Baron, I suppose our first question is why you wish to return to Slovakia." Tiso asked.

"After recent events in Bucharest I felt I could do no more there and resigned as ambassador. When I heard you had fully embraced National Socialism, I knew it was time for me to come back." von Killinger replied.

vIuHw5y.jpg

A scandal? In Bucharest? Where there is, in effect, no real parliament. How mysterious.

"Could you possibly explain what those events were?" Tuka probed.

"There was a... disagreement over the correct way to handle the National Strike that some traitorous Bolsheviks had called."

Td9oQY8.jpg

A strike in Romania! A country that actually has an industrial base! People may actually be able to notice the difference.

"That is an odd choice for a fascist dictatorship I grant you." Tuka said.

"You don't think that Conducător Antonescu was distracted by the advance of the 3rd Ukrainian Front?" Malar asked.

"The Soviets are at the gates of Bucharest." Tiso said.

"That's no excuse for a failure of discipline." von Killinger snapped.

O0dHxOh.jpg

The loss of the Ploiesti oil fields and the lack of any ports is not a concern, mainly because the entire Romanian Navy has been sunk. This leaves the armed forces free to concentrate on the Battle for Bucharest. And for a lone division to carry on mucking around in Northern Belarus while the capital is threatened, but we try to ignore them.

"So you think Antonescu may have lost his nerve since the assassination attempt?" Tiso asked.

"I am confident he will fight till the end, but I'm not sure his heart was ever truly National Socialist. Thing haven't been the same since the Iron Guard were suppressed." von Killinger reminisced.

Tiso and Tuka exchanged a glance.

"If I'm honest," von Killinger leaned in and started to whisper. "Some of them don't even want to die for the Fuhrer."

jPjP4eG.jpg

Romania's catastrophically low National Unity isn't actually that bad a handicap; they only have two provinces with VPs, Ploiesti and Bucharest, which are next door to each other. So if those two fall the country is doomed regardless of how 'united' the country is.

Tiso and Tuka exchanged another, longer, look.

"Well thank you for your time Baron, we will let you know." Tiso managed to say.

The Baron bowed and left, his exit heralded by some 'pops' and vigorous glugging.

--
Notes:
Yes that was his name, yes he was Ambassador to Slovakia for about a year in 1940 before being sent to Romania. He quit/was sacked as Ambassador in July 1944 and then hung around Bucharest until the end. He wasn't a nice chap, he picked up the nickname 'Butcher' while in Bratislava, however even while in Romania he intervened to stop some of the activities going on there. I'm going to discuss them obviously, but they were bad enough that a Nazi nicknamed Butcher Baron von Killinger was shocked.

This may be why Von Killinger (allegedly) went mad, one story has that before he committed suicide he went on a rampage shooting junior officers screaming "We must all die for the Fuhrer." Which I'd dismiss as just an over-exaggerated story where it not for the Abwher report where von Killinger was described as "Certainly not quite normal." That's 'not normal' by Nazi Germany standards, so frankly anything is possible.

Onto Romania, they are doing well to still be in the war. OTL there was a coup on 23rd August, hilariously led by the King who was still notional head of state. I like the idea of a Head of State leading a coup d'etat against his own state, should happen more often. Obviously Paradox didn't bother with that event and as the Soviets are sill struggling at Bucharest, Romania remains in the war. Probably not for much longer though.

Romania is about to fall and take the whole Axis southern flank with it! That should qualify as a situation in which a nazi about to find himself in the line of fire can be expected to act "not quite normal" i guess.

Yeah, like the Axis supreme fearless leader barking; "Bring up the 9th Army!" (whatever the # actually was) Reply: "Yes F-L!, At Once!"...followed by faint-whispering; "He thinks we have another whole Army sitting on its arse waiting for his sanity to return."

Romania had a really nasty streak of megalomaniacal dictators: Carol II, Antonescu, Dej, and Ceausescu. Quite an example for Slovakia to aspire to.
Yeah, POWER is the strongest drug known to man. Just saw a DOC on Stalin (after his Documents were released) Mega-Madness was all over the world. A few of America's top generals, i.e. MacArthur & LeMay, ended up being trapped- inside a consuming madness of their own making, that had no limits.

sebas379 - The Nazis did tend to react quite badly to things falling apart all around them. Luckily T&T have much greater reserves of stoicism. That or they never had any hope to lose.

markkur - Again not a delusion that would be a problem in Slovakia. Not even the most deranged would imagine Slovakia had even a single Army, let alone enough to justify numbers

Andre Massena - It appears someone disagrees with your list of megalomaniacal dictators. Fan of early period Carol II? Or a *spit* revisionist who wants to focus on the pro-West bits of Dej's reign and ignore horrors like the Black Sea canal?

markkur - It wasn't even top Generals who got trapped in madness; Clark was trapped in the delusion he was a semi-competent officer rather than an idiotic liability. And the less said about Montgomery-Massingberd the better.

The fact that many of them were deranged narcissists probably meant a crumbling reality didn't need to push them too far to send them over the edge. I'm sure there's a critical realist poem just waiting to burst out from the Slovakian Poet's Brigade (which seems to outnumber the actual Slovakian Army at the moment) ;).

The rest of the main Nazi's are crazed bully/cowards who either meet well-deserved sticky ends or are hunted throughout South America for the next 50 years. T&T seem almost noble by comparison. Which is damning with faint praise when you consider the comparators :(.

I can attest to the erratic and shambolic schedule of the Butterfly Effect. :(

Frankly, Von Killinger sounds like just the man T&T need in a crisis. Someone who is handy with a pistol and an expert in the preparation of smallgoods.

Very true. Clark disobeyed orders and took Rome only to have D-day happen in days and dominate the headlines. Must have been a damper on his personal-glory?

Bullfilter - This probably wouldn't work if T&T were actually the bad guys, which in almost any other circumstances they would be. But compared to the the Slovakian Poet's Brigade, they are saints.

Davout - Butterfly is a terrible drug provided by an unreliable dealer. You have given me an idea though

markkur - That is the darkly amusing part of it, despite all the damage done to the Italian campaign, all those lives wasted Clark didn't even get his headlines.

El Pip Voting Opportunity
Tiso and Tuka are struggling to pick the next Head of Slovak Intelligence from among the many well qualified ex-Ambassadors from Germany, so it is being thrown open to the vote. It should also help tide us over an upcoming lull in updates as I work on Butterfly. You choices are;
  • A - Hans "Not a German" Bernard
  • ii - Butcher Manfred 'Mad Max' von Killinger
  • 3 - Ha_ns "The Lost Continent" Elard Ludin
Malar is already busy so is ineligible, while votes cast for Jaroslav will be ritually burnt by the Voter Colonel to keep the ballot box pure - T&T are not having another Czech Communist Poet. *spit*. Polls are open until say 8th April, Florida Rules apply.

This thread is the proud owner of a mild interactivity licence granted by Mr Capiatlist many years ago and as far as I know they don't expire, so we're all mod approved and good to go. Remember, don't have the wrong sort of fun without a licence, the punishment can be severe.

Well I vote 3 for Han_ns the Chronically Inconsonant. And give him a tank to play in if that will help. It can be a stationary surplus Czech *spit vigorously* vehicle if necessary (as Slovak tech probably only allows horse-drawn armour).

He can search for missing consonants in enemy radio transmissions, newspapers, magazine articles and ads, social realist poems, etc. I'm visualising a wall display with plenty of string and map pins, 'A Beautiful Mind' style. Han_s is the Man_ for an even more insanely futile Slovakia !
