Is it just me or do this look like an incredibly inefficent way to build your navy?
wLQHHwA.jpg

I think i would rather split that into 3-4 different classes with a few more dockyards building them to speed up production?
Say if a country have 30 dockyards, use 10 for Destroyers, 7 Cruisers, 6 Battleships and 6 Carriers or something like that?
Or just skip Battleships and just put 12 dockyards into carriers.
That screenshot has always bugged me how inefficent it looks.

I think parts of it is due to the lack of oil which impaired build speed.

Its up to each player to set up their production as they see fit - with up to 15 shipyards/factories for each production line. In this case there is also decread efficiency, due to missing resources (oil).

What I miss about ship construction is some mechanism for mass production smaller ships, like convoys, subs and DDs.

If you are not going to use the ships (like pre war) you don't need to "speed up" production, at the end you'll produce the same ships. Anyway I think this screenshot is not meant to show an efficient or inneficient way of building ships but to show how the production of ships look

This sounds very possible though I would not know as I have yet not played the game myself.
if something needs 2 types of resources and you lack 1 of them you will build at 50% efficiency. If you lack both resources however, you wont be able to produce anything. With stuff that requires 3 resources it is basicly the same deal, only that production is lowered by 1/3 instead of 1/2.

As for the topic itself, i dont really see why it would be ineffective or messy. They simply distribute their dockyards to different types of ships in the same class in that example. If you wanted to only produce the newest BB and the newest CV you can of course do that if you wanted, but sometimes you might want to build the older ships for example if you created variants of them or simply cant affort the newest ones.

I can see ships having diminishing returns in how many dockyards you're able to invest per production line. There's only so much space for welders and fitters etc to be working on a single ship.

Maybe it should be done like this:
(i'm speaking only about capital ships)
Each country has a set amount of dockyards.
To build a ship you use 1 dock. And then you assign additional military factories to speed up the production.
In this case we will have a limit on the amount of ships that can be built simultaniously and in the same time will represent the fact that many parts of ship were manufactured inland.

P.S. sorry for my bad english hope you got my point.
