The idea system in Vic 2 is kind of nice in terms of representing some various incremental development based on technology. However, something that's somewhat unrealistic is that any country, without ever developing a single factory, can obtain all techs and ideas and then start pumping out fully optimized factories. It seems like it might be more realistic to rely somewhat on industry in order to provide more research into industry.

A research system that might slightly better reflect real world conditions could be expressed a few ways.

1. Random chance at gaining modifiers in X industry based on number of factories, pushing up productivity. There could also be some sort of industrial espionage to gain other countries modifiers.
2. Number of factories / % industrialization increasing research speed, or even gating certain research technologies (maybe to get most recent tech X industry output is required, though 10-year-old tech could have that requirement drop, representing the shift from cutting edge to more common knowledge.)
3. Different industries having something akin to ideas
4. Different levels of industry, making industrial tech more likely to appear in a Stellaris esque tech system.

Any thoughts / different ideas?

Wouldn't 1. and 2. make smaller nations less viable to industrialize?(think of Belgium)
Do you mean number_of_factories/some_metric_measuring_nation_size?

Also about 4. I highly dislike Stellaris's system of research because it relied too much on chance and randomness in a very arbitrary way(or so it seems to me).

What I have been thinking of is that industries employ engineers. Im thinking that your precentage of engineer pops should affect your industry research. Same with officers and military tech.
