New to the board, so a big hello to everyone.

Wonder if you can help me out, as I've played about 80hrs worth of an Ironman game as Great Britain, only to be made a junior partner in a PU with little hope of escaping :( Apologies in advance as its a long post

So, a series of unfortunate events occurred at the turn of the 18th Century. I had 10k in the bank, good stability, colonized most of North, Central and south East America and West Africa, a good king and papal controller for the last 20 years.
It all starts when without warning, the Castillian King dies, with whom I have a royal marriage. The king without a natural heir, wishes that Austria succeed him to the crown, so a PU is formed between them. However, it appears that a game event has occurred and without any option, I am forced into a succession war with Austria (we were best buds too)

Austria in my game have a massive amount of provinces in Central Europe and only second behind Russia in terms of manpower (290K). They are also allies with Portugal, Denmark and a few other smaller countries (Castille too because of the PU) making their ally force quite considerable. My ally's are Milan (small) and Ming (far).

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the war lasts about 10 years, I manage to concede defeat to the smaller country's and Portugal without too much loss. I manage somehow to get a grip of the seas by making raids and capturing boats and then taking Denmark's capital whilst their main army was stuck in France to get them out of the war. Austria finally let me surrender by paying 4k ducats and releasing Brittany as a sovereign state.

Whilst the war was happening, I incurred a ridiculous amount of War exhaustion, which in turn created rebels across the globe and caused me to spend about 2k ducats in army\navy maintenance. But the worst of all is that I had about 3 kings die on me, then my heir die after one of those events which asks you to spend ducats to get a 50/50 chance of him surviving (does he ever survive these??). Finally, this "fool" inherits the crown with 1 admin 0 diplo and 0 military - what a bloody disaster!! The legitimacy reduces to 20.

Right! So, after 2 year's, I start getting things back to normal, defeat all the rebels, hire some good advisers and then BAM, that crappy king dies and I am entered into a PU with Austria. Just to remind you that this was all based on game events not really going my way.

So, this is my situation and my strategy:

I am a lesser partner with Austria, who have man power of 290k, I have 150k. They are still allied with Denmark and Portugal plus have Castille on their side, a combined man power of about 700k. I have a massive navy (180 ships) against a combined 400. To get out of this PU, I need to start an independence war, goal is to defend my capital. My initial strategy will be to create an army of 150k on mainland Britain + around 220 ships. Use the Navy to keep as many transports at bay and when armies do land, take them down with the full force of my army. Do you think this is a viable strategy? I tried looking up the Warscore needed to win, but cannot find it. If I successfully defend my capital for lets say 10 years, should the warscore tick enough in my favor? I do have about 4 provinces on mainland Europe, the rest are all of Ireland, colonized areas and a little of India. I am probably going to become bankrupt, lots of WE and have copious amounts of rebels across my regions. I might consider stockpiling AD and dip points to pay off WE and keep stab up. I also understand that patriot nobles may cause the union to break, but I'm not sure how\if and when they would spawn

Any advice (especially on Warscore needed) would be much appreciated.

yes your strategy seems sound enough. I would focus on your island and maybe the new world, don't even bother with anything on the continent. All you need to do is hold your capitol, just like it says, should be easy honestly as GB.

My current game, all of a sudden my heir dies, next month my ruler, minor in PU under Spain (playing as Portugal). I almost instantly declared war, wiped their armies and it only took maybe a year or less before they gave in. It was after a big war with france, they were already crippled when the PU started so I didn't hesitate, but you could look for similar weakness with austria.

Not sure for you, but for me WS needed to break free from Spain was only 22, heck I even took territory from them while I was at it, and they still ally me and are "cordial".

I frankly didn't know that a human could be a junior partner in a PU...

Anyway, you probably only need 5 years of protecting London to get the ticking war score. Especially if you can nab a few of their properties and beat down their armies. But, if they take more of your lands then you will have a much more prolonged war.

Breaking free is always 22 warscore. I broke free of oriat horde and her allies (30K) as Mongol khanate (6K) so, yes it's possible. Easy, in fact as GB. They'll get minimal warscore for occupying non-European provinces so ignore those. Scorch indefensible continental European provinces and crush any fool who tries to invade GB proper. You'll win easily. Once length of war ticks down they will gladly grant independence.

Thanks all for the advice, especially scorched earth as that should prove a bugger for the enemy on my star bastion provinces in mainland Europe. Will give it a try today and hopefully break free from this tyrannical rule!!
