The way it currently is, if a Duke or Count is indepedent and they have a "mother" title, they pledge allegiance. Now I like this on some levels. For instance, I saw Germany wracked with Civil War, only to eventually pull back together. The downside of this though, is that break-away vassals will always end up coming back. Why not have them pledging allegiance be based on their power? A strong Duke that successfully breaks off should continue to stay broken off, unless badly beaten up and "power" reduced. Thoughts?

Yes, it's terrible the way it is, with absolutely no independent counts or dukes. Hopefully by the time this Beta is over it will be changed.

On the other hand if they keep it that way, or even if they don't, countries that were historically indepedent could be made kingdoms so they can't pledge alligence. Genoa for instance pledging to Italy is not right, I think. Genoa should be a kingdom level republic, just like Venice is.

I did notice that if the independent guy has a claim on the title of higher level guy he is supposed pledge allegiance to, he won't. For example, I saw count of Gloucester go independent and he had a claim at King of England. He never pledged allegiance. So it would be possible to have for example Catalonia and Brittany stay independent by giving them claim on king of Aragon and France respectively. Of course this would give player playing Catalonia or Brittany easier time and might cause odd results with AI too.

Does it affect AI though? AI is immune to loyalty effects of badboy, so are they immune to this too?
