With all the new Civic's coming up bosting Leaders and giving other special bonuses - I think we need an Increase in the Civic Limit.

We start with 2 - Research 2 more on the way. Maybe even giving out the 3rd one on the first Capital Research.

i'd rather start with 3 at the start....having 2 delayed depending on a dice roll if u roll badly is not good.. also for new
players too the game would be confusing too pick up 2 in the game at some point

Maybe even some locked in permanent civics can allow you to pick a third one at the start?
Like for example, Angling Despoilers can have catalytic processing as a special third?
I wouldn't even mind having a downside to them either.

I feel like the other issue is a lot more civics have the 'cannot change' after taken. I feel like the following civics need to be changed to origins, and likely make origins a option selection as well:

  • Inward Perfection
  • Fanatic Purifiers
  • Idyllic Bloom
  • Barbaric Despoilers
  • Eager Explorers
  • Anglers
  • Criminal Heritage
  • Privatized Exploration

I thought I had mentioned, but I think you should get like 2 origin pics them, so you can mix and match. Would that make a difference, or still bad from your perspective?

I don't like it being all through techs, civics are more of a cultural thing and this is where Traditions and Unity comes into play. I wouldn't remove the one we already have, but I would add a Civic slot for completing all 7 Traditions and have a Civic Slot gained from an Ascension Perk. I would rather technology be used to improve the benefits of civics than give new ones.

Not as much with the locked civics, but if you get bioascencion, I think Catalytic Proccessing should be free. Accepting the chosen one as your permanent leader shouldnt drop all your civics just give Imperial Cult for free. Other Ascension Perks could make other civics they fit with thematically free as well. Synthetic Ascension could give a choice of Mashine Empire Civic for free (within reason). The total Cap would be 5, so you can't go crazy with 100 civics.

Yeah, that could suddenly even cripple your economy
It force changes all your Ethics and Civics. I was doing a RP as the Brotherhood of Nod so Ofc I want to make Kane the Chosen one ruler with Imperial Cult, but it would break my militarist ethic and remove some good civics I like with that roleplay, very unsatisfying. this was before Cyborg Ascension was a thing which would work well with the Nod fantasy.

Kane I would not peg as fanatic Authoritarian, as long as they believe in him they are more or less free to serve in his name as long as they don't undermine him. Kane himself is Materialist like the Emperor of Man, but encourages the Religious Worship among his followers. Peace through Power is a very militarist Slogan and I think the Brotherhood does earn a Militarist ethic.

I’d love for 3 Civics to start with and 2 more unlocked through the Administration tech line, or maybe one through tech and one through an unlocking half of the available ascension Perk slots. Maybe that would be too much, but I feel more civics leads to more variation on the sorts of empires that can be created, even if there could be meta issues with it. I could see some civics becoming autopicks, but it would also allow some of the wackier impactful but not so great civics to more viable.

Maybe 3 at start one through tech, and one through a dedicated ascension perk?

I initially wrote ascension perk but changed it to half of ascension perks. The my logic is that an ascension Perk takes up a limited slot, while tech is “free” in the sense that once you’ve researched it, you just have it. Trading an ascension slot for a civic feels like it could cause issues where the endgame number of civics not received from events would no longer be consistent, and the power level of civics v ascension perks would need to be more closely evaluated, otherwise you either get an auto pick perk or a useless perk.

Every time we get new options people go "I can't decide, just let me get all of them!"

No. Make a decision. Make some trade-offs. Decide what you value and what you don't.

This is why I like the Ascension Perk option and hate the tech option. The Perk is another trade off, more options, the tech is less options its a thing your always going to get the only question is when.

Also there will still be plenty of trade offs if the limit is 4 or 5, wouldn't go above 5 though.

I think for civics, at least for me, it’s not about indecisiveness so much as the amount of combinations. There are more combinations to fill three slots than two, and more combinations to fit five slots than three. It’s about more variation about the sorts of empires you can create and allowing for some of the more niche civics to shine.

You’re not wrong overall though, I agree with you when it comes to things like Tradition Trees and Ascension Perk slots. I just find the number of civics slots to be a bit too limiting.

I mean I actually think tradition limit should be increased but it has a separate opportunity cost, the Unity expenses getting really out there so only a Unity focused empire can get at it rather than all the empires in the game.

Now If you focus Unity you fill out Your 7 traditions about a decade before everyone else and your making excess Unity that can only be spent on edicts which isn't a progression method. Science never stops progressing, the repeatables kick in and the resource never losses value like Unity does.

I mean obviously, *definitionally* having more options increases the number of combinations, provided the number of selections doesn't exceed half of the total number of options. That's just simple mathematics. The problem is it also increases *power* and *complexity*, especially at the start of the game.

Power increases are fine imo if the game is balanced around it. It’s currently balanced around 2 into 3, if they went for 3 into 4 or 5, other parts of the game or the civics themselves would need to be balanced to account for that, and considering their recent track record with overhauling huge aspects of the game, I think that would turn out fine. Having two civic slot pickups through the game would also smooth out the transition from early to mid to late game.

As for complexity - lots of people come to Stellaris and other Paradox games for the deep complex mechanics that the genre is known for. I guess the entire point of what I’m trying to say with wanting more civics that I want more complexity with empire creation, and the ability to play around with combinations of 3 instead of the much more limiting combinations 2 civic choices provide.

See, here's the thing: What you want, and what's actually best for the game, does not have a perfect overlap. The fact that you want it doesn't actually make it a good idea. Traditions, Civics, and Origins should not just be a checklist, they should be strong, *mutually exclusive* decisions about the nature of your empire. If all you're doing is collecting a giant pile of stuff, you aren't actually making bold, complex decisions: You're just hoarding. Good strategy games are just as much about what you *can't* do as what you *can.*
