This faction is so bad, but so bad, that it made me know a curious thing: that when the same kind of war is declared 30 times, the 31th one forwards will always be "x Civil War to Increase Council Power", without any number. A cooldown is necessary!

Edit: Just to clarify, every single vassal of mine is a viceroy, and most are my of kin. As soon as I land someone, they hate me with all their strength. ;(

Vassals having NAP with their liege don't join factions ... and they leave them when a NAP is formed.
So proper marriage policy and giving land to relatives does wonders here.

When Wardec comittee is enforced and the council is content, vassals appointed to your council can't be in a faction. So just make that pesky faction leader a councilor.

Or just make the vassals hate each other more than they hate you. Some clever land distribution will do that.

That is seriously good to know. So instead of marrying off your daughters to random foreign nobles, you marry internally and they stay out of factions. Combine that with the Council positions and I bet you could even keep a larger kingdom or small empire under wraps that way.

Someone used their Spymaster to force him into a faction... you can also do that AND use your Spymaster to force characters OUT of factions.

People really need to learn more about the game here.

Could also have used a favor to force them in, I had that happen to me the other day...

Right, so the choice is give the council the most important powers in the land or be a total tyrant? Where's the balance in that? If that's what you have to do in every game to stop these annoying factions then you may as well not even play Conclave.

Those are not the most important powers to give vassals.

The most important are imprisonment and title revocation. As long as you can imprison and revoke titles freely, you can be the most secure tyrant in the world. Sure, everyone will probably want to plot your death, but with a content council, they cannot form factions even at -100 opinion. With the most powerful vassals on the council, there isn't enough firepower among your other vassals to make factions that can even break the 70% threshold. And since the powerful vassals cannot form factions, who is going to stop you from imprisoning people or revoking their titles? No one, that's who.

War declarations are easy enough to handle even without favors (plenty of glory hounds and zealots on the council most of the time, or pragmatists who will vote to DOW anyone who is weak). Passing laws just requires greasing a few palms every once in awhile. And since (usually) your chaplain and spymaster will not be powerful vassals, getting favors from them is cheap.

Bullocks. Then you aren't playing in a Byzantine sized empire. You give them voting, and war decs, they keep coming back for more. They get banishment, and title grants, they keep coming back for more within a decade. Opinion or tyranny matter not when you inject the AI with this arbitrary artificial ambition to turn his country into a democracy.

Did you even click on the link? If you think a realm with 837 holdings is not big enough, then I wonder what you think is a large empire. Also, I suspect you didn't click the link, because no one is coming back for more power. With the powerful vassals on my council, they cannot form factions as long as the council is content. Their ambition or opinion is irrelevant.

The council is extremely easy to placate. The only problem I have with Conclave is that tribals that switch to fuedalism get kind of hosed because they basically start as a Republic in 800AD. If that gets fixed I'll be perfectly happy with Conclave.

This is a fair point. Getting any kind of real power in a tribe-turned-feudal is an uphill battle. I'm not entirely sure why it is set up that way.

From my experience, these factions are fairly manageable even on emperor tier with a good spymaster. I quite usually empower the council with war declaration (a must to keep it content) and banishment (which i rarely use), and retain all other powers for myself.

What is concerning about it, however, is that the AI is absolutely inept of handling it. If you are a vassal (duke or king) and your liege cant handle it, well, fine, why bother? But if you are the liege (king or emperor) and your dukes and kings get wrecked all the time, it is quite a problem. Occupied counties hurt your taxes and levies by a lot.

I used to land new duchies by appointing some counts and make the most capable (or deserving) one a duke. This is simply not possible anymore. A 3 county duchy where the duke has 2 count-vassals will either be constantly in the state of civil war, or the duke gives in to ludicrous demands like establishing seniority succession (which messes up your entire realm structure eventually). Even 4 county duchies with 2 count vassals are somewhat unstable. Thus, i usually land now dukes with a sufficient demesne to keep their counts in check, which requires at the very least 50% of the counties in said duchy. Even so, these dukes will retain gavelkind until they hit legalism level 3, thus internal conflicts are at best postponed for one generation in the earlier start dates.

The main problem here is, that is not really dependend on realm size. A fairly small kingdom with one duke vassal will already experience these problems, and suffer relatively more from it..

I only replied like that because it seems there are many, many, MANY people on this forum that don't know how to do the simplest management with a Spymaster (or other job) and then flip their shit about how "broken" things are. I'm just bitter and jaded.

To be fair the CK2 method is to get a the best spymaster you can, plop that single spymaster on the appropriate province, and hope that RNGesus favors you. There's not a lot of utility there. In my opinion, the whole councilor RNG thing in CK2 is inferior to EU4 diplomats/missionaries/settlers since, while the latter has occasional RNG events that foul things up, you at least can figure out or know when things will happen.

Sure, getting stronger than your vassals, I can do that.

If I had the chance to do that before the "fun" starts. Empowering yourself at the cost of your vassals; a project that could take a few decades. Three civil wars for council authority; within ½ of a lifetime of a ruler.

Also:
Currently playing Sri Lanka and I've never had this faction for a hundred years or so :)

Same goes for other playthroughs, I didn't had much problem with this. There was NO repeating cycle. I'm just not THAT bad player :)
Condescending tone at the end aside, how large is your kingdom? If it's just Sri Lanka, heck, that's about 5 counties. If it includes a few more kingdoms on the mainland, that's still only 2-5 duke vassals.

Any larger, more decentralized empire will always fall to the cycle. It is very, very hard to avoid. Usually I just give in. Let them have wardec.

If you can't get stronger than them early on, then yeah, you have to give them War Decleration, but nothing is stopping you from growing stronger after that and then assume Absolute power.

It's quite easy to manage the factions, even when huge. Use kingdom Viceroyalties, marry internally to form non-aggression pacts with your vassals, and allow the council to vote on war declarations, then put your powerful vassals on the council. You don't really need anything else. I'm able to manage an empire covering most of India this way.

The only real problem I have is that it's pretty much guaranteed that you will have a revolt every time a new ruler appears. You can somewhat mitigate this by being strong and planning ahead by forming marriages with grandchildren internally, but in Conclave factions feel less controllable. Due to the nerfed opinion modifiers, your options are basically either: spymaster, marriage, or war declaration committee. Gifts are nowhere near as effective, and honorary titles border on uselessness.

They should add the ability to use favors to pull people out of factions, and get people out of factions in return for a favor.

Like many things in Conclave, good ideas, but needs a bit of polishing.

IMHO, it doesn't even make any sense that random vassals would start factions to increase council power. Unless they hate their liege, they should technically prefer there only being one person they have to suck up to to get their claims pressed.

So here's a suggestion for modders/devs: Make it so only members of a discontent council can start a faction to increase council power, but make it so the council is automatically discontent for a few years if their power gets lowered. That way we'd see a realistic backlash against taking away the council's power, while avoiding faction spam from people who really shouldn't even care about the outcome.
