I'm not sure where you're headed with this AAR MrT but I'm definitely interested. Bring it on!

Ya know, after a start like this you're setting us up with some seriously high expectations! :D

I'd love some commentary on why The Palatinat. And if you're feeling creative, what is the REAL history behind that name?

The Palatinat's name, not Incognito. I think we've beat that horse to death.

being as how everyone else has made ample light of your spelling mistake, i won't delve into that anymore. :p

the palatinat.... could there be a more obscure nation? ;) very interesting choice, mr t/incognito. i never would have thought of choosing that particular nation. all the more reason why i'm sitting here reading instead of typing an AAR (that may soon change though..). if this one is half as entertaining as your timurid AAR was, we're in for a hell of a show. :)

Hi all.

Well, just goes to show you what happens on a long weekend of fishing, drinking, eating, drinking, poker, drinking, EU2, drinking and…err…did I mention drinking yet?

My idea, with this thread, was to write an AAR from the point of view of the AI as it plots and schemes against the feeble human player. In particular, I wanted to make it a humorous series of twisted illogical rationalizations for some of the things that we all notice the AI doing during the game…things like sending 56,000 men into Istria to besiege the Venetians in a land area where the maximum supportable amount is 8000; or breaking off a siege when a city has almost fallen and march away home for no particular reason; as well as poking some fun at the AI cheats (like no naval attrition, following the player’s inflation, etc.).

As I thought about it over the weekend, played the first 75 years or so of the game, and tried on several occasions (in various conditions of sobriety or lack thereof) to write the first couple of instalments I kept running into the same problems: How do I make it fresh and entertaining for more than one or two posts? How do I present a point of view that is controlling every single army and country except for the one I’m playing? How do I stay sane enough to keep track of it all (builds, RMs, etc.) and how do I present it in such a way that you don’t all die of boredom?

The answer, regrettably, is that I just can’t get my mind around it right now. As heagarty mentioned in a post above, the intro does set you up with some serious expectations, and I thought - when I started the thread on Thursday - that I could live up to them and that the idea would work. In practice, however, I can’t see any way to do it in any form that won’t start off with a couple hysterical (to me) posts and then plummet into the depths of recycled jibes at the AI that will get tired pretty fast. The final nail in the idea’s coffin is that I realise that my own inclination at the moment is to continue writing “serious” in-depth material and that, though appealing, a romp through a humorous diversion just isn’t in the cards for me right now (especially after I lost a massive pot when my four aces were beaten by a straight flush – yes…wild cards were in play).

And so I came to the conclusion that I am simply not able to make this worth reading and that, until I can chart out a course for this to take that isn’t likely to die a quick death, it would be better to apply my focus elsewhere. I will continue to revisit this idea, though, since I think there’s some good potential in it. If I can figure out how to make it work, I’ll definitely give it a whirl. Hence, at least for the time being, this thread is being aborted in favour of something else that is considerably more in keeping with my mind set right now and that I think (hope) will interest you.

Sorry; and I really do appreciate the enthusiasm with which you all greeted my initial post.

There is, however, some good news: My Palatinat game has suggested several intriguing possibilities and I have a germ of an idea that I intend to pursue instead. It will probably take me several days to piece it together before I’ll be ready to begin posting, but look for an AAR soon that arises from my game. Hopefully, once I get going, you will decide that it was the right choice.

Regards…

MrT

Well, MrT, them's the breaks. I do have a suggestion for the next time you try something like this.

Instead of trying to do the point of view of AI as it controls everything, pick a one-province minor that the AI is running and do it hands off. Just recording everything that the one province minor does. Since it wont last long on the right settings (max aggressiveness should do the trick), you won't be obliged to keep it going forever. That might make things easier.

For added fun, have the nation you pick for the hands off part drive its inflation up. This will cause the AIs inflation to rise, prompting a slew of funny jibes such as "What? my inflation rose again? What is the damn human doing over there in Dakota!!"

In the mood for something serious? Hmmm... I wait in anticipation.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out but sometimes that's what happens. I'm looking forward to your next idea.

Don't hold your breath. It will be a long, long time before I'll have the guts to tackle even a year or two of this one. It seemed like a great idea at the time, but as I began to try writing it I realised that I simply wouldn't be able to do it and maintain any sort of quality over more than the space of a half-dozen posts.

I'm glad that the response, yours included, was so positive...and I continue to while away the hour's commute (each way :() to and from the office by trying to figure out exactly how I could do this with some measure of success. I have a couple of ideas, but I'd need a lot more than that before I took the plunge.

Instead, I've decided to write a short ( ) novella. The link's in my sig. ;) As it happens, I'm working on the next instalment right now. :)
