Its important that he didn't really want a divorce in the modern sense, as these didn't exist at the time. This is because according to the bible marriage is for eternity, so for a marriage to be seen as no longer there between two participants an "annulment" was called where it was said the marriage wasn't valid in the first place (usually on the grounds of no children i.e. god has forsaken their union, or adultery before marriage etc.)

BUT
even during the middle ages this was a very tricky and expensive process, especially for feudal rulers who were under strict scrutiny from the church, who didn't want to be granting annulments here there and everywhere. In the cultural context of the era this was literally a matter of eternal damnation or eternal bliss.

EDIT: Especially seeing as the reformist ideas of a "personal" religion were almost heretical, meaning if the Catholic Church disapproved of you, people thought god did too.
I'm from Spain. Here we had to plea the Church for annulements until the 1980s. My point was even in the 17th century, even in a situation where the Papacy couldn't afford any more enemies (Reformation) still you couldn't marry whoever you liked without the consent of the Pope. What could have done a regular ruler on the Middle Ages? Next to none.

The fact that divorcing from the Catholic Church was "easier" than from his wife always seemed fun to me. (Note the quotes).
It didn't end well for either of them. The Pope faced opposition in his own ranks (there was even an assassanation attempt) and the Emperor slowly but steadily lost control over the empire, which had lords that supported him and lords that supported the Pope. Several civil wars ensued, eventually Henry even had to fight his very own son (and died 9 days after defeating him in battle).

Anyway (and I think we agree here) any incestous marriage would have been declared illegal and noone would have had the power in Christian Europe to challenge this. Not to mention the public outcry.
That's what I mean. It's not like both of them could do their will unopposed, it had consecuences for both. But that's the way politics are.

Most people dont undrestand essence of power. Power belongs to thouse who can enforce it not thouse, who declear they have power.

console wont be enought, becouse that didnt piss of pope, that dont, make vassals to hate you, that wont give you reason to revoke and that dosent add flavor events, for breaking "pope law"

Point is not sticking your sister but, ability to break law becouse you can. If you go bank and ask 1 million USD then you wont get nothing, couse you dont have it and you dont have a a power. If you go bank with bomb belt and machine gun and make same demand you have big change to get it. Couse you have power, Ruler makse a law. It is same as ruler decleares pope has no power and put anti-pope on stage. So pope dosent have a a power. And thouse who have power can enforce the law.

Mad emperor can enforce law where every one must marry a sibling, and all law breaker will die, that is essence of power. People, soldier are just a tools to enforce it. But true power comes from ability and capability

Medieval rulership was based on consense with other people... Absolute monarchies were the ruler was the state and could do anything was AFTER the middle ages.

Furion Matsuya,

Why you cant undrestand, point is not sticking your closerelative, even marring him/her. Point is what people can do. And act and punishment with it. If it is forbiden and you still do it then there will come chaose what will destroy your power and dynasty if you cant handle it.

All might emperor of Britannia as i am. My count vassal come to me to ask blessing to marry his sis, so i have power to give blessing, but i dont have power to deny them marriage. And lets say i give them blessing, but pope wants him killed, so i have to power to defend him from pope, if i decide. And even if i deny him marriage, i can try to imprison him for not following my almight command, or kill him. But im dont unseer divine force what can build mental wall between them and stop them considering to be married,i only can enforce my law and decision by force.

Middle Ages. You are NOT an almighty emperor. You are an emperor bound to feudal and social consense. Absolutism wasn't a thing during the middle ages.

As the plague is coming, this becomes something important!
If the last man and woman of our entire race is brother and sister, will god allow them to marry?
No?...GG to mankind, it was a good ride. :p

But seriously, if they love each other so much that don't care any punishments like excommunity, imprison, opinion penalty or even death threat....Why not?
As long as they can stand together against world.(Rulers around them will attack them for excommunity CB, their subjects will revolt, people in their count will not loyal to them...But, if a ruler is so determined, why he cannot?)
Medieval rulers can be mad, can be lunatic, can be zealous, can be ridiculous. But, they cannot marry their sister when they really want no matter the cost? Really?

Humanity would die out anyway even if the two survivors would be of completly different gene pools (like a Japanese and an Ethiopian).
From what I know you need at least 160 people to have the human race survive and prevent degradation of the gene pool (which is also the reason why the myth of creation is just that a myth).

But since we get the rule chosing menu with all of the weird stuff just also give an option for ibreed marriages.

For ibreed just like for ipod and similar things you probably first have to get a license from apples istore.
