"Let them call me rebel, and welcome, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of devils, were I to make a whore of my soul by swearing allegiance to one whose character is that of a sottish, stupid, stubborn, worthless, brutish man."
--- Thomas Paine, The American Crisis
Discussion between Adolf Hitler and Francisco Franco, Spanish Fascist in Exile.
January 27th, 1937
Berchtesgaden, Bavaria
Adolf Hitler:
As I have told you before, you may stay here in Germany as long as you like. After the fall of France, I will restore you to power in Spain.
Francisco Franco:
The fall of France? Are you joking me? When your aide told me this on the train, I thought for certain he was mistaken of your words.
Adolf Hitler:
No, France will fall. There is only so far that I can push before they will declare war. Perhaps it will be over Czechloslovakia, perhaps Poland. At some point they will have been pushed too far. And they shall walk into our fist.
Francisco Franco:
You seem quite confident. Are you sure it is well placed?
Adolf Hitler:
We already have an army larger than that of France. And they have distributed their army in North Africa and Southeast Asia. Ours is concentrated. I have more than enough to hold the French at the Rhine while Poland is disemboweled. Then I will march through Belgium and do the same to France.
Francisco Franco:
And of the British?
Adolf Hitler:
The British Army is a joke. The Belgians are more fearsome. What concerns me is the British Navy and it is only a matter of time until Alfred Saalwächter's vision of a carrier armada is a reality.
Francisco Franco:
And what will become of the Spanish people while I wait here for your plans to come to fruition?
Adolf Hitler:
They shall suffer under the Republicans. The people of Spain did not rise up for nothing, after all. By the time you return you will be like a fresh breeze blowing new life into Spanish society.
Francisco Franco:
I hope you are right. I truly do.
*Carl Friedrich von Siemens, Chief of the Air Force enters the room*
Adolf Hitler:
Carl! Come sit and speak with us.
Carl Friedrich von Siemens
Of course, my Führer. What is it you wish to discuss?
Adolf Hitler:
Tell me about your new interceptors?
Carl Friedrich von Siemens
Well the last of the ME-109Ds has been completed. The factories have been retooled to produce the upgrades necessary to bring them up to the 109E model. Within a few months we should have three full air wings of 109Es. Anything France throws at us will be shot out of the sky.
Francisco Franco:
The 109Ds did not arrive in Spain in time. Perhaps if we had received them earlier....
Adolf Hitler:
I cannot be held responsible for the intervention of the Soviets. Had I known they would provide the Republicans with such enormous resources I would have intervened sooner, Francisco.
Francisco Franco:
I am not laying blame, herr Hitler. I am merely pointing out that we could have potentially turned the tide. It was a close fight.
Adolf Hitler:
In war, there is no room for second place. We all must accept that. This is why when we move against France and Poland it must be quick and deliberate. No hesitation, no doubt. There is no room for error. Hungarian assistance will be vital in this effort as well.
Carl Friedrich von Siemens
Agreed, my Führer. The Hungarians will prove useful allies...
