Sorry for the hiatus. I will definitely be taking this AAR to completion, but I reached a point where after doing this for a year (I started in April 2012), I needed a break. And I had the gut feeling that I needed some distance to the Zagwes so I could reinvigorate the story. Also, I had a number of high-pressure projects come up that were pulling me in very different and incompatible directions. But I kind of let time get away from me, and I should have communicated the temporary nature of the break. I apologize about that.
I have made two decisions that, I hope, will improve the narrative of the AAR. The first is that completion of the AAR might not be the actual end date of the game. Of course, if doom does finally exterminate the Zagwe dynasty, that is obviously both game over and an end to the narrative. But on the other hand if the Zagwes survive and live to reclaim their birthright--the Throne of Abyssinia--that would be in my eyes a more fitting completion of the narrative than if the game happens to run out in the 15th century. I just want to prepare people for a shorter possible story if things go well for the Zagwes in reclaiming their heritage. (There would probably be some time spent in Abyssinia before closure; we would have to let the Zagwes learn how to enjoy tej again, for example.)
The second decision concerns a process change that will cause another short delay. All along I have had the process of playing the game for only a bit ahead, then catching up with the narrative. That seemed to work when the Zagwes were trapped in Sennar, where not much was happening as far as the game was concerned. But now that the Zagwes have some real power the game elements seem to be taking control, forcing the narrative to stay in the back seat. Personally I'd prefer the narrative to have equal or greater power than the game elements. So I am going to play the game out for quite a bit longer, probably several generations. Then I'll string the narrative along the plot points the game and I work out together. This should make it more cohesive and less concerned with trivial events (which you can never be sure are not trivial unless you play it out longer).
So there will be a bit more of a hiatus. Let's plan on my starting to post the ongoing narrative the first week in August, and then just continuing to play out the narrative after that with all the game play and screen shots I've amassed. Thank you for your patience in the short term. It will be like the summer break to a television series.
Thanks so much for reading the AAR. And always remember to avoid startling the baboons.
