The end comes.

The Huguenots at La Rochelle protested the moves made by the Emperor of France and rebelled. Richelieu ordered the destruction of the city. The King and his minister were agreed, the freedom and privileges granted this sub culture would someday lead to a weak France. When La Rochelle fell the freedoms Henri IV had granted them would be revoked, Protestant cities within a specific distance of Paris would not be fortified, and any existing fortifications would be destroyed.

The move made the King popular among the Catholic nobles, but they too would feel the sting of Richeleu’s reform. He remembered well how a few years earlier the nobles labeled him a traitor and it was now the Cardinals turn. He destroyed fortifications that protected cities controlled by the nobles, and made illegal settling a dispute by duel.

But two suns cannot rise, and the Habsburgs once more try to keep their own aloof a bit longer. The Emperor declares war on Prussia starting a new and perhaps even more determined alliance against France. Algiers, Venice, Spain, Turkey, and England were all major players in the fighting. Happily the armies of France marched on the Dutch, eager to end the menace to the north.

The Armee of Flanderes moved north and took Zeeland by assault, the lands were now familiar and the commanders had no intention of allowing the Dutch any time to put up a series defense. Also the Iberian army was treading familiar ground and Emile and Sierra Nevada were soon in French hands, the offensive then moved to Gibraltar. The armies took Veneto in July, and on November 13 the Habsburg seat of power at Vienna was taken. Louis XIII and Richelieu promptly made a visit to the ancient capital. There Louis XIII declared himself Emperor Louis Bourbon XIII of France (ooc: Ala William I declaring German Empire at Versailles).

1634 the first peace was signed giving Apulia, and thus the Spanish foothold in South Italy, and Sierra Nevada. Originally the hope was that Sierra Nevada would gain independence and the Muslim forces would fight with France as a ruler of South Iberia, but alas it was not to be. In April the humiliated Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire gave up Styria. A few days later the Berber pirates gave up Atlas.

In July the Dutch were annexed into the French Empire, thus avenging the earlier loss. In August the English once more fought us to a stand still in the colonies. But this was a new beginning, the colonial Empire of Portugal and the United Provinces were combined with the armies of France, now the Europeans had something to fear.

1634 the city of Bura became the leading center of trade for the Islands of the East Indes and as such brought in wealth that had never been seen before. For the next two years Richelieu resigned himself to domestic affairs, but a falling out with the Emperor at the end of his life soured the two’s relationship. Nevertheless Richelieu could think only of the Empire he had helped create, he recommended a man named Mazzarin as a replacement.
