Hello everyone,

This is my first AAR, although not the first Europa Universalis game. :) I patched game to 4.1, and it is more challenging than in unpatched one.

I will play Lithuania, who looks big, but is very economically poor, surrounded by many countries who would gladly carve it. To the north we have Teutonic Order, who is a foe for centuries, to the south Golden Horde with numerous armies and hunger for war. To the east - Muscovy, rising power of the russians and future competitor for the domination of surrounding areas. To the west lies Poland, a friend, an ally and a possible pretender to Lithuania's lands.

Note: Any advice is ALWAYS welcome :)

Current status of Lithuania: Lithuania is lesser partner in personal union with Poland, at war with Golden Horde. Stability is

-1, half territory has revolt risk, income is minimum.

Before i start i do some necessary reforms. I switch my infantry from bardiche to eastern medieval. i lose 1 morale on defence

but get 1 shock on offense which i think is better.

mhgbo.jpg

Next i move 1 step to centralization and of course get something nasty

VWzwA.jpg

New advisors hired, budget set.

4WnX8.jpg

I unpause and move my glorious army towards Smolensk which is captured by rebels. First assault on fortress failed, so now i

rest and wait for morale to recover, however news of failure reaches Lithuania and i get this:

bGwOc.jpg

Tax is abolished, people are happy, war may continue. My first mission was to Save Podolia, which was besieged by evel rebels,

our good ally Poland saved the day

di2Tx.jpg

One week later, a swarm of Golden Horde soldier came and slaughtered polish army...

1400 march 17, Kursk is taken by Golden Horde, while i am marching to Briansk, i also left 3k infantry to complete the siege

of Smolensk.

1400 march 26, rebels crushed, Briansk retaken.

1400 may 6, first victory against horde, with 3k soldiers defeated and Kursk liberated. While my army was regaining morale,

horde arrived and gave me first punishment

ixaNI.jpg

At least some good news arrived from Poland

fRQgJ.jpg

A bit later Kursk revolts, but nobody cares as that province is under horde occupation.
1400 august 31, Smolensk finally surrenders and rejoin Lithuania. By hearing that news, King commisions Tapestry (-1 revolt +1

cultural tradition)

1400 december 10, disaster struck. By this time i lost Kursk, Podolia and Poltava to Golden Horde, polish army was defeated

and retreated to Poland. An army of Golden Horde was spotted moving to Chernigov, Lithuania's army was resting at the same

province, after some really bad rolls...

7LERL.jpg

Now i was really worried, i lost more than half army and my manpower was gone. The problem with 4.1 patch is that i can't

negotiate with Horde, as i could in 4.0c, so now Poland made a decision that angered lithuanian nobles, but was not the worst

case. I forgot to take screen, so it is from the log.

4Sh4v.jpg

Note: i always wondered what kind of war was between GDL and Horde. The only thing i managed to find, was a crusade against

Golden Horde in 1399, which was proposed by Grand Duke Vytautas and answered by many christian countries including Teutonic

Order. Different sources give different numbers on army, it could have been 35000-70000. It all ended terrible, with 75% of

army killed. Lithuania had to pay huge tribute and promise not make any invasions in the near future.

My primary mission is to westernize, that means centralization and innovate is a must, then i WILL get free trade. Now 1/3 of my income is from trade. still my yearly income 75.

With peace signed, Lithuania had big problems with rebels. Briansk and Smolensk were 2 rebel factories, with Briansk having no fort at all. Army was divided in 2 parts, one was securing Briansk, another southern part of country.
Missionary was sent to Polotsk to persuade local population to convert to true faith (catholic). He was a persuasive man, province embraced true religion just in a few days (first time in my many games)

ceE1f.jpg

Teutonic Order decided that it was time to convince Riga to "join", but Pommerania and Bohemia had different opinion and joined war.

i6e1I.jpg

It was time of opportunity for Lithuania. Now that teutons were busy, a sneaky plan was devised to spark rebellion in Samagotia and return the province home. Two times rebels were supported, 1 time teutons just canceled siege of Riga and crushed them. And when Bohemia was about to enter Order's lands and direct their attention from rebels, Poland decided that the time is now...

7TrpQ.jpg

This action stopped Bohemia's advance and helped teutons crush another rebellion. This was complete failure of Lithuania's foreign policy as those rebelions cost a fortune. It was decided to help crush Mazovia, but take no futher actions against
other belligerents. It turned out that Austria had alliance with Poland and Bohemia's fate was grim. Mazovia was quickly conquered and became Poland's puppet, although all work was done by Lithuania's Armed Forces.

snRHt.jpg

A bit later Riga was annexed by teutons, then peace signed with Bohemia and Pommerania.

1403 november 26, General Vytautas died. Mourning was declared all over the country.

Eq7NQ.jpg

Note: In our history. Vytautas the great, was grand duke of Lithuania and de facto ruler of country, although officially he declared his allegiance to Jogaila, his cousin and King of Poland. He died in 1430.

1403 december 3, Jogaila(Jogiello), soon followed his cousin, Regency Council took over the country, while hi son is still young.

i5GjJ.jpg

Still the war continued, Poland and Austria were carving Bohemia, but Lithuania stayed neutral in this conflict because nothing were to be gained from it. But while Bohemia's lands were pillaged by invaders, Bohemia sent and army to Lithuania and
took Podlasia. Answer to such insult was quick and decisive.

qoe81.jpg

While other countries were at each other throats, Lithuania cared only for her country.
Stability was slowly going up, but country was plagued with evil events.

adZMa.jpg

There were more of them, but why look at bad news. Still unrest started to grow in Lithuania, as Regent council seem to ignore Lithuania. Had two of these events in 1 year :)

V355M.jpg

One more missionary was sent to Minsk, to help with religious questions, but his progress was very slow. On the good news, Teutonic Order decided to invade Pskov, as it is guaranteed by Muscovy which has no direct route to protect it's friend. New
sneaky plan was designed and military transit rights were granted to Muscovy, so they could fight evil aggressors

AqHJU.jpg

Poland's war with Bohemia ended, Poland got Breslau and Oberlausitz. Lithuania was not impresed. Muscovy failed to achieve any significant result, although terrible battles took place. War ended with Pskov becoming order's vassal.

To battle terrible money shortage, plans were laid to become an important trade player. It quickly gave good results. Now 1/3 of income is from trade.

Q6i7X.jpg

Question: Currently i am lesser partner in Union with Poland, ruled by regency council, but there is a heir (6 years) what will happen once he takes over the country? I've never had such situation.

Herrhals, my first and true reader, i don't know if it is possible to revoke PU, it is HTTT, so it might be different from DW. Update will be tomorrow, because i had all day doing personal business and now it is 22:36 in Lithuania, so all EU3 gaming is for tomorrow, i hope you understand :) If you have any advice on my AAR, it would be very welcome, in any case it is my first try, so i am eager to improve it.

you can kill the PU by killing relations. Get relations below 0 and by the time the next king dies, you'll be on your own, including a new enemy in Poland.
Since Lithuania is so incredibly poor, you might want to put your silders towards free trade so you can start trading, and rake in the money!! When you start westernizing, the incredible income from trading will make the process of regaining stability A LOT less painful. Even if you have to spend 8-9 slider moves to get there, it is totally worth it!

For the future, you really have two options:
1. Head west and conquer the rich western European including Poland. Same-time, you can also gain some sea coastal provinces and get yourself into the colonization game. Would be fun to see a big purple Lithuanian blob in North America xD
2. Head northeast, while avoiding poor Russian provinces, take the northern fur provinces and expand to the pacific across wealthy Siberia.

Or you can do both. Avoid going south, it is nothing but poor provinces just like your own southern provinces. Actually, once you gain a bunch of cores on richer provinces, you might want to consider releasing, as a vassal, those southern provinces which are so poor.

Anyways, I will read what you do, and best of luck. Try not to reload too much. It is more interesting seeing failure and success together, rather than just success.

Year 1410 starts peacefully, although many other nation declare war on each other, but Lithuania plans to stay out of any unnecessary conflict (and i can't anyway due to regency council). Following the trading policy, it was decided to lift some trading restrictions and embrace more free trade (1 move towards free trade). Also it reduces merchant cost by 20%, that means new merchants in Venezia now cost 10 instead of 13 ducats.

CrX8j.jpg

Note: From now on i started noticing that a lot nations going bankrupt. At least 2-3 nations every year, but i don't remember seeing it in unpatched version.

3 september 1412, lvl 4 land tech discovered, but no real benefit recieved.

veWLz.jpg

There were rumors of treason and it was discovered, several nobles were executed, but it had impact on our stability.

PV2eC.jpg

Once trade plan was ongoing, another plan for religious unity was devised. The goal was to convert all provinces to catholic faith (different religion gives me -30% to tax income). Polotsk was first to convert, now Minsk followed. Another priest was sent to Mogilyov. Current situation of religions in Lithuania.

fe60h.jpg

In July 1413, Mogilyov was converted to catholic religion, but problems would not leave country alone, 25 september, country was shaken by poor government policies

mSwhs.jpg

After 2 peaceful years, Lithuania decided to break union with Poland and once again take care of their future, without any foreign interference. A new King is elected and
he takes full control of country.

hdGAz.jpg

Note: Historically, Lithuania was duchy and only a brief moment it was kingdom. Grand duke Mindaugas united Lithuania and in 1251 was crowned King of Lithuania. However
he had a lot of enemies, who killed him in 1261 and Lithuania again became duchy. Another attempt was by Vytautas the Great, who declared his intentions in 1429, however his crown was stopped in Poland's border (some sources say that it was in Teutonic Order border), he died in 1430, while another crown was sent via sea.
Anyway current king's surname is polish, so i am going to rename it to lithuanian standards, but it will be in next update.

Now, as country is independent, a plan was made to attack Golden Horde, who is suffering from succession crisis, so that Poltava might be retaken and also Cherson
taken, so that access to the sea would be obtained. New General was appointed, who will lead glorious army of Lithuania.

w5TFd.jpg

12 June 1416, war is declared against Golden Horde (holy war), who has some allies in asia, but they can't reach horde itself, so nobody cares about them. While horde
is distracted fighting rebels, Poltava is taken, but soon an enemy army is spotted traveling to Kursk, where it is decisively defeated.

PPLYV.jpg

1 june brings very good news as new technology is discovered, also Hungary decided to help us in our fight against infidels

wyMfe.jpg

Another army was spotted traveling towards Kursk, however it was worrying as it was huge, had 3k cavalry and 25k infantry, still it was defeated and chased till 1420
until was completely destroyed. With horde in disarray, quick plan was made to take Poltava and Cherson, then make peace treaty, because war exhaustion climbed to 7
and constant revolts were rising. Our previous deal with Muscovy of military access, was a great success, because any rebels that would spawn in Briansk or Smolensk,
would be defeated by Muscovy's armies, so our forces would be free to take on Golden Horde. Later alliance was signed, so Muscovy's threat was eliminated. Finally
peace was signed with Golden Horde, gaining Poltava and Cherson

DeUf9.jpg

17 april 1420 heir has born, whole kingdom was celebrating.

dvTic.jpg

23 february 1421, Mogilyov was converted to true faith, the next day curia was granted to Lithuania, making it papal controller, king was very pleased.

m4Ob7.jpg

What horrors await Lithuania in 1422, we will find out soon. :)

Note. i am very grateful to Herrhals for his tips.

Awesome update. Free trade policies will not be effective in placing merchants until you are 2 or 3+ into free-trade.
What did you pick as your first national idea?

Will you be going west or east?

Well, sometimes f11 doesn't work, so some pictures got not taken. I took National Bank, because i am forced to mint 0.2 per year, so my inflation is 3 now. I think i will go east, with some occasional conquests in the west. I'll need to defeat Muscovy (ally) and Golden Horde, then some weak nations in siberia and start massive colonization which will bring untold riches :) In any case i need to expand east, so that Ottomans couldn't back stab me latter.

In patched version game is much harder. In unpatched one, by this time, i would be much bigger, maybe even Empire now :) , but now Lithuania can't make separate peace with Horde. As for the name, some words sound silly in different languages, there are some words in latin, who sound very funny in lithuanian :D

Pik, is penis in Danish :p
Is, is ice cream.
tun (toon) is tunafish

Penis! Tunafish icecream!

Anyways, Lithuanian is an unfortunate culture group with no significant nearby culture group!
Actually, you should go both ways! F the emperor, take their lands anyways! A true Lithuanian does not let a silly emperor stand in his way of glory!

My initial plan is to deal with horde, so it won't bother me in the future, then focus on Teutonic Order and reclaim historic lands, regrettably i lost core on Samagotia, but i need to access baltic sea, so that none western nation could plant roots there. As for HRE, currently it poses no threat to me and my neighbors are not members, although i've had one game where HRE was formed and then simply crushed me, so i'll keep an eye on them. :)

I have NEVER seen HRE form. But, from what I have seen, they fail quite epicly. The AI does not understand to storm a fort.

Year 1422 starts with some reforms in government policies, 1 more step towards centralization of the country, however some noble decided he can be a better king, nobody came to his funeral.

Once order was restored, Lithuania declared war on Teutonic Order and it's vassal Pskov. Muscovy as a faithful ally joined the war. War lasted for 2 years, when finally Pskov, Wenden, Samogitia and Livland were taken, Orders armies crushed. Resulting peace treaty was more than expected initially. Although Pskov was a vassal of teutons, i still was able to demand them as order's province, so basicaly i annexed it :)

Muscovy who got nothing from this war decided to wage more war and attacked Ryazan who was not alone, Lithuania decided to help our ally, so that something might be gained.

After 3 years of fighting and no real gain visible (my infamy is 11 and i don't want it bigger), Lithuania demanded some reparations and left war.

UDdDg.jpg

An army was split in 2 parts, with second part reinforced with 5 cavalry and 1 infantry regiments, 1st army was left in the north, while second was sent south to suppress any revolt that might happen.
With economy growing, 3 biggest trade centers were filed with lithuanian merchants, currently i have 5 merchants in 3 biggest trade centers, but i can't send to any other because i constantly lose merchants and doesn't have a lot to replace loses, so focus was shifted on more missionaries, so that country would be united under one faith.

Now that Estland is cut off from the rest of Order's lands (Orel is now owned by Denmark), spies were sent to start rebellion and with luck, province would defect to Lithuania (patriot type rebel spawned).

The year 1429 ended with Lithuania advancing to lvl 5 land tech and all efforts were directed to research lvl 6 so that swarm cavalry would be unlocked.

Note. My game started crashing every 5 minutes, so i am going to investigate the issue.
