As I understand the sentiments of the early EU era, there used to be considerable contention of just where Batavia was and lots of people pegged it as centered around Brabant. It was long after Holland's general supremacy in the area that it could be coopted for the name of a formal government. In essence proving the point about the victors writing history...

As a degenerate North American Mongrel (tm), I think anyone in the Benelux area can lay claim to it. And it's certainly more impressive than Nieuw Vlaanderen. :D

But, your choice. If you're not Emperor of the Batavian Empire, I'll continue to see your name in my mind's eye as Brugge-dude in Black. :D

Brabant is a sorely lacking province in the game and got partitioned in a Belgian and Dutch part later on. But Flanders is another province anyway.

Flanders was in the Roman Belgica part and not the Germania, Batavia one really, where Brabant was.

Batavia gets used for the Rhine area in the Netherlands so doesn't really apply.

Flanders also wasn't originally part of the HRE unlike the rest of the Netherlands and so on.

As Caesar wrote Belgica are the bravest of all Gallia.

Nieuw Vlaanderen is the name though as it is New and it's Flemish :D I use the province names anyway, so it's Recife and all.

Besides I don't need no names from those dykebuilders, I'll get my own ;)

I am President of the Council of Flanders then :D

It's quite a tradition wherever I end up to make up what my initials stand for and u just kept that tradition going nicely :D

I meant it! I follow up on promises! Then again if they break it ... :D

Though I don't plan to be very active there. There'll be 2 competitors there, while other areas are very open to us, like the China trade. which would be quite historically as there was a thriving China trade in the Austrian period in the Southern Netherlands.

I also have limited settlers compared to the others (I fixed this by now but it isn't active in this save) so I can colonise only selectively. So I will do population colonisation (plenty of people in Flanders!!) in Brazil and build a trade zone near China.

Anyway, that's the plan :D

PAYBACK TIME.

A French declaration of war of issued and before we could say anything Picardie and Artois were under siege. A blitzkrieg if ever there was one. And one with a devastating man advantage. Damage control was the mission.

The French in Europe looked near unstoppable but in the few colonies that they had they looked very weak. We attacked their African tradeposts from our basis in Recife and also issued an army in Manhattan to take out French Canada. Both were easily wiped out and replaced with Flemish traders.

But in Europe we were being overrun. Total defeat wasn’t far from the exact description. Luckily Flanders held but they already had Picardie, Artois and Calais under control with Hainaut soon to follow.

We sued for peace. It looked to onsiders as if France held all the cards but we had some jokers up our sleeve.

Treaty of Calais II :

1) France gets full control over Picardie, Calais and Artois and Flandres rejects any claim it has on them effectively giving up their CB.
2) France gave up its claims on the rest of Flanders, giving up their CB and hereby effectively recognising the independance of their now former renegade province, sommink very important to us cuz if France and England support our independence, that meant as much as being independent for all.
3) Flanders from now on would be part of the HRE instead of France.
4) France also recognised Flemish Brazil while Flandres opened up Africa again for French trade.
5) Both promised never to declare war on each other again in an effort to prevent backstabbing, sommink very useful for France as they were in near constant wars, so a non agression pact.

After this war, which we lost and won at the same time, we rebuilt our stability, converted our colonies and started expanding our colonies, Brazil looking very much like New Flandres now and Recife eventually got its own COT which we prompty monopolised.

France ventured into African slave trade once again and fought many wars in Europe. They fought both Spain and the Habsburgs. England also was fghting Spain. When the little German states also joined in the war neared its end. England got the Canaries, France got Navarra, Roussillon, Champagne and Gerona and Lorraine got the Franche Comté. Cologne got Luxembourg. Soon after that war France diplo annexed Lorraine and I fel very happy I secured our border earlier!

We looked very safe in Europe now. Decimated, yes, but safe. France to the south in a non agression pact, England, our dear Friends accros the Channe and fellow reformed religion countries like Hessen, Holland and Kurphalz nearby. In the meantime our colonial empire was growing and the Flemish and Recife COT were booming.

For now we had been unallied for a bit, esp seeing Prussia didn’t want us back. And unfortunately tbey were the alliance leader and not England. But then in the same month I got 2 alliance offers. One from France and one from England (whose alliance had expired) ... Which to choose ? Decisions, decisions ...

war and peace

You just had a war, and now they are asking you for an alliance. How strange. I'm inclined to say go with your fellow calvinists, but who else is in the French alliance?

There was a bit of time between the war and offers though and I always made xure I had somewhat good relations with them. France seems to have a policy of trying to keep its neighbours close and then vassalising/diplo annexing them though they don't know that is impossible with a human player :D

Yet again we stayed loyal and went with England. I figured Scotland will convert soonish so they will drop out of the French Alliance and so woudl end the Flanders-France wars when Scotland and England battle it out.

We’re nearing 1550 and we recieve our first explorer. Time to get to China ...
