So I started up a Brandenburg game and things have been going smoothly up until now (~1480) - I've diploannexed Pomerania and Mecklenburg, and have Magdeburg as a vassal. My most important allies are Poland and Brunswick (the former for troops and the latter for expansion into Germany). I've taken Humanist Ideas and plan on Offensive and Quality next. That's the good news.
The not so good news is that Bohemia recently broke our alliance. Also, Poland more or less ate all of the Teutonic Order (I got Neumark) and vassalized the rest while forming a PU with Lithuania.
The really bad news is that the Burgundian Succession Crisis triggered and it was eaten by Austria, who also happens to have a PU with Hungary. So to sum it up, I've got what could be a monstrous Poland to my East, thankfully an ally, and a terrifying Austria to the south, who just recently left a coalition against me. My current options look to be continued expansion in North Germany with a plan to form Germany eventually, while hoping that Muscovy starts eating Poland and *something* bad happens to Austria.
If anyone's got other ideas or suggestions I'd love to hear them. Help a confused warmonger out?
