Hearts of Iron II is a very interesting game that greatly surprised me when I bought it. The box was kind of beat-up, and the game seemed to have been stuck in the shelf for quite a while. Yet, since I'm a big fan of playing what no one else seems to play (at least in my town), I was glad to find that this game was filled with interesting gameplay and a wide range of nations to pick.

Nonetheles, there are still some things that would have made my game experience much better, so here they go...

Expanding the Timeline

1936 to 1953 is a good timeline for the times of the events happening during the World War II era. Yet, it would be even better if the timeline could be further expanded into the year 1970.

Now, I know that you (the producers of the game) have constantly stated that the game is simply supposed to deal with the time around World War II, and not the "Cold War."

Yet, the 1950s and the 1960s were very interesting years that covered a whole range of events that had important events and other such things. Furthermore, several of those events came directly as an effect of the events in World War II.

Also, another interesting thing would be to have a "World War III" not 2 months after the end of World War II (which is too unreal, even for the game, since the nations are at a point where they have to rebuild and not get involved in a conflict again), but rather have it start in the late 1950s to the mid 1960's--hence let the game continue on into the end of December 1969.

More Provinces for the Rest of the World:

Aside from the main World War II areas, the rest of the world really seems abandoned in the number of provinces it has. As much as I loved the Europe and Asia maps, only the United States had more provinces in America (and basically the rest of the world).

I mean, the other provinces just tend to be large chunks of land.

Per se, in South America there was room for more development to be made in terms of adding more provinces, another scenario, and having the posibility for more nations to be liberated.

More specifically

Claims

1. Peru on Chile

Peru should have territorial claims on Chile, since the "War of the Pacific" took toll on both Bolivian and Peruvian land. Hence, Chile should be given more provinces such as Arica (northern section of "Antofagasta" in the game) which Peru should claim, and another province above Santiago (so as to make grabing the capital from the north a little more dificult).

2. Chile on Argentina & Argentina on Chile

Chile and Argentina have generally had sour relations due to various border problems. Among these, the claim for "Tierra del Fuego" are one of the most well-known. Furthermore, by the time the game is set, Chile had gained the western section of Tierra del Fuego. Nevertheless, both Chile and Argentina still have some issues regarding the borders of tierra del fuego. So, my proposal is that "Tierra del Fuego" (in the game) is divided in two provinces, and one of them is given to Chile as Magallanes. Next, both Argetina and Chile should have claims on the whole Tierra del Fuego.

Territories

1. Peru: Territories

Peru should also have more provinces since it is, after all, the 3rd largest nation in South America. Some nice implements would have been adding provinces such as:

-Tacna (Southern section of Arequipa).
-Piura (Northern section of Trujillo).
-Junin (Eastern section of Lima).
-Puno (Southern section of Cusco).
-Madre de Dios (Southeastern section of Pucallpa).

2. Paraguay: Territories

The idea with Paraguay with 2 provinces wasn't much to my liking, hence I propose a couple of more provinces for the country:

-Misiones (Southern section of Ciudad del Este).
-Fuerte Olimpo (Western section of Asuncion).

Fuerte Olimpo should be claimed by Bolivia. Hence, Asuncion should not be claimed by Bolivia.

3. Chile: Territories

As mentioned before, Chile should gain some more territories, such as:

-Arica (Northern section of Antofagasta).
-Magallanes (Western section of Tierra del Fuego).

Magallenes should be claimed by Argentina.

Liberate Nation

1. Brazil: "Liberate Nation: Riograndense Republic"

Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riograndense_Republic

Brazil has historically had various problems in controlling its large territory, and various indepent states have been formed and have had to be re-taken by Brazil throughout its history.

The Riograndense Republic has been one of the most controversial, as it has constantly tried to become an independent nation. In the game, Brazil could have the option of liberating this nation and let it control the province of "Porto Alegre" as its capital.

2. Peru: "Liberate Nation: South Peru"

Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_South_Peru

Peru has not always been a single nation, which is a fact that many people tend to ignore (for reasons unknown to myself).

Yet, since this game is highly Historically Accurate (with its cool chances to also be ahistoric), it would be extremely interesting (and nice) if Peru could have the option to liberate the nation of "South Peru."

In a quick summary, this nation was created when Peru and Bolivia formed the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy, which was rather short-lived but ended up getting formal declarations of acknowledgement as a nation from countries such as the United States, France, and Great Britain.

South Peru had its capital at Tacna (a good province for the game to have), and had the areas of Southern Peru (excluding Lima, which was the capital of North Peru). South Peru even had its own flag, which can be viewed after entering the Wikipedia link.

In the end, the nation was annexed by North Peru once the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy broke apart.

Technically speaking, what was "North Peru" is what modernly (and during the timeline of HoI) is called "Peru;" this being since the capital and the flag are those of North Peru.

South America: Scenario

The Peru-Ecuador War of the 1940s is a realistic scenario that should have been included in the game. The war was an interesting event since the situation got so wild in the area that Germany even sent some messages asking Peru to become an ally of them.

According to a source I can't remember, Venezuela intercepted these messages, and quickly gave them to the United States.

Peru was winning the War, and was at the point of annexing Ecuador, but that's when Brazil and the United States kicked in to come up with a peace treaty with these two nations before a huge problem actually began.

Peru later became the first South American nation to declare war on Germany, and the Allies sent Peruvian troops to guard some islands in the Pacific in case the Japanese sent in a surprise attack (which never happened).

That's it for now

If anybody else would like to contribute with more ideas on how to improve the South American continent in the game, any idea is welcome. :D

I'll add more ideas on some other nations when I have some more time. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
