When I go to the diplomacy screen, I see no way of improving relations. How do I do this?

there is another button you need to select, this will give oyu access to offer gifts and instructions etc. these will improve relations

You can improve relations in paying a more or less expensive gift. Note that there is two information windows for diplomacy (View Alliances and View Relations). You choose from one to the other with the upper left buttons
