This post was inspired by a recent post a mission or project for the Byzantines to renovate the Hagia Sophia. I propose adding a branch of missions to Byzantine mission tree. Most of these might require the Purple Phoenix DLC.

"Union with Rome?"

"In 1438 our Basileus Ioannes IX negoitated support from the Pope in Rome. In exchange for military support from the West against the Turks, our Basileus agreed to convert to Catholicism, along side with his brother and heir Konstantinos. However, the most profitable work was made on the subject of the schism. The council produced a solid attempt to reunite the Church in Constantinople with that of Rome. However, our people are reluctant to go along with such overtures. If we are to continue reclaiming what was once ours; we will need to decide whether we solidify our efforts from Ferrara, or will we abandon them?"

With the resettlement of Pontus, an issue has come to our attention. These lands are the ancient homelands of the Kommenoi. The Kommenoi had been Emperor in the past, until they were usurped. After the disaster of 1204, they took up the lands around Trebizond. As our power contracted, they began to look else where and ignored Constantinople's authority. With our miraculous recovery, the Kommenoi have become...worried. Now a petition has come to Constantinople asking that the Kommenoi be reinstated in Trebizond as Strategos of that region. However, some of our political advisors and eunuchs argue that the Kommenoi are traitors to the throne and should be arrested and killed. Good job! This can make game as BYZ a little more than "Conquest, conquest, conquest"

Thanks. Strangely this is most work and effort I've put into a project that has literally little or no benefit for me.

10.000 ducats for the hagia sophia mission? For +1 prestige and some church legitimacy? any change it could be lowered to 1000 /1500/2500 ducats?

Overall, I like the missions you've proposed for Byzantium. In general, I feel that missions oriented around other things than conquest are always a good addition to any mission-tree. Here's some feedback I have about your mission, event and decision suggestions:
  • The ducat cost for "Renovate and Modernize the Hagia Sophia" seems way too expensive for the bonuses it provides. To demonstrate, let's show what the bonuses you propose would actually translate to. By 1648, when tech 19 becomes available for most tags, Hagia Sophia's bonuses would amount to 17 Patriarch authority, 20 saved Patriarch authority, and 2,076 prestige for the rest of the game. The Patriarch bonuses seem negliable to me, and considering how many sources of prestige there are in the game, I don't find the extra prestige particularly appealing.
  • Culture conversion missions in the Balkans and South Italy don't really seem fitting to me. Not only did the historical attempts at the Hellenisation of the Balkans by Byzantium fail repeatedly, but many areas that are the focus of culture-conversion missions never even had a majority Greek population to begin with, so portraying these regions as being "resettled" doesn't seem appropriate. Not to mention that at the time, central governments didn't really have the means to enforce cultural assimilation of various ethnic groups, so Byzantium having missions and rewards focusing on cultural assimilation of a region that historically resisted doing so just doesn't seem appropriate to me.
  • "Honor Archimedes" doesn't really feel too period-appropriate. Going back to Ancient Greece for inspiration of Byzantine missions just doesn't fit, in my opinion.
  • "Raze Venice" should probably be handled better by expanding on the Byzantine mission that occurs after Annihilate Venice. After all, by the time when you've conquered Venice, there's little reason to continue making the region less valuable, given that Venice is an end-node and one of the most lucrative trade nodes in-game.
  • "Turkish Question" has the same issues as to the Balkans and Magna Graecia: Turkish culture was by 1444 entrenched in Anatolia, with Greeks being but a minority in the region. However, unlike in the Balkans and South Italy, not only would the Byzantine Empire have obvious interest in hellenizing Anatolia due to it being their old powerbase, but due to Greeks still being the majority population in several coastal parts of Anatolia. As such, it'd probably be realistic to have a culture-conversion mission in Anatolia, albeit if it was scaled down to focusing on the Greek-speking minorities in Anatolian Coast. Specifically, there could be a reward event with following options on how to deal with the Anatolian Greeks:
    • Turkish population transfers: represents the forced movement of Turkish population inland by having all provinces with historical Greek majority gaining Greek culture while having a good chunk of their development moved to other owned Turkish culture provinces.
    • Anatolian Greek population transfers: represents the consolidation of Anatolian Greek populations, with only some of the provinces with Greek minorities, while gaining development from provinces that didn't flip to Greek culture.
    • European Greek population transfers: represents accomplishing Greek province majority by moving people from European side of Byzantium to Anatolia by having all provinces with historical Greek majority gaining Greek culture and gaining development, which is lost from Greek provinces outside of Anatolia.
    • Some sort of fourth option which instead of immediately flipping provinces to different cultures, makes Greek the original culture of the Anatolian areas with Greek minorities, thus giving those areas -50% culture conversion cost bonus. There could be alternative options to choose as well, such as moving Turkish to Byzantine culture group (under, say, Turcopole or Tourkoi culture), or moving the Anatolian Greek population to the mainland Greece, or populating Anatolia with a mix of cultures from across the empire.
  • The event "Fate of the Komnemoi" seems rather unrealistic to me. While I can see why you'd include this (an easy way to integrate Trebizond back to Byzantine Empire, as well as a way to get the Komnemos back on the Byzantine throne), it is rather unrealistic that the pretenders for the title of Byzantine Empire would just surrender their independence, or for the Komnemoi to just take the Byzantine throne that trivially. Instead, there should be an event for Trebizond seeking foreign support against the evergrowing threat of Byzantine Empire (possibly with Trebizond approaching their old ally Georgia); an event for dealing with the Komnemoi after conquering Trebizond; and a possible disaster with a civil war between Komnemos and Pagailogos supporters if the Komnemoi are let live.
And finally, some proposals:
  • Historically, one of the main issues Byzantium faced was its overreliance on mercenaries. As such, perhaps Byzantium could have a mission focusing on reforming its military to a more professional standing army?
  • Byzantium could have some diplomatic missions dealing with the Orthodox nations, like Russia, Romanian principalities and Georgia, or Catholic nations in Orthodox lands, like Genoa, Venice, Crusader states and Albania. Say, they might be able to convince Albania to convert to Orthodoxy in exchange of promoting them to a kingdom, or they could diplomatically convince some of the tags to return territory to Byzantium that they lost during the Fourth Crusade, possibly in exchange to some other concessions (like Genoa returning the Greek islands and Crimea to Byzantium in exchange for the loss of Bosporus Sound Toll modifier and Genoa getting a permanent trade power boost in Byzantium's territories).

@Aquamancer Thanks for the feedback, I'll get working on an edit to them over the weekend when I find time between school work.

Some things I wanted to note, the Fate of Kommenoi event was designed to fire after you have annexed Trebizond, however I potentially see a scenario where Trebizond is alive, so I'll try to fix it.

Next, the culture conversion bonuses for Southern Italy were based around the Griko people, while I don't have figures on populations for them around 1444, its safe to presume that the resurgance of Byzantium might have allowed them to be more open about their language, but then would open a can of worms about adding another new culture. I

liked the idea of adding some diplomatic missions, so they will be put on the list. Expecially , inter-Orthodox relations, mainly with Russia.

Wow. That's a lot of work.

One thing I noticed: As a reward for devpushes you often offer devcost reduction. If I dev'd up Antioch to 40, I'd probably not insist on throwing some more monarch power at it in the next couple of years, especially seeing how I have lots of other provinces to develop for the other missions.

Whilst it is true that for most parts of central Anatolia the Greeks where few or non existant on the coast they where still strong in 1444. I mean they got thrown out only a few years earlier. Smyrna still had a big population in the 1910s and as such the starting culture really should be Greek on the coast facing Konstantinopel. Also Griko where the majority in at least two neapel provinces in the heal of Italy at least. And you can also argue that over 50 Percent of Anatolia should not have turkish culture but armenian, kurdish or aramaen. For a matter of fact the turkish culture was also heavily mixed at that time with many Greek converts to islam and many words and traditions made it over from the greek culture. So having an event where at least the coast immidiatley becomes Greek should be fine as gimmick. But I can understand that as we have no population or minority setting this is hard to balance.

Recently a Metropolitan has made some impassioned speeches against both the union, which he decried as a reject of the true faith.
