Looking good!

That RockPaperShotgun reviewer is a bit naff though. You'd of thought they would have been able to send someone who understood the interface. It doesn't look that different from HOI3.

Really? The air interface is completely new. Several have commented on it not being great. We don't know how naval transport works (like HOI3 or not? no-one explained it in enough detail to make that judgement) several have commented on it.

And of course, the several includes the devs themselves. Johan specifically mentioned these interfaces as needing alot more improvement before they are finished.

Those Russian general portraits are amazing. Does the man in the middle intimidate his enemies with his giant moustache? Also, NL's zoom in-zoom out game is exceptional, as always.

I feel really terrible commenting on the battle planner on this video, because NL isn't really the type of person I'd expect to pay immense amounts of attention to it (and, of course, he's the USSR), but it still seems really iffy, especially with those incredibly simple plans in Romania and Turkey.

The peace system, again, looks incredibly interesting - I wonder how the AI will deal with it, what they'll request, etc.

I hope that they have, like, 'regional' generic national focus groups, so that the missions in the Balkans, though generic, will still make sense, and so on in South America, etc.

And, again, it... irked me a little bit that the most important thing to him was comparing HoI4 to EU4 instead of HoI3, but I understand that's his background.

Well, I think he made the plans so simple since they don't require complex plans and he simply wanted to automate the conquest of those weak nations instead of having to do tedious manual control to take them over.

I mean, sure, but one could also potentially just advance great-war style against France as Germany in HoI3, but it's still a terrible idea and you're going to lose a lot more than if you carefully planned.

And again, I don't necessarily think that this 'confirms' the weakness of the battle plan system, since.. it's NL, and he's the USSR. I felt more worried about Quill in Yugoslavia than I do about this video.

Okay, here is what I have been able to club together:

Works as advertised:
-Production System (including division creation and deployment)
-Research
-National Goals

Works, but clunky interface means it does not feel like it:
-Ground Combat/Battle Planner
-Air Combat

Works, but in serious need of tweaking:
-World Tension

Seems Incomplete
-Diplomacy, both peace and wartime.

Not mentioned:
-Naval Combat
-Espionage
-Logistics

Now if you ask me... for a game that has just entered alpha, this isn't bad at all! Sounds to me like Paradox is doing good work.

The one thing I will note is that it appeared his army was getting a 50% bonus from conducting a plan. That seems a bit steep and will make the battleplan a requirement to use to not forgo that bonus.

The one thing I will note is that it appeared his army was getting a 50% bonus from conducting a plan. That seems a bit steep and will make the battleplan a requirement to use to not forgo that bonus.

Not having that bonus make manual control a requirement as manual control by a human is inherently better than AI control, even if directed AI control.

I've seem this argument quite a bit, but what people seem to forget is that the two ways to control armies are not equal in strength. Manual control is much better. If everything in game is equal, then manual control is the only way to play optimal. Give bonus to AI control, meanwhile, and things become more balanced. Now you will have to constantly weight your options. You will always want a Battle Plan for this sweet bonus, but sometimes just that will not be enough. You will need to keep watch to manually intervene with if things are not going well. You will need to think if intervening now is worth the loss of the bonus but it will often be since, again, manual control is inherently more efficient.
