I am playing the Ottomans, it's around the 1550's and I'm trying to pull off a westernisation
The jump to Western Technology was quite easy, but I'm now involved in my third attempt at westernising the army, and failing epically.
I can handle the 666 billion rebellions, my empire is quite large but so is the army. It's the extra events that do it for me. I have already picked resist western influences twice to abort an attempt as I was getting overrun by rebels.
ATM my empire is in worse shape than Russia was in 1919, but I'm holding, somewhat. The fucking events have dropped my legitimacy to 13, though. Is it normal for the westernisation rebellions to be so insane or do I misunderstand something? I have to spend several decades in civil war due to the slider changes the westernise event causes and the demands that military westernisation puts on your sliders, right?

I have to say I'm on about 2/3 cores, not overextended and I still have a chunk of Timmy and GH land under occupation, which I also try to keep under control. So far, it works, somewhat.

I understand the resist decision is there to lower revoltrisk, but if I understand correctly that aborts the westernisation process for a decade and I have to fire the descision again to start over, right?

Edit: through delaying events that wanted to kill my stability 3 months before reaching the level needed, I savescummed my way through it. there must be a more legit way to do it, though. right???

Thats right, you can't modernize military under "resist western influences" modifier. And you need higher centralization then to westernize tech ( -5 instead of -2).
Most governments don't allow that centralization anyway and the first are absolute monarchy or republican dictatorship,
close are administrative republic or administrative monarchy (-3) so I suggest don't even try before the government is appropriate or
you will have a killing revolt risk.
Then you need full stability.
I suggest to have a slider move ready before taking the decision and three 5 star advisers of any kind.
When resist western influences wanes take the decision to modernize then immediately decentralize to maybe get stability boost (common result).
If have loads of money, buy a stability level.
The advisers provide an event with MTTH of 20 years with full innovative for each and 18 years for 6 stars adviser so on average 6 years to gain 2 free stability.
If you can have such event firing before you modernized then pause, modernize and take the event.
You will have +6% revolt risk from a special modifier and +6% from -3 stability. so be ready for revolt hunting for two years at least.
I did that with truces with main enemies(no backstabs) and an event ,also decentralized a step and bought a level so I recovered stability to +1 immediately.
The money reserve is needed anyway as the army should be on full maintenance in "peacetime".
The advisers preferred are grand marshal to get legitimacy quickly, high judge (-2.5% revolt for 5 star)
and an fortificator, commandant and such to help fight the rebels. (I had full legitimacy so I had high judge, fortificator and artist).

That sounds pretty much like my situation.
The only thing I don't have is a correct government type, that's what I did wrong, probably.
Well, by some miracle I got my stability up and managed to westernise the army. Bought stability back up again with a very very lucky gift to the state event.
I'm now fielding western troops (tercio and the like), but the header over the screen where you pick which type of unit you want still says Ottoman tech. Probably a bug?
and yes, as advisors I had anti-revoltrisk, legitimacy and stability. Under normaly circumstances I can easily afford full maintenance in peacetime, as long as my stab stys positive

Thank god it worked, cause my emperor has been on for 55 years and his heir is a 3 3 4 with weak claim............
I'll probably drop an empire screenshot in the future, as we have Spain, Great Britain, a big Smolensk and a Ukraine with almost its modern borders.....

It does abort it for a decade. Best way is to always use the resist option immediately to stop the bad events, then hope that when it runs out after those 10 years that you meet the criteria. Honestly, the only reason not to take resist is if you're a few months from meeting the criteria. I've always just sucked up the revolt risk from being too centralised anyway, it shouldn't be that big a deal.

I know, it's badly designed, but that's the best way to get through it unfortunately.

I recently played Ottomans, I did the Westernization decision, but I did not do the second Military Modernization one, my military was already by far the strongest one in the world so there was no need.
Ottoman units are quite good, so I don't think you need the military modernization.

Just resist western influences until you have the required centralisation and administration. It really isnt complex.

P.S Ottoman troops are better then Western troops at lt18

I think there's some confusion in this thread:

Resist Western Influences disables the ability to modernize your military until it wears off. It does not roll back any existing progress made westernizing. Simply resist western influences until you meet the criteria.

The annoying bits of westernization are the big stab hits when passing the decisions, the modifiers given to you by the decisions, and the fact that you have to focus your nation so specifically (sliders etc) to do it. If you are having trouble with anything else, it's likely due to misunderstanding the system.

Probably the first part yea. I thought at first that if I resisted, I'd have to fire the first westernisation descicion again

Wow, can you imagine if paradox was evil enough to do that!?

In my mind, it made sense. You attempt to westernise, you get tons of rebels. If you can not handle it, you abort the process by resisting:p
