Supposedly one of the ways this may happen is if an ambitious emperor with imperial administration organises the expensive papal coronation. I have done exactly this countless times and haven’t seen it happen. Am I missing something? Is it very rare?

I managed to self-crown as a demon child. I'm not sure if I was ambitious at the time, but I was definitely possessed...

Here's the full code:

Code:
   option = { # Napoleon option
       name = EVTOPTZHF20366
       trigger = {
           tier = EMPEROR
           age = 16 # Has to be strong enough to grab the crown from the Pope's clutches.
           event_target:coronation_priest = { has_landed_title = k_papal_state }
           has_character_flag = flag_extravagant_coronation #Only allowed to screw everything up if you have spent the most money in it already.
           OR = {
               trait = lunatic
               trait = possessed
               AND = {
                   trait = ambitious
                   primary_title = { has_law = imperial_administration }
               }
               society_member_of = the_satanists
           }
       }

So, you have to:
- be an emperor; and
- be at least 16; and
- have chosen the extravagant coronation option; and
- will be crowned by the head of your religion (I think this is the only way you can get the extravagant option); and
- the crowning bishop must own the k_papal_state title; and
- you must have one or more of: lunatic; possessed; ambitious + imperial administration; member of satanists.

The flavour text if you manage to do this is quite fun :)

Also, be advised: the Pope (and every subsequent Pope) will hate your guts. Hope you like being excommunicated!

Ha! This is a bug! I assume you're running with Conclave DLC?

imperial_administration is the name of the non-Conclave law. The Conclave equivalent is ze_administration_laws_2. So, if you're running Conclave, there is no way you can have the imperial_administration law. This means that you can never fulfil the ambitious + imperial possibility.

EDIT - If you want to do it and see the flavour text, I suggest you make yourself lunatic or possessed before organising the coronation, because that definitely works. (Scholarship focus -> Necronomicon has a fairly good chance of getting lunatic.)

Wow! Thanks for all the information!! If it's a bloodline it might be a good thing to have a brother at hand before doing it, to kill it off.

I'll report the bug in case they want to fix it.
